View Full Version : Devs- 3 things I think need to be changed for BSM2

Since I didn't get to be on that discussion panel for gameplay improvements, here are 3 things which, in my opinion, are the major flaws of the BS:M gameplay.
The developers are always saying that they take note of what is said in the forums, so I hope this post isn't a waste of time. The least you can do is reply with your comments for my suggestions.
In no particular order of importance...
#1 Torpedo bomber AI is useless
They seem to aim for the ends of the ships, and very often miss. As far as I know, it doesn't matter where you hit the ship with a torpedo, just as long as you hit it.
True story: I sent 9 torpedo bombers against the yamato. I launched one myself, but out of the AI torpedos, SIX of them missed. I can't remember how many hit or how many planes didn't get a chance, all I know is that to miss the biggest and one of the slowest moving ships in the game with SIX torpedos, is.....upsetting.
#2 No more magical depth charge view for Destroyers
It's simply unfair. A sub at level 4 is supposed to be safe, invisible. But it's not. Some people will actually follow your sub around in a destroyer waiting until it has to surface so that they can sink it.
How can they do this? Because destroyers had glass hulls??
I understand it adds to the visual appeal of the game, to see what it is you're depth charging, to see the explosions and to see the submarine sink, etc, but it's unfair for the other person. Submarines don't have a magic periscope to let them see what's going on on the surface while at depth four. Other things which would be exciting but unrealistic and unfair would be sea monsters, aliens and nuclear missiles.
#3 Automatic damage control
I think damage control is a good feature, but it detracts from the gameplay when you're in the middle of a duel. Sometimes, if you forget to put all men on water damage, as a precaution at the start of the game, it can lose you the game.
My reasoning is this: if everything on your ship is fine, apart from the fact you've just been "holed", why should you have to manually put all men on water damage, when that is the only logical thing to do anyway?
My proposal is that one should be able to set priorities- i.e., water first, fire second, guns third, or perhaps water first, guns second, fire third. This way the AI will automatically deal with each problem based on what you think is the biggest threat to the well-being of your ship, in the middle of say, a battleship fight.
Sorry if I got a bit carried away. Obviously I'm not a developer, but if I were to come across the same things again in BS:M 2, I would at least expect your reasons why they have been kept.
Keep up the good work, and PLEASE- respond!
Thanks

Seriously bro, you gotta do something about that. don't get into such bad habits, you'll make yourself look stupid someday when it matters.

Anyways, back to the topic, my fav. idea was the damage control, but make it so we can do it manuely, and once it has taken care of the other probs, it will set back, make an option so the individual player can choose the priorities. That is all for now.(Dave post this in the BSM2 thread, I'll post a linl in there to here)

I will post these once an approprate question comes up in that forum, as we've already gone through almost 20 it'll probably be near the end when they ask "what are any additional gameplay elements you think could be fixed" or something.

Lets keep it in the air and on ( sometimes under) the water, we dont need land battles in a naval game.

Thanks for the reply.
I guess historically they often missed, but was that because they were launched from much further away? I don't know.
All I know is that on the game, if you manage to launch an aerial torpedo against a battleship, without having to "panic launch" it from too far, you'd be an idiot to miss.

Chip I have to disagree with you on this one because of the way the game's balance is designed.
In real-life every single torp hit was a potential disaster and critical to the ships well being, as in the bismarks case.
However in BSM your average BB can shrug off FOUR without to much worry, I was in surigao and got ambushed by PT boats and was hit by TWELVE TORPS near-simultaniously and I still manged to survive with like 25% health.
Because the damage ratio is so drastically different using the Bismark as an example of"ships can dodge torps" just doesn't cut it because 1 torp crippled the bismark while 1 torp won't do anything to a BB in BSM

Absolutely agree with everything you just said.
The A.I. on torp runs are useless; 99% of the time they miss their target; I always find myself crashing my torpedo bomber into the sea after launching it's torpedo so I can quickly switch to my other torp planes before the stupid A.I. launches the torps and misses the target.
