Hello all
System:
Athlon 2800 XP running at 2085 MHz, XP Pro sp2, Radeon 9600XT 256 Mb ram with latest drivers, 1Gb system Ram, 80Gb Maxtor 6Y080P0 master hdd 52.1Gb free, 250Gb Maxtor 7L250R0 secondary hdd 221 Gb free, DirectX 9c

I have recently started buying 'retro' games from a few years ago, ie. Painkiller, Max Payne, Chrome, Far Cry, Deus Ex, Deus Ex IW.
I have no problems with any of these except DX:IW.
Started off installed direct from dvd. No patches applied, already patched to 1.2 on dvd. Installed with and without antivirus and all startup software running, complete uninstall between, installed using installation watcher, all traces of game definitely gone. Try to run, get black screen, then black window top left of screen, window disappears, game doesnt run, explorer crashes, start menu programs duplicated.
Contacted Eidos who suggested updating graphics drivers. Did this but made no difference.
I have formatted my hdd and did a completely fresh reinstall of XP SP2,
all Microsoft updates applied, hdd defragged, registry cleaned up, checked for viruses, malware, rootkits etc. Everything was negative, no problems at all. This was not for DX:IW but other reasons.
I then downloaded the latest drivers for my graphics card, file 8-1_xp32_dd_ccc_wdm_enu_57717.exe posted to the ATI website on Jan 16 2008. I switched off all start up items on my pc using msconfig, rebooted, installed the brand new drivers file then installed DeusEx2 - Invisible War. Tried to run, get black screen, then black window top left of screen, window disappears, game doesnt run, explorer crashes, start menu programs duplicated.

Testing Direct3D gives the following results :
Direct3D 7 test results:
Failure at step 8 (Creating 3D Device):
HRESULT = 0x80004005 (Generic failure)
Direct3D 8 test results:
Failure at step 8 (Creating 3D Device):
HRESULT = 0x8876086c (error code)
Direct3D 9 test results:
Failure at step 8 (Creating 3D Device):
HRESULT = 0x8876086c (error code)

Removing new drivers and reinstalling earlier ones fixed this Direct3D problem and now I could run the game as far as Start Game, ie. game starts, plays intro, allows selecting character appearance. Screen then goes black and I could only get out by a complete reboot. I then tried the Omega drivers for my card, but these made no difference. I am now using the latest Radeon drivers together with the hotfix to sort out the Direct3D issues, but still get black screen and have to reboot.
During one of the many attempts of installing, uninstalling and trying to run the game I had a Viktoria error, no sign of it since. This said that the following files were missing :

C:\Program Files\Deus Ex - Invisible War\System\DX2Main.PDB
Unreal DLLs

I assume that these files should be copied to my pc as part of the installation. I have one or two of these files but with a .dcu or .int extension.
Could this be the cause of my problems ? If so why are they not installed. I have tried to open the .cab files on the dvd with no success. Are they a different format to the normal .cab files or is my dvd (bought brand new and shrinkwrapped) at fault.
Sorry for long post but am at wits end.
Can post dxdiag output if necessary, dont want to do it with this post, it is long enough already :-(
