View Full Version : Of all things - the JUMP feels really bad in the demo.

I'm not talking about the jump from ledge to ledge.
Just do a jump dive off the boat. She jumps and then she falls really fast straight down. This was PER-FECT in Tomb Raider: Legend and Anniversary. It was a really smooth, natrural feeling. It was awesome.
It sounds like a nit pick, but - why would you mess up a good thing?
Um, how much will this change for the real thing?

TR:U's engine was built from scratch, rather than modifying the existing TR:L/TR:A engine, so it's not deliberate messing up from TR:L/TR:A.
And up until the game "goes gold" (code finalised, sent off for production) anything can be tweaked in the game. Depending on whether or not they decide this is a problem, it may or may not be fixed/improved.

Yes,
There are bunch of moments in animation that look really awkward
and lack the usual sense of mass and grace that Lara has had in
previous games.
In general many animations look too fast, but these are the ones
I mainly complain about.
1. The dive, yes too fast too steep.
2. Also dive when swimming, way too fast and too steep.
In general all swimming and diving look unnatural and awkward.
3. Stopping after running. Even when dashing, Lara stops like she's hit the wall.
No slowing down steps at all.
Other odd things:
1. Spiders and bats coming in regular intervals. Very odd to see about a dozen
spiders marching in line in exact same spot.
2. Totally vaporating spiders and vases when they're hit or shot.
They just vanish to dust.
3. You can walk through corpses, they're not actual objects in game.
And Yes, I liked the demo otherwise. Been a fan of the series since 1996,
but these things REALLY bugged me.

I don't think they're bugs. They're creative decisions that I don't agree with.
Therefore, sadly, they will very likely remain the same in the finished game.
Not that it's the end of the world... or maybe it is...

I agree with you both, SpiderMonkee & mruottin. The animations didn't feel right. I dedicated a thread to it here:

Here's hoping CD takes our feedback & that this demo is not final code. :o

What about the way she jumps and grabs. Her arms suddernly latch onto things, she doesn't put them out in preparation for the grab.

all these things really annoyed me aswell like the spiders and bats all follow the same path and wen they die they dissapear, i wanna zoom in on them to see what they look like but its impossible to see them cus they jump on you
and the swan dive just makes me go" huh wah hmmmm uhh...?????!!! what" it looks so un-natural way to quick and i hate the fact that she does back tumbles instead of back handspring now

.... and i hate the fact that she does back tumbles instead of back handspring now
She doesn't do awesome BACK HANDSPRINGS ANYMORE?
No way! That seriously sucks. I turned off the demo early because I didn't want to play it in hopes the animation and feel gets better. But the little extra touches like handsprings were what made TR:L such an awesome game for me.
That seriously sucks if they screwed that up.

The character animation, for me atleast, is one of the key elements
in a Tomb Raider -game. And in this demo it seems like one the
weaker things in it... and that worries me a bit.
I fear that someone in CD has gotten the idea to make moves
faster to get more responsive controls and therefore quicken the
gaming pace. Which would be cool ... in a Ninja Gaiden -game.
But Tomb Raider games are about exploration and the harmonic
and, yes, sometimes slow animations should reflect that.
Hopefully this is old build and things will be different in the finished product.
Otherwise this would be the first Tomb Raider game ever, where Laras
animation is one of weakest things in it.
Assassins Creed has raised the bar, but it should not be unreachable to
Lara Croft.

I always feel a little on the defense of a game I'm hyped about before I get to play it. But I'm playing their demo, and I stopped because it's kind of spoiling my experience a little. I might have to wait and see the final.
For this holiday season, there's a chance I'll get 3 or 4 games, but there are already like ten I want. So, even good games won't make the cut. Gears 2, Resistance 2, and Tomb Raider Legend 2 was what I was hoping. But it seems TR:Underworld may feel disappointing to me. So I'm not sure.

Lol - that's what I was thinking!! Giggles.
But have you checked out DEAD SPACE yet?
It's friggin awesome too!!! I have put it aside to play the TR:U demo... but damn... it's pretty good.
Reminds me a little of DINO CRISIS 3 - but more twisted and graphic.
Which reminds me to email XBLIVE to patch that game so I can play it in my 360!

*Dismisses complaints*
I'm nothing but pleased with the animations. At first I felt the animations might not be too smooth from watching beta videos, but after playing the demo, I feel completely reasurred.
The motion capture has really paid off and I love the animations. They are both smooth and elegant. The only complaint I will not dismiss is a camera related complaint. At rare occasions the camera is not perfectly controlled, but it's definitely still usable and it does not hinder gameplay for me atleast. All this nit-picking is starting to annoy me.
Get used to the demo because the actual game will probably not be too different. Which is absolutely more than fine for me because this is without a doubt; Crystal D's best work. :D

I agree. I thought the demo was great, movements were great, felt very easy to control Lara,I didn't necessarily have as big of problems with the camera as most people. Only real problem with it is a glitch i ran into which I've stated in another thread where lara either popped up on the other side or fell to her death.
I agree with the former Josh not turned Atlantis that this looks to be Crystal's best work yet and its only the demo :D

If you were talking to me about Dead Space, yes, I have it :D

@ Josh: I kept the "3735" bit so you guys would recognise me :)
I never had a problem with the camera either. At one point going through the corridoor with bats there was a slight issue but it was easily rectified with a small push of the right analogue stick. So no complaints from me. :D

Bump - in the hopes that CD is at least aware, just in case it's not too late.
Again, it was so perfect before. Such a shame, since it looks like a really beautiful game that I'd like to enjoy without this distraction.

Some other animations that bug me are when she's shimmying around corners. Her body seems to jerk around.
Also when she's aiming from a ledge her arm and legs randomly flick around.
The worst thing I saw in the demo was when jumping from a pole near the Shiva statue. She did the most ridiculously fast front flip in less than half a second, over a three foot gap.
Generally the animations seem unrefined and lacking in grace and precision.
It puzzles me as to why they decided to rework all the animations, as they were probably one of the most impressive things about the previous two games. If it ain't broke, don't fix it! :mad2:
