View Full Version : Disappointment. PUZZLES?!

I'm only a little way through and already I am so annoyed at TRU, it’s not tomb raider!! it’s something crap like Uncharted, I’m on the PS3 version and already had so many glitches - Lara getting stuck, a big line through the screen when Lara first meets the tigers.
The boat level - shooting the men who don’t shoot back/don’t notice they’re being shot felt so much like Uncharted.
PUZZLES?! are there any because any of the 'puzzles' I’ve come across aren’t exactly challenging - puzzles are what tomb raider is all about - what happened to Lara spending ages in one room going from one place to another and back again trying to figure out how to get the key/which key to use/where the key goes etc or moving block to unlock something. Not a pressure pad you drop a couple of stones onto.
The graphics are nice but nothing special - this is a PS3! I’m going to compare any game now to metal gear solid 4 because that’s simply the best thing I’ve played and TRU still looks like a PS2 game in comparison. Or interactive environment - for example she can’t open cupboard/doors or on her little boat she walks into the stairs like it’s a wall!!?
Lara herself - she moves far too fast which happened in the last 2 games.
Environments are beautiful but what happened to no music like in the previous games - the idea of being alone. The music is beautiful too but the whole time?
The best part of the game is the trailer and its Lacrymosa soundtrack and the main TRU theme.
Ever since coming to PS2 tomb raider has been ruined. Lara shouldn’t have the option of help! the idea of these games is (used to be) that they are challenging - having hints is what the cheats were for and I turned off all the aiding buttons but it’s still too easy - why have those disgustingly horrible obvious ledges to grab?! Lara shouldn’t have zip and the butler to help her either - she works alone.
Crystal Dynamics have ruined my favourite game. Originally I thought Uncharted was the cheap rip off of Tomb Raider, now it's hard to tell which is worse.

Sad to say it but I agree. :(
It seems the modern TR is a Disney-esque interpretation. Well puzzles were very easy, secrets in vases scattered around the floor, hardly secret. Treasure Hunt mode is basiclly vase raiding. Was hardly the darker epic I thought it was going to be, thats all.
For me it was like TRL although much much better. It was beautiful & predictible, quick paced but fun & a grand short excitement fix. One thing I would say that was close to the classics for me was the music, which was stunning!
But it's like a film that perants put on to entertain the children for a bit.
Just my opinion. The game I played at least had quite a few bugs, was even forced to resart a few levels back due to a bug. Maybe I was just unlucky, all the same I'm happy that a lot of you guys seem to have got what you had hoped for.;)

You're the first person to mark that Underworld's graphics are basically average and not up to par.
I totally disagree with you!
Underworld looks far more superior to any Ps2 game in existence!
And if you read the IGN full review, they noted that the Ps3 version has alot more technical problems than the 360 version.
FYI: This is an Action/ Adventure game, not an RPG!
What does she need to open the cupboards for? Lara ready to begin her adventure not begin her vacation on the ocean side!)

i agree treasure hunt is crap there arn't even enimies in treasure hunt cus you've killed them already. this was meant to be like the newest experience and its just crap i mean like they blew up the manor so we don't hav an area to just run about now with no troubles.
hav u noticed you can't quit from the game there is no quit button there is a load and a save but no quit every time i want to quit i hav to go to the dashboard. and i mean whats with the whole out-fits i mean why can't we decide what she wears not having to pick between 2 out-fits for a level and like there is hardly any out-fits there are no cheats the only way u can watch cinematics is if u replay a level and i would say the only good thing about this game is the graphics sorry eidos and CD u made a game worse than legend and i actually liked legend alot. i don't think any1 from the actual companies looked at these threads :mad2: :mad2: :mad2: :mad2: :mad2:

