View Full Version : Deus Ex 3 Release - What will be your RITUAL?

I know it's a little early but here's what I did for Deus Ex: Invisible War. I missed my final for a class and ended up flunking. The game was so hyped up that I couldn't stop playing it. I think I played till I could barely play no more then fell asleep.
After that experience i'm making sure not to get my hopes up and i'm just looking forward to a better game than Invisible War. Two years from now I might not be able to take any days off since i'll be studying hard but i'll definately get my hands on the game ASAP. ;)
Heck i'm going to go check if I can pre order.
So what are you guys going to do on launch day, 1 year roughly 1 year and a half from now?

What am I going to do the day DX3 launches? Why, check the torrents, naturally. :rasp:
Nah, just kidding. I'll probably cut myself off from the internet to avoid spoilers, then wait patiently for some two months after ze amerikan release date until it gets to where I live. Sigh.

Way too early! Everythings possible from "OOOOMG, GIMME THE GAME - NOOW!!!" to "Pah, not in thousand years I will support this slaughtering of DX."
If I will pre-order or not depends on the the overall impression of
- released screenshots / videos
- previews
- a demo
- score on metacritic (as long as there are enough reviewers already)

While I personally didn't not like IW, I think that kind of thinking sets the bar too low for the developers. They'll see comments like that and say "Well, we only need to put forth enough effort to be better than IW!". While they may not do that, it just sometimes feels like developers do that when they make a game anyway.
You're right in that you shouldn't get your hopes up, but at the same time you should expect a game of a nice caliber.
- a demo
I believe that this is the bullseye. I remember how I was drooling while playing the "tutorial" training mission in DX1. I got pulled in by the style of the gameplay so hard, that I HAD to buy the game. It was not a matter of choice. It was a matter of fate :D
And the feeling of playing a game of all times was stronger with each hour spent in it.

I like metacritic. It's just good for data. It takes a range of scores and says overall, this is how people feel. It really can't get more simple than that. If you're still undecided, you can read how people feel.

Seriously, as soon as I get my hands on it... I will be calling all my friends to say I'll be busy for quite a while and I'll be hanging a "Do Not Disturb" sign on my front door.
Hate to be cruel, but you know how it goes...
I'll stock up at the supermarket beforehand, close all the curtains, crank up the machine and PLAY!!!
Goodbye cruel world... :D

Currently, I'm trying hard not to get too hyped about DX3. The problem with being hyped is that the game won't get a fair chance and I'll definitely have a worse feeling when playing it than I would have when playing it more "unbiased", as far as that is possible with DX.
Probably I'll try to handle DX3 just like "any other game" and see if the game itself has the power to draw me in for more. So, I'll get the game pretty soon after its release, but will probably wait for the first few reviews and hopefully a demo, buy it, play it and see if it manages to keep me playing.

Wise decision. In fact im sure we all had our experience with gettin hyped over
a sequel of a "classic masterpiece" and gettin disappointed about what we got
then. For me Unreal 2 was a key-experience in that matter btw..
Personaly DX1 is not my holy grail of pc-games but clearly one of those games
i enjoyed playing and that marks a stepping stone in pc-gaming. Astonishingly
it seems out of reach to create a game with similar quality to this day,and the
annoncement DX3 is next-gen crossplatform dampens my pleasant anticipation
notedly. So,nothing euphoric here. We will see.

I'm already going to pre-order regardless of what ever happens. But anyway on Release day I'm going to be waiting 2-3 days later when I actually GET the game in the mail.
Please don't get hyped over Deus Ex 3, this is not a game that can/should be treated like Oblivion or Fallout3. I can already see it happening though.
What I'd like to ask is that Eidos be Honest to its customers please! when you are promoting the game please give us stuff we actually know will be in the final product. If you show us something impressive only to then take it away (aka Oblivion) since thats unethical.
Further more it'd be nice to get a heads up before a trailer comes out, I do see the point in Hype.. but what I don't like is being lied to and further more having fanatics go insane. Release parties would be ideal and allow us to communicate with those associated to the project. This gives you all an idea of who is interested in the game, who will be your initial purchasers and further more the impact of your media releases. Failure to use hype at correct times will result in failure (aka IWar, they didn't hype correctly, very few media releases.. Warren Spector mostly just did interviews as did Harvey Smith.. there wasn't anything really exciting about the game.)
What I want to establish is that you have a teaser trailer and a 2 year wait.. Don't act like fanatics since you have no reason to, unless of course you're one of those people with no lives outside of this forum.
:D
I think I'm pretty clear on how Eidos can really motivate consumers. If the game sucks.. well at least they'll know their franchise has great appeal still and may go further to make an MMORPG (which I am hoping for! :D anything to be better than Neocron please :D)
As much as MMORPGs are a crowded Market a Deus Ex MMO would be highly successful just on the IP alone. So ultimately they have a lot of options if the game flops. Which I hope it doesn't because I'd like to see the franchise to thrive.. I think an MMO is inevitable me thinks. We've all be talking about that for years so hopefully Eidos listened :D

No please. EIDOS. No MMORPG.
As for what I'll be doing. Playing it would be more of a sensible option than say drooling over it (And possibly destryoing all fragmentations of data!)

Do NOT make jokes about that! A DX MMO would mean Id have to go jihad on Eidos -_-.. jk ;p
But seriously.. Im going to buy a new computer for this game only. Im expecting my first born and Ill throw away its first 10 years of allowance and its university savings for this game xD

I don't really like that either, but if they take it away because it simply doesn't fit the game, then it's ok to me.

I'm not pre-ordering. This is what I exactly what I am doing:
4:00pm, 2 days before launch day: Buying iron-on paper for making t-shirt graphics.
11:00am, day before launch day: Using iron-on paper to make a shirt with a giant DX logo on the front.
12:00am, day before launch day: Eating.
3:00pm, day before launch day: Playing through Deus Ex.
7:00pm, day before launch day: Playing through Deus Ex: Invisible War.
5:00am, launch day: Waking up.
7:00am, launch day: Going to EB Games with fellow DX fans, waiting for the store to open. Wearing DX shirt.
9:00am, launch day: EB Games opens, I touch my copy of Deus Ex 3, and a beam of blinding light destroys all other games in the store.
9:30am, launch day: Play game in between states of shock.

8:00pm check to see that my order will arrive 1 day after the launch date

Assuming Bush hasn’t plunged us into nuclear war before he gets out of office, and if it comes out for 360 I’ll pick it up right away the collectors edition if it has one.
If it only comes out for PC I’ll wait a few years until I have a better computer and then pick it up off ebay.

I just know I will be playing but not sure if it is going to be on launch day. I think I am going to wait till I see screen shots or a demo and some reviews. All I got to say is it better have a deep story and a deep plot.

If it comes out around the same time as Guild Wars 2 I won't be playing it then. I'll play it eventually as I really want to see what they did, but GW2 comes first. :)
P.S. I'm a GW fan. :lmao:

