View Full Version : Key binding: Gold vs. T2
I just completed "Running Interference" for the first time. I was blown away by the improved graphics over Gold. Everything looks more polished and even. I loved the AI faces--much more realistic, and the movement seemed better to me as well. The blues and greens in the mansion walls were stunning. It was also amusing to see the chandeliers--which looked exactly like the opera chandeliers in "Song of the Caverns", like they had been directly imported.
The mission itself seemed really simplistic and short--like there was not much to it. Not even as challenging as "Bafford's Mansion", which is pretty straightforward. I assume this is a kind of training mission, and I assume this sequel will be at least as difficult as Gold, with larger maps and plots.
Question: do you keep the key bindings as they are, or do you change them to emulate the bindings in Gold? I was really thrown off having the "turn" and "slide" keys reversed, and needing two hands to run was not good at all. What's best for the long run?

Open the options and set your own and save them with any name you want. I have all mine set to the T2 bindings.
Was there an advantage to binding all games as T2 bindings, or did you just happen to play T2 first and learn that way? I'm trying to figure out if there's an inherent advantage to binding one way or the other, figuring I can just train my hands and mind to match either ginding method.
Right now, it feels slower to "run" with the "w" key AND the "shift" key, when before a single "w" key was enough.

I learned with T1, but I changed the bind for RUN/WALK to a single key and use CTL W for Creep.
So I use W for run, S for walk, and X for backup. I use F for crouch toggle and only use the strafe keys not the "turn" keys. So it's a little simpler in the overall.
I changed the weapon and inventory "Clear" to ~ and Backspace.
I also use a trackball and don't need the "Look" keys.
Awesome! That is a perfect setup. Thanks for sharing. :thumbsup:

I never tried T2 with the default bindings, changed them to my T1 custom bindings right out of the box. And my bindings sound almost identical to tBM's, which proves once again that great minds think alike. :rolleyes:

I started out setting bindings so Thief would resemble Doom. Then I made a a lot of modifications to put all movement keys together in a cluster. I can work all movement keys with my left hand, so my right hand remains on the mouse. Now I make other games resemble my modified Thief 2. Here are my main bindings:
run forward = up arrow
move backward = down arrow
move (strafe) left = left arrow
move right = right arrow
turn left and turn right are empty (only mouse turns)
walk forward = CTRL
toggle run to walk = SHIFT
toggle crouch = /
hold crouch = . (seldom used except crouch jump)
jump = enter
attack = left mouse
use = right mouse
my lean keys are also together
q = left
w = forward
e = right
For ghosting, the slowest possible creep is achieved by first couching then holding SHIFT then CTRL. Movement is barely noticeable. Releasing SHIFT in short intervals while CTRL is down makes for very quiet forward progress. This is smoother and slower than the tap-tap method required in Thief 1.
