View Full Version : IW Freeze With Looping Sound

I had recently purchased the Deus Ex package off of STEAM.

I ran through the first one with very little hickups.

In IW, at the character selection screen, when I hit OK (the check mark), a black screen appears, and the sound loops. I can't do anything and have to manually shut down my PC.

System Specs:

AMD X2 4800+
4x 1GB Kingston HyperX
GeForce 7950GT KO Superclocked
A8N SLI-Deluxe Mobo
XP64

(Yes, all of my drivers are up to date, and so is Windows.)

Try this suggestion from the Eidos solution center for Thief III:

It is very likely that you have a Dual Core processor, such as an AMD Athlon 64 X2 or an Intel Pentium "D" which is the cause of the problem. The solution is to set Thief III to use only one core. This can be accomplished by entering the Processes tab of the Task Manager when the game is running, right clicking each of the Thief III-releated processes (T3Main.exe, T3.exe), selecting "Affinity" and unchecking one of the CPUs.

Same procedure, just look for the Deus Ex IW processes.

I got not dual core but intel pentium 4 with hyperthreading technology, do i need to just have it run on one cpu. I get crashes too. Got nvidia driver 94.24 whql. Thats the new driver with gpu heat level indicator.

I tried playing with the affinity, and even setting priority. I have tried playing with the video settings in game, but that hasn't helped fix my problem either. I haven't tried every possible combination, but I don't feel like spending a few more hours trying something that may not work. If there's some settings that people are using that seem to work a little better, let me know, I'll give those a shot.

If you have a single core CPU, I doubt there's even an option to play with the affinity. The driver you have seems a little old, unless you have an old video card. The latest driver that I have is 162.18.

I didn't have enough information to find the exact sound driver, but it appears the last drivers were released in July 2006, so your driver may be out of date.

There's also a more recent video driver (September 28, 2007).

Updating this might help.

I did manage to get the game to work.

First thing to note is that ASUS did not have any updated audio drivers for my motherboard. I did however try to reinstall them.

I also upgraded my graphics drivers.

However, I think what actually fixed it was installing the dual core optimizer from AMD, which I should have tried in the first place. The reason I didn't try it was because I've often found that installing things like that to fix one game can break all of the other games I have. Fortunately, this was not the case.