HEHE. This could be a funny thread. :D
I was just kind of thinking how, on the very day of release, each of us will most definitely experience a dramatic change in our lifestyle.
You know, we are all going to perform some form of "personal ritual" for the safe receipt of DX3, playing the game and, finally, ending the game. Yeah?
Yup, this life-changing scenario could be broken down into 3 basic scenarios - a beginning, a centre and an end.
So, time to expose exactly what your master-plan of action is going to be for DX3 release day... and thereafter. :)
1. The Day of Release:
How will you prepare yourself for launch day?
Will you be the first to get in the nearest shop at opening time, 8/9.00am on the dot? Maybe you're even planning to prepare a packed breakfast and flask of hot coffee and will be sleeping in your car overnight? Do you intend to be in front of the queue at the counter to ensure you get a copy before stocks run out? Or maybe you are happy to get to the store at your leisure, confident that there will be plenty of games left on the shelf. (If the game does sell out by the time you get there, please don't take it out on the staff! LOL).
Or maybe you intend to pre-order? Hopefully saving yourself some money against the retail price in most high street shops.
Perhaps you are reluctant to pre-order because you are not prepared to wait those inevitable few days or week before you can "physically" get your hands on it?
Yikes, seriously, you don't want any of us to get the game before you do!!! LOL.
On the other hand, maybe you won't actually order the game at all - not until you have read some more gamer reviews after release? Cool, calm and collected - that's you. No way are you going to panic about getting the game or get over-excited and act out of character, hehe.
2. Playing the game:
How many hours of the day are you hoping to dedicate to immersing yourself into DX3?
What about other committments? You know, family and friends, hehe. Life in general. Employment even! Surely, you are not contemplating ringing up your boss and telling him you've come down with some sort of infectious virus which means at least a week or two off work? (I dare you! LMAO).
Is there any possibility that you will be locking yourself away from all humanity in an attempt to remain undisturbed in every possible way?
Perhaps that may mean that divorce proceedings could be on the horizon? Do you even care? LOL.
3. Finish of game:
What about when the adventure is all over? Even allowing for different endings, you've still played them all - of course!
How will you feel? Satisfied hopefully, because DX3 was awesome and didn't disappoint.
But what about when its all over really? Will you feel Empty? Bored? Depressed?
Maybe you will have another new game ready to play, set in reserve for the very reason of not feeling sad that DX3 has come and gone, in what seems 'so soon'.
How the heck are you going to cope with the fading afterglow? :nut:
Do you intend to write up a fair and factual review on the game? Will you be honest in your critique - good and bad?
***
Please share with us how numbers 1, 2 and 3 relate to you.
Have fun everyone! Looking forward to reading the answers, hehe. :D

1: I will don my leather trenchcoat, black jeans, steel toecaps, cowboy hat if necessary, and generally make myself appear as someone you want to be away from, through either intimidation or ridicule. I will go to my local retailer, purchase the best form they have in stock, hopefully a limited edition or similar, and will immediately return home for fear of damaging my prize.
2: I will blitz it. It worked for mass effect, 2 nights, no sleep, pure playing. Sure I lost touch with reality by the second day but it was still an... Interesting state of mind to be in. I will stay up all night, refusing to leave it. When forced to leave it, I will spend all my time planning and reflecting on its awesomeness.
3: I will play through it again. There has to have been something I missed, some passing dialogue perhaps, or an area I never finished scouting. Only when I hear of an alternative, or start to find the gamem samey will I stop. Then, I will check the rest of my things to do before I die list and contemplate a happy death.
But before all that I will continue this very annoying search for the original YMCA video. Youtube has it NOWHERE!

1. I'll wait a couple of weeks, actually, just to see if there won't be a Collector's Edition (around here, the "normal" versions arrive first, like nearly a month first :( ).
2. I will wake up an hour earlier than usual, do the usual morning routines, and then play a bit before going to work. :D
Then, after dinner, I'll turn off my cellphone, shut out all the lights, and play the game undisturbed. Wouldn't be the first time, anyway...
3. After conclusion (all of them), I'll let it rest on the hard-drive for a year or so, patiently waiting for mods or news about any. :)

Guess because the other thread was kind of old now and hadn't had too many replies before it died down the board.

EDIT: 0. Pre-Release:
I am going to wait until about two weeks before the game release to buy my new system which I am already saving up for. That way i can have the best possible specs for perfect smoothness and general happiness. I shall also not have anything else on my drive except windows, latest drivers for everything and the latest service pack. Perfection is mandatory.
1. The Day of Release:
I am not sure as to whether I will pre-order Deus Ex 3 or go to the shops on release day. I think the best bet will be to do both. That way I can be absolutely sure that I get the game as soon as humanly possible. On the other hand, I am a universal constructor and not a human, so maybe I will just make my own one right now. The point is, that I will do everything I can except sell my body (maybe just parts of it) to get Deus Ex as soon as possible.
2. Playing the game:
You see, now this is where I have a slight problem. I have a girlfriend, So I will need to sit her down and explain to her how much this means to me and that it is very important that i take a few days to do this. For the good of our relationship. Or, I can try and indoctrinate her into liking Deus Ex (or just computer games that aren't peggle) so then we can sit and play it together.... aaaaw. (Three foumites just threw up slightly in their mouths). I dont care actually, so long as I'm playing it. I can switch environmental effects off. And by that, I mean, people around me :D
3. Finish of game:
I will try and reconcile with my girlfriend. :p
.......
Then I will play it again and start the whole process over

