At the time Tomb Raider Anniversary were developped by Crystal Dynamics, another company, Core Design, the one that created Tomb Raider 1 up to Angel of Darkness, was also creating a remake, their own one, at the same time.
But Core Design's Tomb Anniversary got canceled half in development and Crystal's one was officially released.
So, when people say "Core TRA", they mean "Core Design's Tomb Raider Anniversary edition", meaning their version (which was really different).
If you search by yourself on youtube or other site, you can easily find many other informations, such as screenshots or trailers.
I hope I helped you.

Actually, it was 80% done, but they coudln't release it (even if it was finished) because people would have wanted Core back, and that would cause problems.

Wow! I didn't know.......god I must've been sitting under a rock or something at that time :nut:
Is there a way to play that game, or even a small part of it?

OMG after seeing a trailer of this on youtube I'm so glad this wasn't released. Handing Lara over to Crystal was the best thing Core done in my opinion. It looked worst than AOD and was 80% complete. I would have been put off TR for good if this had been released.

Core's TRA looked really bad

well, try building your own engine and see what YOU can do.

Nope, it was never released. But I'm sure it will get leaked in the future.

Well it´s not that bad I guess.........
If they released it in a special limited edition (which most likely will never happen), I would so buy it to check it out. And if it's leaked then I would definitely play it, but it would probably be full of bugs :o

I think it looks bad, some of Lara's movements are the same as TR1-4, the graphics aren't that good and there's something weird about the game :nut:
But this is my opinion and since I've played CD's TRA it's hard for me not to compare them.

I don't think it looked that bad I mean it kinda looked cool it was an improvement from the 1st one at least so that's an up side the down side is that they could of done a lot better than that I mean seriously that would have been a downgrade but I would so totally play because you know it TR:D :D :rasp:

It would be full of bugs, and they won't finish it. So if you will ever get to play it, the biggest chance is that it would get leaked.

It was actually a PSP game, and in my opinion it looked pretty good for a PSP game.
She could also dual aim/shoot just like Underworld's Lara and there were also a very cool spider trap planned for one of the levels; so she had improved since TR 1-4...
I think I'm one of the few who thought that Core's Anniversary look quite good, although I have nothing bad to say about Crystal's version too (well, apart from some levels missing parts, but I still enjoy the game). :)

PSP hmm... well it didn't make it anyway. I believe in you when you say that it could have done great for Core and etc. but I like the way TR is right now :)

That's fine, I just wanted to clear some stuff up such as people saying that the graphics were bad, etc.
I love playing Crystal's version of Anniversary; but sometimes I really wish that we could play Core's just to see what it is/was like. ^.^;

Guilty.
I really thought it was for PS2, I did saw something about PSP back than, but didn't pay much attention. Well, you liked how Core's TRA looked like, I liked how TR:AoD could have been. I guess sometimes is good to change.

Yeah, I've seen a few interviews saying it was for the PSP and the leaked video also had the PSP logo; so I find it strange when people compare it to the PS2 version of Crystal's Anniversary and then say why the latter looks better.
It's not a big deal, but I just thought that I should explain why the graphics look different/weird. :)

So that's the trailer that was in GameTaps "Tomb Raider 10 Year Retrospecitve" (a video I loved and burned to DVD)....they said an early trailer leaked online, everyone thought it was the new game...but I guess it was Core's version. Cool to watch. Not as cool as TRA...but...I still love Core for all the TR games except AOD

I really do hope it does get leaked so we can play it.

well, try building your own engine and see what YOU can do.
(This sounds like an interesting project...) Although a TR game isn't made by a game engine alone, it's more in terms of design (and visuals)...
Saying it 'looks' bad isn't so much a reflection on the game engine itself as on the animations... a better remark would've been "make your own set of 3D animations, and see what YOU can do".
(It would be interesting to see some of the results).
I wonder who the publisher was (gonna be), and why they would fund a development team for "80%" of the game development, and then cancel it... (why they spent the money at all, or why they didn't carry through with it).

