View Full Version : Wait, wait, WAIT! "Mild Suggestive Themes"?: A Look at the ESRB

Call me slow for just really paying attention to the ESRB, or any ESRB rating for that matter.
Of course, I love the fact that they are bringing back the blood (it never made the game any better, but it makes it realistic and provides lulz. YAY, lulz! =D ). Language, that's expected, with all the things going on (gun fights, melee, etc). But am I the only one who noticed the "Mild Suggestive Themes" on the rating?
Now before you say "Oh LC, quit being so immature :eyerolleyerolleyeroll:", I'm gonna break things down a bit for those who normally confuse my somewhat...lengthy posts.
:)
Tomb Raider + ESRB =/= Mild Suggestive Themes
I mean, seriously, when has anything in TR ever been "provocative" (LOL, with the exception of a certain cutscene in AOD)? That got me thinking, maybe TR is starting to get a bit more "hardcore" than most people think. Now, I'm not saying a rating makes a game more of video game; I can have fun with Mario Party 7 on my NGC more than I could some of my T and M rated games. But what I'm saying is, each year, TR just gets deeper and more action packed, and...INTERESTINGLY INTENSE. So, what is your take on this? What would you consider provocative about TR, if anything? Honest opinions people. Oh, btw, I'm not nitpicking, I just made a very interesting observation and wanted to see how you guys feel.

Do we get a shower scene?
I take the "Mild Suggestive Themes" as "I suggest you pay more attention to your family and less so of Lara's buns."
Cheese is nice.

It's the booty shorts and some of the costumes of Lara, Natla, and Amanda. That is why they have stated mild suggestive themes.

When has it been provocative?! um, lots of times, actually, in the OG days of Tomb Raider under Core. For instance TR2, the end scene of her in nightgown and shower. Where else um... TR5, with Larson in Rome, Larson and Pierre sneak up on her. Larson has to frisk her, Lara says something like, "Why don't you try the back pockets?" then Lara kicks him in the unmentionables  then there's the scene every KTEB love's *sigh* the similar frisking by Kurtis Trent. So I don't think Mild Suggestive Theme mean anything new, like nudity taking place. Probably just going old school again, which would be a plus. It's just that the new CD stuff E rated compared to Core's.

A rather conservative Wetsuit, but sure she shows booty, I would rather she have her weaing a scuba suit with goggles and oxy tank, and those foot flipper thingies. Don't ask me why:nut: Booty is not all bad, but before they try to turn her into a vixen they should first give us more booty kickery i.e weapons. Sassy ness is ok so long as it does go into the twilight zone like in TR4, example: young Lara talking to Von Croy about assets. NOW THAT WAS WEIRD, not to mention creepy.

LOL, pretty good responses so far.
As to the past games being "provocative", naraku, they never received the same reasoning for the content. So maybe there is something else added in TRU. In TR5, the only content listed in the ESRB was Animated Blood and Violence. Same for TR2. I kind of asked myself "Why raise the eyebrow now?", y'know?
:)
EDIT: Yes, I agree. Von Croy must have been PedoBear in disguise.

I don't think they'll necessarily add extra in - Core did that. I think it's just ESRB being more sensitive to Lara Croft's sex symbolism, and maybe a couple of the outfits are a bit too provocotive to let it slide.

In one thread, there's been so many, and can't remember which, there was talk about the standards for ratings have changed since 1996, things that would be rated teen in 96' might not make it to Teen now. Perhaps it's why she looked at bloodless hands in TRA after killing Larson, compared to blood oozing ones in AOD. Though this Mild Suggestive themes ESRB could hint at too much skin or more than usual.

DUN DUN DUN!
BTW, they showed blood on her hands in TRA, in the palms of her gloves.

It's really hard to see and the only way you can see it is if you play through the entire game again, because you can't see it in the cutscenes or when replaying levels.

Hmm... I wonder what the whole there will be blood in TRU thread was about. There could have been though, I'm not sure cause I didn't much care for the whole Lara is a good girl she cries when she shoots a bad guy deal. Just passed GOW and now that was a game worthy of the blood gore, nudity, violence rating. Don't worry LC I don't think TRU will approach anywhere near that kind of suggestive themes.

I dont think core or cyrstal dynamics would put any overly sexual things into the Tomb raider games because that really would ruin it. I think it just a few of Lara's outfits or maybe ESRB are being too sensitive.

Legend has "Suggestive Themes" (not "mild") and Anniversary also has "Mild Suggestive Themes" according to the ESRB (http://www.esrb.org/)
I don't think we're in for anything particularly shocking here.
Also if there was nudity or partial nudity the ESRB would say this. Soulcalibur IV was rated for "Partial Nudity" and "Sexual Themes".

If anyone would be acting slutty in TRU it would be Amanda, not Lara (CD would do that on purpose so they can put Lara into tiny outfits without us finding it slutty at all  )

@tombraidergal: Yeah, I'm a girl.
I don't find anything she wears "slutty". Shows some skin, but it's all in how you wear an outfit that makes it slutty. Any girl can put on a short pair of shorts and a midriff shirt, and could be going hiking out in the hot weather or partake in vigorous exercise or something. But any girl can put on that same outfit and walk around with a bunch of guys, and purposely bend over a gazillion times to "fix her shoe". Hell, I wear some pretty short shorts and a sports bra to gymnastics practice, but you'll never see me wear that around my house or going out with friends to hangout.
I think it's funny when guys are shocked that I play video games. I love the facial expression:

HMMM now that i think there have been quite many instances where TR has been provocative in the past, obviuously the one everyone remembers is the shower scene at the end of 'Home sweet home ' in TR2. But there have always been bits of TR that have been provocative, whether it is the slightly too revealing costume in TR3 or the flirtatious intro cut-scene with Pierre and Larson in TRC. However these days I think almost anything to do with a game like TR could be considered s containing 'mild suggestive themes' it probably just depends on who you are and what you believe in relation to the story being told.

I suppose so but these were the gool ol' days before rating had come in. The first TR game to be regulated here in the UK was TR3 and even then they weren't as hard core as they are these days- you have to have a parental advisory sign if a character gets wet in a game these days.

Whether we like it or not, Lara is a sexy character. Eidos knows that and will continue to . . . accentuate that with perhaps-not-suggestive-to-you-but-maybe-to-other-people costumes. If she shows ANY CLEAVAGE OR BOOTY, they will label suggestive themes.;)

It's because her breasts have physics in Legend, Anniversary and Underworld and she had far too little polygons in TR1-5 to make the suggestive themes that realistic...now she has rather realistic body parts...and I don't think her breasts had physics in AoD, plus she didn't really wear that many revealing outfits.
Like Soul Calibur, if you look at the rather revealing woman's outfits, not only are they exaggerated, but they, too, have physics on their breasts.
Do you think CrystalD used the physics engine on her breasts first?

Does it matter? No not really, quite a few TR games(I think) have it and just about EVERY freaking RPG has it. Her outfits being skin tight and the way water rolls off her and the physics of her movements......it doesn't really matter. It's not like she is flashing skin or intentionally moving it a sexy way. I mean, is there any REAL reason to add on the whole arcing back flip up from a ledge......not really other then making her look hot! And you know what sells REAL well.....sex....it's a marketing move.