Good point there. :)
So, you are hoping (like me) that DX3 will include a SDK so that the community can make fan missions, right?
I certainly hope that will be the case. The Thief game community has achieved cult status and continuum because of the dedicated mission-makers. To them, I will be eternally grateful.

It's only natural that Eidos releases a SDK for DX3, as most studios have been doing, even if not with release, then a year or two later, at the most. I just hope that the fanbase can pester them enough to produce the SDK. :D

General Pre-release:
-Get a job, some steady income
-Buy new PC
-Decorate my new bedroom with Deus Ex stuff (printing out stuff on paper then using sticky-back laminating stuff, like you use to cover schoolbooks =P)
-When a date has been confirmed, telephone one of my local game stores and ask them if they will have the game in stock exactly on the day of release.
Night before release:
-Make a special effort to go to bed at 12AM
-Set alarm clock for 9AM
-Try very hard to get some decent sleep, maybe read until i doze off (Conditions have to be perfect for me to play this game)
Release Day:
-Get up
-Go to a store (preferably Gamestation) and buy DX3, making efforts to try and spark up a conversation with the friendly gamers behind the counter about how I've have been anticipating this game so much, and that the original is amazing. Hope that they'll agree with me.
-Go home
-Satisfy ALL apparent human needs.
-Stare at the game on my desk for about 20 minutes.
-Scream.
-Play the game.
-Complete the game.
-Scream.
....Or, I can try and indoctrinate her into liking Deus Ex (or just computer games that aren't peggle) so then we can sit and play it together.... aaaaw.
I sense a problem here. Picture this: You have to make a moral decision whether or not to kill someone - you want to kill the person, and she doesn't. You get into a heated row, which ends in you sneakily clicking the mouse button and shooting the guy straight in the face. She calls you a heartless monster and leaves. You say "No, wait, I can load my Quicksave and we can let him live! Please! Anything!"
But it's too late, DXeXodus, It's too late.

Well for me it depends whether it will be released during exam time or not.
If not, I'll:
Forget about studying, get the game on which way ever (I think I'll pre-order), play as long as I can, sleep, keep on playing if I didn't finish it on the first attempt.

I would probably do something along those lines but my GF likes DX1, so hopefully she will get it and kindly not annoy me for a week or so :P
Actually if she is busy with DX3 i might not buy it, and just go on a binge with no fear of a row when i get home :P
On the serious front though, ill probably mess with my PC to carve out any problems, then play DX1 and Complete it for the FIRST TIME!!! for the 5 years i have owned it.... Then Complete DX2, which i might do tonight as well actually.... Then use any spare time to play DXMP and read up on DX3... Then go to the shop early next morning and buy the hell outta it... Then play it till either it breaks, or i do :lmao:
Then; Buy a new copy :)
If it has MP, ill probably be on it for Years upon Years to come...

I'm not preordering it because I dont think it will be a sold-out smash hit or anything. I know plenty of my gaming friends haven't even heard of Deus Ex!
Besides, at my target, I got bioshock at 8 in the morning with no line. and the same Target I got Halo 3 at there were only about 4 or 5 people.
I have however pre-ordered Gears of War 2, for that will be one of those sold out titles

Well, yeah.. but it's the same price anyways, plus S&H of course, it's better for me anyways because I don't live close to any video game retailers and I don't have a car.

Well, Not really. If I but it, I'll just go into the store real casually and buy the first copy I see. Then I'll probably tell my friends that I have other commitments.