you have to feel sorry for core, i found this interview:
First of all we would like to congratulate you on Lara receiving the converted ‘blue plaque’ award. Will it be sad to see the Derby offices go or do you focus on the positive of Lara being acknowledged with such an honour?
Richard: It’s great that Lara has received the Blue Plaque, regardless of where her current home resides.
How did the Anniversary Edition come about? Did Eidos request a remake specifically for the 10th anniversary or was the game concept left to Core Design’s imagination?
Richard: Core developed the idea, myself and a few others came up with the idea and suggested making it. We knew we wanted to remake the original for the new generation and celebrate the 10th Anniversary of the first game.
The timeline of events has been subject to much speculation among the fans. When did work first begin on Tomb Raider Anniversary Edition?
Richard: Work first began in late 2005, we had a year to finish it which would have meant the game would have been released in time for xmas 2006, the 10th Anniversary year.
At the time you were making this game was Toby Gard already working with Crystal Dynamics on Tomb Raider: Legend? Was it ever a possibility that he’d be working with your team?
Richard: Yes, Toby was working on Legend at the same time as we were working on 10th Anniversary. There was never any talk of Toby working with us though.
A lot of fans are confused as to why the project was actually cancelled, it seemed as though it was almost complete. Was the cancellation because of the series changing developers? If so, why was the game commissioned in the first place?
Richard: It was a strange time really, we’d just finished Free Running for PSP/PS2 and had developed a really good control system and camera, we started messing about with a Lara model on the PSP in the Free Running engine and the idea of 10th Anniversary was born. We suggested it to Eidos who allowed us to develop it, but when Core was sold to Rebellion it seemed like they didn’t want the franchise to go ‘out-of-house’ hence the cancellation of our project.
Other than the graphics, how does the Anniversary Edition differ from the original Tomb Raider game? Was it a priority for Core to stay as true to the original as possible?
Richard: We wanted to stay true to the original in terms of story and level flow, but we also wanted to offer the player something new in terms of moves and puzzles, so many of the big puzzles were twisted around to be different but still familiar to the player. We wanted to make the good bits even better and re-imagine the bad bits into something spectacular, we even planned an new extended ending level.
Who was to be the voice of Lara Croft in the Anniversary Edition game? Was Jonell Elliot considered?
Richard: We intended to use Jonell for the voice of Lara, but the voice recording was never done, it’s one of the things we leave until late on in the production process.
Did the script undergo many changes? Was it ever considered to use the same voice track from the original Tomb Raider game?
Richard: We were going to include the original FMV sequences as unlockables, but redo the movie sequences as in-game cutscenes that allow the game and movie sequences to blend between each other seamlessly, this would have been cool.
It was said quite some time back that the level design for TRAE was built upon the original level structures of Tomb Raider 1. Could you tell us more about this?
Richard: We used the original levels as templates for the 10th Anniversary edition, but we then went in and tweaked and altered the critical path through each level to allow the player a new experience when playing it, instead of just playing the original game with better GFX.
The Angel of Darkness gave the player the ability to choose what Lara said to the other characters. Did you decided to include this feature in the Anniversary Edition as well?
Richard: No, we thought the player would rather get on with the actual game-play, Lara prefers her guns rather than talking her way out of trouble. Angel of Darkness tried to be too many games rolled into one, the Shenmue style conversation system was one of these.
Shortly after the leak of the TRAE trailer it was stated that the version used was that of the PS2 build. Is it true that Core were planning on releasing the game for the PS2 and PC as well as the PSP stated on the trailer?
Richard: The alleged trailer was actually from a running PSP version, we had a great PSP engine which could throw tons of polys and FX around, and it was looking very cool, the PS2 version was looking even better.
It was noted by quite a lot of fans that the Lara Croft model for this game is strikingly similar to the Tomb Raider Legend model. Could you fill us in on some of the design decisions on the look and feel?
Richard: We actually used a modified Legend Lara for our game to keep the two in the same style We made a conscious decision early on that Legend and 10th Anniversary should look similar in graphical style, especially Lara.
The double crosshair was spotted in the Anniversary Edition trailer. Was this an original idea from Core Design or something you were asked to incorporate from Legend?
Richard: We had already started working on the double crosshair before we really got a look at Legend, but after seeing it we changed the graphic on ours to look like theirs, Lara had true double targeting in our version of 10th Anniversary, it played really well.
We have seen animation of a bear performing a surprise attack on Lara. What other elements of improved AI would we have been treated to?
Richard: Most of the enemies were given the ability to climb and/or jump, which meant that Lara could no longer stand atop a pillar and blast the enemy to oblivion, instead she’d have to fight them properly. Enemies such as the wolves could hunt in packs, some would head straight for Lara while others would try to flank her from behind, it was all working very well.
In terms of the score for the game what was planned? Was it decided that an updated and re-composed version of the original Tomb Raider’s music was going to be used?
Richard: Yes, we had the original composer Nathan McCree lined up to compose a new version of the original score and other new pieces too.
As the game was being made to mark the 10-year anniversary were there going to be any special features (retrospective videos, imagery etc…) accompanying the game?
Richard: Yes, we wanted to include a 10th Anniversary making of video and the original FMV sequences, we also wanted to have a viewer to allow the player to see the original models and animations from the PS1 version. We also had lots of concept art for 10th Anniversary which would have made it to the disc.
What kind of camera control was there? Did it have the ability to switch between fixed-behind-Lara cam and user-controlled cam?
Richard: The camera and control system from Free Running was adapted for 10th Anniversary, it was quite a lazy camera system that never made sudden movements, the biggest breakthrough came when we forced Lara to rotate around the camera when the player pushed left or right on the controller, this was integral to Free Running and meant the player never had to make any awkward adjustment on the controller.
What excited you most about the game? What new features? Developers always have something up their sleeve with a new game that they don't tell anyone about in interviews and they wait for the players to see for themselves...
Richard: We had lots of stuff to play with on 10th Anniversary, the whole climbing system was great, she could jump sideways across gaps and reach levers that would drop down and become swing poles, there’s was lots of dynamic stuff like that, nothing was what it seemed. Pretty much every level had been re-imagined to give the player something new and refreshing to play. As mentioned before a new extended ending level was planned which pitted Lara against a huge Atlantean War Machine as she tried to make her final escape from the crumbling Atlantis down lava filled tunnels.
What are your future plans? Are you working on any exciting projects now that you can tell us about?
Richard: I have since left Core/Rebellion in 2006 and went to Sega Racing for a while, working on Sega Rally Revo. Me and one of my former workmates are now in the process of setting up a new sister studio for one of the big UK developers, can’t tell you any more than that at the moment.
i feel sorry for them, its quite heartbreaking, i found it on www.tombraideranniversary.com
think what core was going through! Poor people, anyway, cyrstal dynamics was good, legend and anniversary are way too cool, cant wait for underworld, and here is the trailer...

I think the graphics looks really bad. Like they're only half done. But it would certainly be cool to try it out ;)

Okay, I did not know Core's Anniversary was near completion. I didn't realize it was even in development. I thought the company quietly disappeared. It's insane to consider two developers were creating the same title game.
Anyway, I just found a video comparing Crystal's and Core's versions with trailers and gameplays.
Crystal Dynamics Vs. Core Design : The war for TR Anniversary
(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B2p_KG4K82Q)
ETA: Now I wonder how Core's version would be like. Oh, and in the video Core's raptors were huge ! While Crystal's seemed like sizes of an almost fully grown horse.
