View Full Version : Exclusive Pacific Screenshots
Hey guys... I bagged these three screenshots exclusively for you. I've handed them over to our good friends Nemesis and Arrow from bsmcommunity.net (http://www.bsmcommunity.net/index.php).
Check them out here (http://www.bsmcommunity.net/modules.php?name=gallery2&g2_itemId=69).

i agree, that always annoyed me in BSM that when you dropped depth charges all you saw was a few bubbles coming to the surface, not the big explosion that happened in real life, hopefully depth charges will have a similar effect to that that big underwater explosion in the screenshot.

Mines too should be big and powerful. I saw some footage once of a cargo ship I think off the coast of some place and hit a mine and the blast was taller than the buildings! You should also be able to lay and clear mines.

If they're going to start slaughtering ships with more power than BSM-era torpedoes, then they ought to be seen. IMO I wouldn't bother with mines, 'cause then it just starts eating up slots. They would be nice in places like the harbour assaults, but throwing mines on an open sea map like Coral seems pretty pointless.

Trust me I am SURE that they will only put mines near islands....they wouldn't do that in coral sea.:rasp: I don't see how mines would eat up slots though.

i agree, they wouldn't be too useful in the middle of the ocean.
maybe he meant that the ships and planes used to launch them would use up slots for different ships or planes, i think they would be worth it (just mine laying planes, if i was launching from a shipyard i wouldn't launch a mine layer) think of what mines could do in Sibuyan, if you are the Americans you could take your ships and run to your airfield, meanwhile the airfield is launching planes to make a mine field at the entrance, he would leave a small gap to let allied ships in and once they are all there he would fill in the gap, then the Japanese fleet comes and runs right into your mines while you just sit and watch them go to the bottom

Mines don't work in the open ocean. They're tethered to a base thing that anchors them to the bottom. If the water is thousands of feet deep, it doesn't work.

that and in the middle of the ocean there are no choke points, you would have to guess where your enemy is going to be and even if you had a pretty good idea of where they would be there would be a good chance that you would be off by a little bit and they will just miss it
P.S. not all mines were tethered, there were some drift mines that just floated there (so they would work in open ocean), although these had been banned after WWI (but they were still occasionally used in WWII)

i agree,
although, there may be a solution for that, what if you had a limited number of mines, that would stop people from turning the entire map into a minefield, also i would hope that only mine layers and planes could lay mines

Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory tried that. You'd be surprised at the number of people who'd totally mine-spam. Just get rid of mines entirely.

but if you only had a small number of mines they wouldn't be able to do that, when i said limit the number of mines i was thinking of limiting it to something like 20 or 30, just enough to make a small minefield

I hope they do add mines. If there was a limit on the number of mines and where they could be deployed then it would be a great new part of the game. They should however be visible on the map when you have a unit within a certain range and there should be a way to clear them. Mine layers should have limited numbers of mines so so that while there might only be thirty allowed at a time there might only be one hundred and twenty available.

Wow, nice; I like the attention to detail. :) Do you have a few sounds and music files to share with us - gunfire, torpedo launches, etc.?
By the way I've played through the Pearl Habor event in BS:M and I like it - good storyline.

Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory has the mine-cap set to 10 and it's still too much. Just get rid of the damn mines before they make the game stupid.

i am guessing that in Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory, when you stepped on a mine it would kill you. if that was the case, i understand how 10 mines would be too much. i am thinking that in BSP the damage a mine would do would be similar to a torp, so it would take a bunch of mines hitting a ship to kill it.

Actually, in Wolfenstein: ET, depending on the server you can take two or three mines. Two or three torpedoes hitting a ship would be worth an entire squadron of torpedo bombers, or merely one less of a submarine strike. >.>

Mines would add a lot of diffrent game play strategies. If you were limited to the number of mines you could deploy. I think that would be a very cool addition to the game. It would add more depth to the game for sure.
princecaspian4
03-06-2008, 03:50 PM
mines would be more useful for their physiological value, they may not do too much damage to a ship, but by making a minefield you are essentially making a barrier that the enemy will probably want to avoid, so he will go around, or if there is no way around he would probably want to go through it in a line so that only the lead ship takes damage, either way it would help you, even if he goes around and none of his ships take damage it still helps you because you have slowed him down giving you time to prepare

As mentioned in the other thread, I don't think they should be included because it'll turn the game really boring. Most battles are fast-paced and you're supposed to be jumping from ship to ship really quickly. The last thing I want to do is worry about laying a crapload of mines when a good battleship will do the job just as good. And to be blunt, minesweeping is damn BORING.
EDIT: Original quote by Kai Robin
the thought of mines playing a "prominent" role in the game is ridiculous :rasp:
In a given battle often you are multi-tasking, battle is chaotic and you need to pay attention. It would be redundant to try to add a "4th" layer of mines on top of that. In addition, MINE SWEEPING!?? for the love of bob people WHO WOULD CARE TO PLAY BSM SO THEY CAN SWEEP SOME FRIGGIN MINES!?!?!"
I mean seriously, I don't know about you, but I load up BSM thinking "wow, how awesome its gonna be dueling with submarines, launching aerial assaults and chugging out artillery rounds from my BB's, " not "gee, I can't wait to start sweeping mines!" Seriously, this is a 2 paragraph rant on how uber-not fun it would be too incorporate mines and minesweeping as a standard part o the game.

I agree let the mines be pre-placed like fortresses. And you know some noob is just going to go spend all his effort laying a field in the middle of nowhere insisting that it will stop any ship not knowing the Yamato is parked outside his ship yard. :nut: And no minesweepers just put on full water repair, grit your teeth and steam on. As David Fargott said in the Civil War "Damn the torpedoes full speed ahead!" (Note mines were called torpedoes than.

Yes, maybe some launched from a submarine line in 1914 Shells of Fury. The subs in there can carry 18 of them and they are floaters. Adds to the game I think.

Those go on a list things that we need, apart from map list since I doubt that the Devs have finished building the maps, let alone which ones are good enough.
Questions for the Developers thread
New screenshots
Release date
List of new units (if they have decided that there will be 21 new units then they know what these units will be)
Information on the new multiplayer modes.
Confirmation of what kind of DLC we will get (ie will it be new maps, new units or both)
Confirmation of whether the devs are still listening to suggestions or if they have finalised the features in the game.
Lastly, are we getting a map editor or not.
All these things need addressing sooner rather than later so Keir, I know your busy, but if you read this can you provide answers to as many of these questions as possible.