Mr. Pibb is inferior to Dr. Pepper. Ergo, your entire plan fails.
I'm not pre-ordering. This is what I exactly what I am doing:

12:00am, day before launch day: Eating.

I agree that Dr. Pepper is vastly superior. However, Mr. Pibb has a much longer lifespan. By that I mean, after 3 Dr. Peppers, the taste becomes a bit...strange. But 3 Pibbs, the taste is as good as ever. If you want a REAL drink, get Cheerwine. It's a cherry soda made locally here in the Southern US. It is the most incredible thing I have ever tasted and it makes my soul...better...

I’m just as hyped as MGS4 and I made alot of preparations for that game. :gamer:
I most definitely am going to head back home from UNI and move my monster gaming machine downstairs to the main living room and hook it up to the 47" Samsung HD TV. Switch my phone off and kick my mum and dad outside the house crank the 7.1 system listen to some linkin park while the install happens. Next stage would be to crack open some coronas and make some pop corn watch the opening movie. Finish messing around with the settings and press start new game followed up by a nice smoke. :naughty:
After i have dominated the game so much that there is smoke coming from the optical drive i will put a tick next to number 9* in my ten things to do before i die list.

Either way, I'll probably give the robot maid the keys to my fully restored fifth-generation Camaro and have her pick up a copy for me. Driving is so...early twenty-first century, and besides, they still haven't reinstated my license for that minor restricted airspace violation back in '22.
Then I figure I'll sit down in the hoverchair with the grandkids (presuming the Tylenol Extra-Strength Stem Cells have taken care of my rheumatoid arthritis), grab the motion-sensitive input devices, call a bunch of friends over, order in some Depends and Ensure, and Deux Ex my way to better health and greater social consciousness.

-Finally I'll install and play the game
Can anyone get a zoom in on what is on the computer screens?
Yeah, someone working for CSI here? :p

That picture's already pretty bad...but if I had to guess I'd say on the near one you're looking at an untextured elevator shaft.

I see
Think we'll get elevator music?
I am wondering who is the second character in the poster near the window? It looks like a female character. Anna maybe... :hmm:

I'll likely curse consoles because they'll get it before the PC version is out... Stupid piracy!

The release date will be announced during the next summer.
is there any translation of this article? "De l'ete 2010" - i understood but that is all :D
So, I guess... DX3 will be released in IVQ of 2010 or even 1st Q of 2011... pretty sad, but i like that: max quality and no rush.
And, well... next year, when it'll be released, i'll order "Deus Ex 3 Collection Box" whatever it cost, bring it home, put it infront of the monitor and... whouldn't play it. Just staring it for hours, days and months... maybe for years (=

Yeah, I'm with you on that one.
At least the critique will be based on real experience and not just our personal speculation. :thumb:
:nut: I'm blown away. This is the first unbiased post on the subject of quality you have made thus far. I'm impressed... and they say people can't change.... GJ!

So what are you guys going to do on launch day, 1 year roughly 1 year and a half from now?1. Buy it.
2. Install it.
3. Play it.
4. [Optional] Probably post a hateful thread here.

I will dance around a giant pie which will slowly burn the packaging until it gets to the box i will then proceed to insert the disk to my selected peice of hardware whilst doing an American Indian tribal dance. Naked.

:hmm:
Well, who am I to come between a man and his pie?
I actually think I'll take off some work for it!
I loved DX1 and DX2 and played through both many many times. (obviously it was easier to make it through DX2 as it was half the length of DX1).
I hope this game, no matter how different it is, has tons of replay value like the first 2 games. (hopefully much more than DX2 and hopefully the choices matter more than DX2. It was too easy to respec yourself later in the game)

As the days go by i'm feeling less optimistic about DX3. Just with the way the 'industry' is as with music, its pretty much the same for video games, if not more so. Definitely for me, as someone who thinks Invisible War couldn't hold a candle to the first game, i'm for sure gonna play the demo before any ritual occurs haha.
I guess having pretty low expectations of what EM can actually produce in terms of DX3 i'm looking to be pleasantly surprised.. i hope

