View Full Version : Old codger needs help playing Legacy of Kain – Soul Reaver
I've checked previous messages and found nothing covering this topic.
Using Playstation 1. I'm in the Drowned Abbey, in the main cathedral, on top of the pillars where you can change from Spectral Plane to Material Plane. When I try to shoot from any of the pillars the shot always lands below the glass and does not break the glass. Getting orientated before Rahab shoots is a small problem but that don't matter because I can never break the glass.
Is there a way to raise the Reaver so it will shoot higher? I've even tried playing this portion of the game over to this point because there is not a lot of time to be experimenting while standing on top of the pillars before Rahab shoots Raziel off the pillar. I’ve tried using the up arrow to raise it but that don’t work either.
I'm beginning to think I have two choices, 1) Just give up on it. I hate the thought of giving up on it, 2) Ask a favor from someone to play this portion of the game for me so I can continue on. That is, if I mailed the game and memory card, would someone check it out for me? I'm not used to giving up but I've spent so much time on trying to move forward that I figure it is either a bad disk of it is me, a bad player. Of course I would pay postage both ways

So usually you can aim your telekinetic blast or normal weapon up, down, left, and right, but not in that room? It's never done that for me. Try looking at the disk first I say, there might be some scratch or something, if not, then I'd say either start over (which might work for some reason, I have no idea), or there might be a problem with the disk, because you are supposed to be able to shoot those windows out.
Or is the problem something else?

You need to use the first-person look to aim the telekinetic blast manually (I'm not sure how to do this on the playstation though, I think it's in the manual, or you can check the controls). I hope this was your problem and Zulgbrtzchllha is incorrect with his following statement:
So usually you can aim your telekinetic blast or normal weapon up, down, left, and right, but not in that room?
Thanks to both Zulgbrtzchllha and Azazel for responding to my plea for help.
The problem is, I can’t raise the Reaver to shoot the windows out. As it is now, it shoots way to low, not even close. I’ve tried using the auto aim (R1) to no avail. I’ve tried playing this part over again, that too did not work either. I’ve looked at the disk and it appears to be in excellent shape.
You’re right, if I use the arrow keys, it only turns Raz around.
Any one else have any suggestions? I know this is an old game and many of you have moved on to PS2/3 games but thanks for taking a look.

Hmm. Well, I don't use a Playstation - but do you know what the "Look Around" key is? On PC you can hold down Left Ctrl while using the arrow keys to look around. So what you usually do is: hold down the Telekinesis key, at the same time hold down the "Look Around" key. Then use the direction keys to orient your shot. Release the Telekinesis key to fire.
Playstation-1 has look around capability (L-2 & R-2) but they do not work in conjunction with any of the other keying capabilities, at least not with this game. I think what I need is someone who has played this game on PS-1. They may know the answer. Of course it could be a simple clinch. I hate giving up on the game but I don't see any other choice. I’ve spent at least 20 hours trying to work this out with no success.
Thanks for your help

You can look around and aim weapons, I didn't mention it because I just assumed that you knew. Sorry about that. All you need to do to aim your shots is to hold down L2 and R2, then press and hold Triangle, and you can aim your shot. Or maybe hold down Triangle first and then press the L2 and R2 buttons, it should work either way. It's always worked for me and I've only played it on PlayStation.
And I don't know what was so "incorrect" about what I said earlier.

Here you go, this might help you figure it out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c3Mu84Z_omM
:) Wow! What a difference that made!
Thanks for the explanation!
I can now shoot out the windows! I didn't know I had to press both L-2 & R-2 at the same time along with the up/down/right/left arrows.
At 70 years old, it’s still a sorry day I don’t learn something new.
A thanks again to every one who helped but it was Zulgbrtzchllha that saved the day.

If it's any consolation, the first time I played through Soul Reaver I had the same problem. I kept thinking "wow, if only there was a way to manually aim the projectiles, this would be a lot easier!" I think I managed to break one or two of the windows without manually aiming before I finally broke down and found a walkthrough that explicitly mentioned using the lookaround mode.

I always knew about it, but I saw other people playing the game first and learned about it there.
