I know there is a thread about this already but I am still very confused. I also checked the FAQs but the link didn't work.

I have windows XP on my computer and I bought TR1 ages ago (offline). Will I be able to install it if I download one of those 'patch' things? I tried to download one and it seemed to be working at first but it didn't finish. Why is this?

Thanks xxx

It's okay now. I installed it. It keeps 'blacking out' though. The whole screen will go blank and then my computer will restart itself.

Firstly remove your tombraider folder.

Then download and install VDMsound, which you will find here: http://www.glidos.net/install.html?lang=en#instvdms.

Then you can install TR1 using the installer.

Go to your first hard drive (which is C by default) and delete the folder "TOMBRAID".

Welcome to the forums Esperanca, I hope you enjoy your stay. We also chat over at the commuity forum here http://forums.eidosgames.com/forumdisplay.php?f=72.

I did that and the same things keep happening. The sound works but it still shuts down and a message on my computer said ''system recovered from a serious error' or something like that.

Thanks for the welcome! I'll take a look at link. :p

Try VDos32, you will find the relevant links in this thread; http://forums.eidosgames.com/showthread.php?t=73191.

I've never needed to use VDos32 its mainly aimed at vista, but the posts from Glidos says it will work for XP,

Hi Esperanca, welcome to the forum. :)

Sorry to hear you're having trouble with TR1 & XP. I've got a solution that should get it working - but thank humbug for it though :D. I posted this a while back and, had she not linked it in another thread, I would never have found it again...

Here's the other solution however, and I can personally vouch for it because this is how I got TR1 running perfectly on my XP machine at 1024x768 resolution with full PC sound.

- First off, uninstall and remove Tomb Raider 1 from your PC completely (that's the "TOMBRAID" folder humbug mentioned, and remove any other related apps you might've used like Glidos).

- Go to Tomb Raider HUB (http://www.tombraiderhub.com/faq/tr1.html) and download both 'VDMSound V2.10' and the 'Advanced Tomb Raider Installer'.

- Run and install VDMSound first. This little bit of software prepares your XP PC to 'emulate' all the sound featured in TR1 once you install it. There's full step-by-step instructions on how to install VDMSound on the same page at Tomb Raider HUB listed under "Installing the Game".

Once you're done installing that...

- With your Tomb Raider 1 CD placed in your first drive (if you have more than one), start the Advanced Tomb Raider Installer and follow the instructions at Tomb Raider HUB to install the game.

And that's it :)

If you want to play the game using a USB pad, you might want to download the JoyToKey software (also at Tomb Raider HUB) as TR1 doesn't support USB pads. It's a simple bit of kit that runs in the background and translates your pad's input into keystrokes.

Hi Spong. :) Thank you for the advice. I followed those steps but it still does the same thing. The 'Windows error report' said that the problem was caused by the ATI graphics driver. I'm confused.

Thanks for the reply though!

D'oh. ATI graphics cards :mad2:.
I have an NVidia card, never given me any problems concerning TR games.
Sorry. I can't help you there I'm afraid.

Oh yes it does. I'm the author. Tell me what goes wrong, and I'll tell you how to fix it.

One thing: use the archive suggested on VDos32's home page to install TR1.
