Quite a few people play it online still. Including myself (talking Xbox 360 here).

I'd say on a good day a little over a hundred people could be on, with full 8vs8 servers.

So don't worry, plenty of online action still going on. But I reccommend you play single player before tempting online, otherwise you're gonna get in some trouble when your ships start taking shells outta nowhere.
