Hi all,

It's take until now today to connect to Tesco net. I initially got the error message 676 'The phone line is in use'. I checked the line and modem and even switched phones, restarted and so on but after dial-up began the error code appeared and it stopped dial-up. I wasn't on late last night as I had an early night, the problem started this morning.

I checked my settings, all seemed to be in order so that errant (lovely) brother of mine anwsered my distress text at work and made some suggestions bless him (he knows I get a panic on when I can't get online to do my little bits and pieces bearing in mind I run all of my utility bills and such online - the one disadvantage when you can't get connected!).

I switched off again and changed a few little settings as a test but it dialed up fully only to then bin me off again with another error message about username and password. That was all fine so I am assuming it was a fault with Tesco? Thankfully I managed to blag a lo-call rate number for Tesco once and so I could have got on to their tech line as a last resort.

Anyway I decided to post here incase I get binned again as others will know who to tell if I go offline for ages (my Cafe if I get binned before I get a chance to post this!). They can then route to other sites I manage and tell them for me if they'd be so kind (Dukem will know what to do!).

Hopefully I'll stay on long enough to post there in a second.

Thanks. Does anyone else ever experience these faults (or used to) when on dial up specifically?

Lo :o

I had the same error message when I was on free dial-up.

It basically means the server you're trying to connect to is busy, so another words, it's Tesco's problem - not yours!

That's what I thought Lee but usually, if the remote computer is busy, you can tell in the sound of the dial-up itself and it throws back a different error code along with 'The remote computer failed to respond'.

On this occasion it started the dial-up and on the first beep it stopped, over and over again until I was running out of options! The weather is bad today and the Freeview channels are breaking up (I switched on out or boredom!) so I am wondering if thisis the cause and that their computer was down as I didn't have to re-enter my username or password and nor was the phoneline busy so the error messages weren't adding up with whatever the actual problem was! :nut:

Lo dont talk to me about connection probs:mad2:

for some reason or other which i just cant understand i can no longer broadcast video and audio with software because aparantly i have exceeded my bandwidth. No this does not make sense because i had 1mb, now i have 7mb and i had no problems before i upgraded:scratch:

This is why i cant broadcast video for efo radio appearances over the weekend, what a pain in the arse

I use a 4 way hub for the modem and PC camera at the same time. Now before i upgraded i never had this problem, now i have?????? :mad2:

If someone can help out i would sure apreciate it

I use windows media encoder to broadcast both

With the higher-speed bandwidth packages in place in the UK (and some other countries, the worst for it being Austrailia), download and upload limits are severely limited.

Who's your ISP?

i go through AOL and BT phoneline of course
the ISP name escapes me

er, limited? how can that be when on 1mb i had none of this?????

My IS Provider is Tesco :o

My biggest problem now is that I can't access my Hotmail - that's almost two days now. I'm awaiting a reply to my Tesco email from MSN. I contacted them last night on the wrong help page (it's all I could load) and there was a reply in tesco mail this morning with a workable link. I wrote this morning so am hoping they will respond soon.

The've probably upgraded [Hotmail] as threatened, to Windows Live Mail. I've tried every way I can to open it but 'Page cannot be displayed'. I've tried 6 ways of accessing it now. The latest being that when I signed in again to Live Messenger, the 'MSN Today' sub-page came up and I clicked on mail from there. I can see what's in my inbox but can't access it.

They maintained weeks ago that the user would not have to do anything - that it would be upgraded automatically in a hassle free way

I have received 32 e-mails today alone so if this continues I am going to a little behind schedule in no time at all :(

Oh, of course. My apologies.

And like I've said, you upgraded in speed (from a 1Mb to a 7Mb).

When people upgrade to faster connection speeds, they decrease the amount you can download/upload to prevent people downloading movies/games/software etc illegally.

That's not to say people don't download stuff on slower connections, but ISP's know it will take longer to download, say, 1Gb on a 1Mb connection than 7Mb.

It also prevents their own servers being constantly under strain from so many downloads.

If you're using AOL, then they'll be you're ISP. My advice is to contact them if you're still unsure.

(No problem Omega), Well there's no longer a problem with Tesco (dial-up) re-dialing and it isn't my ISP e-mail that's the problem, it was getting connected yesterday but I think I can spot a problem that I can solve. I left my PC running overnight to ensure I kept the 'thread' for the Internet alive.

It's just MSN that's the problem presently. I can get into Messenger but that's it and my Hotmail is my default POP3 thingy - practically all of my mail is directed there. Thank goodness I have all the sites in my faves so I can visit them (BT, Gas, electric, online shopping, etc plus forums and so on).

But that's the point of having a huge Hotmail account in the first instance so I get notified by everything there first and can then action everything at the touch of a button by following the direct, authorised link - much quicker.

I have stressed this in my response to MSN so they'd better hurry up and get their digit out of their 'arris :D

Uploading (like steaming) also counts towards your allowed bandwidth useage.

Lo - you should be fine now. Problems like that error only happen when the server is extremely busy (so busy it can't even give you the defaull "server is busy" message  ).

Well I've been through all the MSN help sections, checking all manner of settings. It just won't load at all. No reply as yet either. I ticked the SSL 2.0 setting (only the SSL 3.0 was ticked) in Internet Properties settings but that's made no difference.

There's no new updates that I don't get daily (automatic). I dunno, it can't be taking this long to work. It has to be my computer settings that are not supporting Live Hotmail and I just can't be bothered to spend another two hours reading through pages of gobbledy gook :mad2:

I've a mind to uninstall the whole useless thing - I can get my Hotmail contacts off of Messenger where they are all listed. Then totally remove everything I have - including messenger. I'll take my chances elsewhere. I'm sick to the back teeth of MSN. :(

I'm going to bed before I rant even more!

just reinstall the program. Some programs do clash, no often but it does happen

It's OK, last night before bed I decided to shut down and start up again.

I had previously kept the PC running for two days incase I lost my Tesco connection again. I did this and as soon as I pressed on my Hotmail window in Windows Messenger it opened fine. BUT, a friend on the Cafe's wasn't loading until lunchtime yesterday either. The problem was with them but maybe after I had that slight change by ticking that setting, it needed to reboot to take effect.

Well that's me chilled again.....until the next time :D

Thanks everyone for your input however :)