Puzzles are in a different style to the ones that were in the Core Design games. Crystal Dynamics haven't made use of locks/keys/switches/buttons (that were pretty much all the Core Design games could do, as far as puzzles went) as Core Design did.
(Also consider that maybe you've become a more experienced raider since your Core-raiding days).
The graphics are nice but nothing special - this is a PS3! I’m going to compare any game now to metal gear solid 4 because that’s simply the best thing I’ve played and TRU still looks like a PS2 game in comparison. Oh no! She can't open the cupboards/doors on her little boat? And I payed good money for this game
Lara herself - she moves far too fast which happened in the last 2 games.
Lara's supposed to be fast. If she were too slow, the game would be a chore to get through.
Environments are beautiful but what happened to no music like in the previous games - the idea of being alone. The music is beautiful too but the whole time?
It's been toned down since TR:L. If you don't want the music playing when you're raiding, you could turn the sound/music off.
The best part of the game is the trailer and its Lacrymosa soundtrack and the main TRU theme.
Well, if that's what you felt was most enjoyable in the game...
Ever since coming to PS2 tomb raider has been ruined. What? You're complaining because the option of being able to be helped is there? I can understand complaining that the game isn't as challenging as it could be; but complaining that there's a help feature? Don't use it if you don't want to, and those that need it, or want to use it, can use it.
Crystal Dynamics have ruined my favourite game. Originally I thought Uncharted was the cheap rip off of Tomb Raider, now it's hard to tell which is worse.
"Ever since coming to PS2 tomb raider has been ruined."? Core Design were the first to bring TR to the PS2 ;)
Crystal Dynamics are just taking TR in a different direction, which differs slightly from where it was.

I prefer Legend, if only because it runs better on my computer. But I also think the secrets in Legend were better--each map had a theme, and it wasn't just these silly little diamond-shaped things that you didn't know what they were. Also, you could unlock outfits, upgrades, cheats, etc. with the rewards.
To me it feels like TRU spent too much time on the glitz (ooh, Lara gets dirty, how revolutionary) and not enough time making the game worthwhile in terms of replay value. Don't get me wrong, it's a fun game and I've been enjoying it, but it definitely didn't live up to the hype. For me, TRU is better than TRA but not as good as TRL.

I disagree on all points except for the puzzles, which are quite easy in my opinion. They could have made them harder, but what would/could be the consequence of that? Mostly newbies would find the game too hard and get frustrated about it, give up and eventually dislike it. They apparently wanted to reach and please different types of gamers, not only the hardcore TR-fans.
But it is good to say what you think about this game, for the makers can use it when creating the next one and make it even better. ;)

Just because people have trouble on puzzles doesnt make them newbies, ive been playing TR for 11 years or so and i got stuck on TRU, so am i a newbie?
Its just how someone plays the game, just because your better at something doesnt make anyone who isnt as good as you a newbie hehe :)
It's actually good that they wanted to reach the wide variety of gamers, its better that way in my opinion. Let anyone who is able, enjoy the game :rasp:
and yes i agree, with feedback they get, they can make TR 9 even better

Of course that doesn't make you a newbie!
I mean gamers who are completely new to the series. We are used to hard puzzles in the TR-games (especially TR-4.............:nut: ) and don't mind spending hours trying to solve them and break our heads over it. No, we even love it, cause that's exactly what we liked about the series in the first place and what made us fans. We all get stuck, it's supposed to be that way! :D
However, some of the new players may not like that, and to find the right balance between what those people might still consider as not frustrating and what we want can be hard for the creators. You can't please everybody, that's just the way it is.

CD reaching different types of gamers, yes! Why not? (Tailor the game to the player...)
The puzzles could be made harder, thanks to the gadgets CD have put into the game. (Perhaps something holding CD back from making uber-puzzles was concern over whether the help tools worked or not.) The gadgets (like "Field Assistance", or the "Sonar Map") allow players who do not want to spend time trying to figure out the puzzles can just get Lara to tell them how to do it. Players who don't want help, just don't have to press the button. Same goes for exploration, CD can put in more complex maps, so people can be stuck. Those that want to progress through quickly and get some action can use the Sonar map, and those that don't mind a bit of getting lost don't have to use the Sonar map.
I do not see why some people would then complain about the implementation of help features; without these features the game would've been without any exploration, and puzzles far easier than what they have now.
Here's hoping for some great help systems, and some uber-hard puzzles in the next game.
(Some people within the TR-fan category will struggle with the puzzles; not everyone did find them so easy, nor the exploration so plain. CD did a good job with TR:U).