I made up my mind about DX3-HR or whatever its name will be (based on my assumptions built on all we know about it so far.)
-I will buy it for the full price, perhaps even on the 1st day or with preorder if it will look like to be a major financial failure selling just a handful of copies.
-I will buy it after the first price drop if it will be the usual 'meh, this game is nothing special but generally okay' and won't be a success.
-But i will wait till it lands in bargain bins if it will turn out be a successful or worse, a blockbuster title.
This can change only if EM shows something really surprising in the subsequent months, something that suggests that this game will be able to provide similar experience to DX, or if they drop the DX name altogether and release the game as a new title. But I highly doubt any of this will happen.

Another government worker! They are coming out of the woodworks tonight :D Kidding of course and I understand your reasoning. Me personally... I'm hoping that titles like Deus Ex (2001) have more commercial success in the future. Not because of a shift in mentality but because of greater awareness. I can't tell you how many times I've heard "Deus What?"

Wait, what? You're not "fighting the man" there, you're shooting yourself in the foot by avoiding a chance to check it out for yourself based on it's popularity.

1. I'm gonna read every review that will be available in the net
2. I'm gonna download the demo (if released)
3. If it will be even a little similar to first part - i'm gonna order a collector's edition.
4. Obviously, I'm not gonna wait until they deliver it to me - gonna download from torrents as well. And if original game will have stupid anti-pirate protection - ill just keep playing on a pirate version with original in my cupboard ;)

That's ridiculous.
Could be indeed. It's not quite rational. But that's the way i feel i should go because i don't want to support a game if it will be successful, but won't be a(n imo) proper sequel/prequel. On the other hand, i have some strange love towards crappy (and underdog) videogames (perhaps that's the reason why i also love IW - actually i can't decide if its so crap or so good for me to like it), and i was anticipating this game long enough to justify the first day purchase in the case it sucks.

Not exactly what i said. As i still plan to check out every available info/media about DX3 (and the possible demo) if i see it's worthy to its name, i'll buy it regardless to anything else. Popularity measuring will only come when it's just another usual game titled DX. I just think that this will be the case. (Always the pessimist.)
Oh, and i don't want to fight anybody, really. In this regard, I'm indifferent to EM, i'm only interested in their game.

TRUE STORY. I remember the demo was getting me addicted x³. Thats how it started. It was running so bad on my pc but all what it showed to me was a breath- taking game action and atmosphere. That was clue for me to get the game. So I hope for some cool demo level for DX3!!! Please with Gunther and Anna!!!
Other Topic:
One great chance in marketing is aiming for an adult audience. Thats definately a good opportunity to get people buy the game which are barely interested in games due to lack of intriguing content, quality of storyline.
For instance, if it could get some attention on german- french tv station arte, it could rise interest in adult and intellectual consumers both on german and french market.
My Rital btw...I'd dress ski cloths to not freeze in winternight, take a big pot with black tea, start playing!

My ritual for when the game is released?
scenario a) Wait to see if everyone is saying how great the game is after a few days of release, then go to my local game shop which is about 5 mins away, buy the game, go home and install it, drop my girlfriend off at her parents, unplug my phone, switch off my mobile, cut the wire to my doorbell, close the curtains... a week later resume normal life.
scenario b) Wake up to the first user reviews of the game, hear how bad it is and cry...
Before you call me cynical I'm guessing scenario a will be the closest to what actually happens (fingers crossed anyway)
I will definitely be taking a day off work! :) And I love my job.

As I'd be getting the PC version (non-returnable), I shall have to wait for all three of my top review sights (Gamespot, IGN and GameTrailers.com) to make some judgment upon it before I purchase.
I do have high hopes that Eidos Montréal is making a great game, but frankly, they have yet to prove themselves capable of anything.
On the other hand, once the news onslaught begins, and I get to see how the game is shaping up, if the material released is powerful enough, I may not need to wait for full reviews.
