EDIT:
Players who prefer action sequences over puzzle portions will have the option to ask Lara how to solve a particular puzzle, allowing them to move onto the next scene without having to spend 20 minutes to an hour figuring out how to move on.

oh i get what its saying, sounds cool but, im going to be doing the puzzles, would be too easy and take the fun out of it just to zip through the puzzle rather than trying to figure it out.
Thanks for the news Rexie, much appreciated

I actually was and still am surprised that they would implement an option that basically enables players to bypass the puzzles. I thought the puzzles were a fundamental feature to Tomb Raider, but obviously not.
Oh well.

... but just because the option is there does not mean that you have to use it.
puzzles are an intrinsic part of the game, to me. I will never bypass any of them. that's my personal tomb raider conduct. it doesn't really make sense to impose my conduct onto other players who might enjoy other aspects of the game ... and they cannot impose their conduct on me. seems to me that Crystal is dedicated to making the game appealing to as broad a base as possible without dictating to them what it is that you must like about the game. that smells refreshingly like a successful growth strategy. my anticipation and enthusiasm for TRU grows by leaps and bounds every day ...
(at this rate, Game of the Year won't be good enough ...) :)

Eric said this in the interview:
"...with our render engine and our new code, it's totally next generation now, like never before."
Is this mean, we can't turn off the NextGen effect in Underworld?

I just can imagine how the forums will look like after TRU is released:
"LyEK ZomFg! In teh oldar Gams u hav to sulv puzzls, Its gret thur CS feturd tis firure in TRU! I h8 teh puzzles!"

I was just wondering, why can't they port the ps2/wii version into PC and release it few months after NG TRU is released?

I understand that I do not have to use the option after all, it's an option. I was simply passing comment on the option.
Nevertheless, I concur on the reason you suggested why they would implement such a thing. Crystal do come across as attempting to appeal to more than just the current Tomb Raider fans.

But it all screams 'Locking in more fans and getting more money' to me.

I don't think it screams locking in more fans or that it's silly to pander to a different audience than the original enjoyers of Tomb Raider.
I think, with the release of Legend, CD realized they had attracted an entirely new clientèle. With more action, less puzzles, a new group of fans began to emerge and I think it's quite clever of CD to gear this new game to both audiences in order to:
1. Keep those fans happy and pleased with the game.
and
2. Yes, keep both groups in order to reach a larger fan base and, therefore, make more money.
Honestly though, it sometimes drives me crazy how people go off on companies for wanting to make more money. IT'S WHAT THEY DO! Haha. It's a business and if they can find ways in which to make it even more lucrative. . .then, by all means, they will do it because it's a job.
I do think CD are very compassionate towards the original fans, but at the same time, want to make a name for themselves with the new fans they acquired with Legend. It makes sense to me, business-wise.
So. . .I'm with rabid on this one.:D

yeah i agree. Its the companies job to make money, they dont put a product out there NOT to make money, like milk said, its a business.
I personally like the fact that they're also trying to bring in new fans because you cant expect this franchise to survive on the same fans from 96 and im sure CD realizes that, more fans = more money = more possible games in the future and im all for that

Exactly. I absolutely detest when things I like disappear because I'm the only one who likes them. Haha, you've got to have a big enough fanbase to justify what it takes to create a product. Simple as that.
As long as we (the fans who enjoy the original aspects of the game) can be kept pleased by future games. . .then cool beans! And judging from Lindstrom's interviews so far, he seems to understand how much we love the exploration/discovery/puzzles.
Besides, with all the action and violence seen in other games. . .this whole puzzle stuff is a dying art. It's almost retro. That makes it cool. :D

Well actualy I believe action and puzzle games tend to specialize more into what they do. There are still are some great puzzle games out there... I just completed one...

I don't mind the option. I've always loved the puzzles, but sometimes they can get quite difficult causing me to look up a walkthrough or two. This way I can play the game and if a puzzle gets too hard for me, I feel comforted in the fact that I don't have to waste days to move on within the game. CD is a business and they are out to make money, so if this option allows for a larger TR fanbase, which would never be a bad thing, while at the same time still catering to original fans, then no one loses. It's a win/win for everybody. I just can't wait to actually have the option in front of me.. in my tv room. ;)

As long as the quality of the puzzles doesn't drop, I'm all for this option. Personally, I'll be sure to solve the puzzles on my own, but after I've finished the game this option can be great for a casual play-through, especially with friends.
This makes me think of Alone in the Dark's option to skip chapters of the game. I played with a friend and we got stuck at the very end of a chapter. I had beaten it before though so I didn't mind skipping that specific part and we continued having fun. I didn't like the idea of the feature at first but in that situation I discovered the value of it.

I think it's for speedrunners, who try to make the game as easy as possible.

I don't see any problem with putting in an option to get help with the puzzles. How is that any different (other than being more convenient) than people being able to go to a site like Stella's and read a walkthrough? People have done that countless times with the old games (and I'll admit I've used it occasionally), so now instead of having to go online, we can get the help within the game itself. No big deal.

Agreed.
I think there are a lot of people who go to Stella's for just one quick fix. . .but it's easy to rely on it too much and use it all the time. I hope skipping through the puzzles won't be like that.
What I'm imagining is what someone has said already. It might be fun to turn off the really difficult puzzles when you feel like playing but you don't feel like playing through ALL of the puzzles. . .like if you're trying to get to a particular part of the level to show a friend or something like that.
It'll be good for speedruns and depending on your mood, whether you want puzzles or more action. I think it's a good idea because it fits the bill for all of the fans, whether you are an all-puzzle lover, an all-action lover, or a little bit of both.
