Eidos is aware of this bug and has posted in several places fairly prominently about it, including workarounds for XBox360, PS3, and PC.

These seem a bit simpler than the fix the OP suggested.

Anyone without a recent savegame might want to try one of these (http://www.tombraidergirl.com/tr8/savegames.php). (PC and PS3) I don't think using a cheat programme is the ultimate solution...
