View Full Version : Does TR have a special something?
Just out of curiosity - since I have recently lost all interest in TR and level editing...
The amount of work that some of you spend on levels and outfits is phenomenal! Do you realise that if you channeled that work and determination into an area such as C++ programming and DirectX, that you could very possibly be able to code your own 3d game?
What is it that keeps many of you all here? TR is great for fun, but the amount of customization that is being attempted is ludicrous in places! Why not get down to the nitty-gritty and make something new?
I come to my topic - Does TR have a special something? Because I must have missed it...

One reason that I keep level editing is that it gives me satisfaction for making others happy.

Learning programming takes time, whereas creating new textures, outfits, etc. doesn't. That doesn't mean that all the TR stuff isn't great and spectacular, I'm just comparing the two. Most people don't have the need to learn programming because we have something easier but very effective. Hoowah!
just passin' through, tenchen - I still have the forum bookmarked.

The thing that keeps ppl with the LE is, the possibilities are mainly endless! You can create any type of level, thats what keeps us hooked.

Sometimes I get tyred of TRLE but when I finish a level, publish it and get good critics it's very satisfactory.

You can't compare programming to level editing:
When you programm something it's very different, i mean of course it's sometimes a little challenge that makes me working on a problem that shall be solved by a computer software. But to basically say it: Every "fool" can be a programmer. Of course there are the very good programmers out there and some that are not that good. But in the hierachy of software-engineering or IT generally the programmer is on the lowest level, just like the mayor in the whole hierachy of the politic system. But when creating something like a level there must be something more than just the ability to think logical (which you should have as a programmer). The creative part of you is addressed! So you can't really compare these two things. Another point is that if i come home from 8 hours of java programming i don't say "I'M SO BORED, LETS CREATE A NEW ENGINE". Moreover in a software-engineering project the implementing itself makes only about 15% of the whole project time.

i disagree with ya rotc.
I do design and I hate programming.
Tomb Raider level editor gives me a medium to design. To show my creativity (if i have). And for people to satisfy, to enjoy including me.
Like using 3D programs, I don't make a new program everytime I've created an artwork do i? Tr levels to me are some interactive 3D artworks! And I enjoyed creating that.

I have to disagree with that - I am a complete and utter fool but I still don't know how to program. :D
This isn't about whether programming a tool requires more skill than using it. Both can't live without the other. As my fictitious great Grandmother said to me on her dying bed:
"A program has no purpose if it will not be used to create. A creation cannot exist if it has no tool to create it with."
She died later that day - so, out of respect for her, let us never forget her last words. :p

Part of the answer was given a fortnight ago by Storm Chaser on this forum :
"I think the level editor will live on. AOD will be another game to play and when I finish it then it will go on the shelf with all the other games and ocasionally come out to play. TRLE on the other hand lets me be creative. Its the best value "game" I have ever had - now in use for at least a year. "
However, there is a very positive issue in your thread :
"…you could very possibly be able to code your own 3d game? … Why not get down to the nitty-gritty and make something new?"
Will somebody catch this ball ? ;) ;)

I am still here because certain memory ingrams induce a multiphasic transmographic cataclysm within my cortical stimulator, thus causing total hysteresis that creates a chain reaction leading to degenerative influx. ;)

I think I speak for everyone here when I ask HUH? :D
hehe Anyways,
People grow out of things. When I was younger I never thought I would grow out of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles but well, things change. Maybe we will all lose interest. Who knows? But I plan to be here for a looooong time ;)

ROTC, TR does have a special something, and so does every other level editor out there!
We're still doing it after 2 years, and I'm gonna keep going with it!
It's a fun, easy to use, self-explanatory level editor, so what?
Does that mean we quit and start over again? Just when I'm starting to get really good with this? NO!
Does that mean I'll never try another game editor in my life? NO!
Does that mean I'll be in this forum till I'm 83? NO!
It means that it's much more fun to continue something you're doing for a long while, then spend as much time as it takes to get good, then quit and start over. It's not worth it!
I don't just make levels, I'm expanding my horizons, making audio, pictures, webpages, and levels on my PC, I don't just level-edit. My computer teacher is very impressed with everything I do, and I don't think I need to leave all this behind.
I don't want to get down to the nitty-gritty till I lose all interest in this "clean" stuff. The LE will live on, past AOD, and trying to get people to leave the TR engine behind is insane, it's just not happening at this point.
Furthermore, I don't have the money to buy C++ at this time, and the TR Level Editor only cost me $20! And it's FREE NOW!!!
I know I can probably do something like that after time, but right now I'm not finished with my TRLE game.
I have many many levels planned, and I hope that most of them will be recognized. I'm not giving up on any one of them ;)
I have said all I have to say, and I hope you understood me ;)

I hope this help you, it's some questions that Piega (René) answered at:
http://www.mprager.de
"(...)
Matthias: “Have you ever been approached by Eidos with an offer to work for them?
René: “No, what the hell are they waiting for ;o). I think they don´t look on forums and websites looking at screenshots to pick out a good level designer. Who wants to become a real designer will find the way to fill out letter of application. I think I will definitely try that some day.
Matthias: “What makes TR so special in your view, (...)?”
(...) The look, the music, the puzzles. I still feel the intensity when I look back on the Venice levels. The cut scenes and the FMV's who made Lara a real character. With the editor a dream has come true to give Lara an environment that you decide.
(...)"
CU! :)

LOL Driber :D
For me, it's not just about the game itself. I've always had a love of ancient history, archaeology and adored the Indiana Jones films. Since I like to be independant and quite outspoken, I really admire Lara and the personality she portrays....strong, sassy, brave and does something that I've always dreamed of doing. The raiding and the history behind levels will always fascinate me. Also, the level editor and other tools like Strpix and TRWest let my heroine have a change of clothes! I've really come on in leaps and bounds in creative design (2d and 3d graphics), it's given me a lot of confidence.
I think Stormchaser is right.... it's not just about playing, it's about creating. That is invaluble in itself, because you grow and learn when you create, you keep your mind active.