Agreed! Except for when you're escaping the bridge room in Thailand, and you have to do one of those darn wall-run-jump-backward things. The camera really nerfed it, I kept ending up in the water. But alas.

Lara herself - she moves far too fast which happened in the last 2 games.
This is sooo true. She moves way too fast.
And most of the animations/transitions between movements are very jumpy/unnatural.
I've noticed this since the beta version was displayed and all of you said "It's only beta" or whatever.

I don't know, its just the matter if every ones different opinions. some people havent had a problem with the animations and others have. also there never was a beta, just a demo, think thats what you refering to
i'm with RG on this one, I'd rather her be moving at a good fast paced like in TRU(which wasnt too fast but at the same time not slow, good pace) than completely water logged, weighed down slow Lara.
Shes athletic and a pro at what she does, you cant expect her movements not to be at good speed

I don't think she moves too fast, but certainly some of her movements (vaulting up to different ledges, the swan dive) seem...well, rushed.

I agree on the swandive animation, which is a little too fast in my opinion. I prefer the way it was in TRA and TRL, slower/smoother and more graceful.
The other animations are fine by me.

All I heard was "BAAAAAAAAAAAAAWWWW!"
Don't want the help icons on?
Turn them off.
Don't like the music playing in the background?
Turn it off.
Hate how fast Lara moves during the game?
Make her walk the whole game if it's that serious.
What point is there in having the cabinets on her yacht being interactive?
She raids Tombs, not cabinets and drawers.

Seriously guys the music is awesome. Better than Legend, I mean it was good and all but it felt like Lara had a freaking stereo on her back the whole time playing very loud and noticable music. I haven't played the full game but at least in the Thailand level I heardly noticed it unless I made an effort to listen... Very subtle and added more to the isolation affect.

I think TRU is hard. I have played TRL, TRA, AOD and now on TRU. Anyway the puzzles are not easy to solve, not for me anyway but I can get through it. This game is about getting lost. :D You have to find your way back and not get lost. I get lost easy, even in real life, so it's hard for me. I got stuck more than once.
I love the music and the graphics, and the puzzles. Is very fun for me.
True the camera you have to work with, to move and there are some bugs and you get stuck.
Still I really like this game, maybe because I can swing on poles and walk on balance beams. It's hard but not super hard. I like it that way. And true I like exploring, which is also fun in this game.
I think the graphics are very very good, and my boyfriend he does not play TR but when he seen the graphics he said. I really like the graphics on the game, they did a good job.
You can go back and play levels just load the game. It's already saved I believe.
Or start a new game, then save each time it loads a new level, if I am wrong on the save thing. I'll have to check it out more, right now I am trying to complete the game.

Oh yeah. Because Tomb Raider is all about running and walking only. That's it.
BTW, this is mainly about Puzzles Complaints, right?
I think the puzzles are great! I really like them!
It's way more interesting and complex than the ones in TRL.

I guess you can't please everyone, but at least Eidos made an attempt, and bridged the gap. I realize as you should as well that one of the reasons for the visuals and glitchieness was the fact that TRU was also to be released on the Wii and PS2. That could be why it falls short of next gen perfection. MGS4 was released only for one platform: PS3 so they could utilized all the muscle PS3 could provide. I have played both Uncharted and Underworld, TRU is a different Treasure hunting kind of game. Uncharted also was only released for one platform: PS3 and ditto on the muscle utilization. Uncharted had puzzles, simple but it did have them. The mercs had better AI's in Drakes fortune, lots of dodging, indeed lots of combat. In fact the game starts with shootings. After a diving expedition on a boat. Now what does that remind anyone about?;) Undead people/things? So it isn't the best next gen experience to be had, but lets face it there is worse games out there. Thank you Eidos for TRU an all around decent TR experience. Great job  Keep um coming, and raise the bar.
And now for my dance *dances*
