View Full Version : Glidos, TR1 - It just randomly freezes?

I am using a version of Glidos I downloaded from tombraiderchronicals.com. When I play it, it's fine. Then after a few mins, it just freezes? There's nothing I can do, and I have to switch the game off and restart. But it does the same thing.
It never did this with the old version of Glidos I used before (an unpatched one, the one I used before had the spinning logo)
Can anyone help?

Have the same problem. A few days ago it was running fine but since today it wont even start the game up. Well, it starts until the Maintitle screen and then freezes. :(
So, is there anybody who can help us?

Dark Era, have you got the same Glidos version as me?

I had the 1.28 version with no logo from croftgeneration.com. First it looked well but after a few days it froze. I'm running TR1 with VooDoo now that was included in the Advanced Installer. But i can't watch the opening movie in the beginning, i only hear the sounds and music.

Voodoo does'nt work at all with me. I have to use Glidos.
From when I first using this 1.28 version it was ok, a short while into playing it froze. It has done and still does this every time I play. :(

Well Atheist, it seems we're alone on this one.
I've removed TR1 from my pc but after a few days more trouble began. I had to format it and re-install everything again, it was a total mess. No more TR1 for me:( , i think it was VMD sound that messed it up or Voodoo.

Do you have hyperthreading enabled? if you do switch it off, I had problems with glidos untill I switched off hyperthreading. Hope this helps
I'm thinking of uninstalling my unlicenced copy (I say unlicensed I just mean I haven't paid for the unlock code because I read somewhere that it doesn't always work). Even with the logo spinning it is prone to freeze - well that was the last time I played.
I can't even get the game running now at all :(

Have you tried disabling hyperthreading in the bios, if you have it enabled that is. TR1 is excellent game shame if you can't get glidos to work. :(
Hi there humbug, :)
I'm not quite familiar with the term hyperthreading, I do apologise. Could you please explain how I should go about this?
When I last loaded TR1 (which I agree is such a great game!), I had the customary sound problem to boot and that was before it all froze up on me (regardless of whether I run it via glidos). I selected all the correct settings but then I had no savegames in my passport load menu.
I went in via Core's loading page but the next attempt meant that after selecting the sound settings and pressing either 'Test' or 'Save Settings/continue' it just froze. The prog was not responding at all.
I even wanted to play without sound if need be but it just wouldn't play ball and I am sure it's something I am doing wrong so any help would be appreciated because if TR1 comes up in the screenshot contest I have to go with the secondary theme as I just can't play it at present and my memory is like a sieve, I can never remember what steps to take to get it running, my mind goes blank!
Thanks for any help! :)

Hyperthreading is where your computer thinks you have two processers instead of one. First to find out if hyperythreading is enabled press ctrl alt and delete to get the task manager up. Next click on the performance tab, If there are two graphs for CPU Usage history then hyperthreading is enabled. I can't remember exactly how to disable hyperthreading so check if you have it first while I refresh my memory! If you do have enabled it I'll post instructions on how to disable it.
Oh thanks for the quick reply :D
I have just one graph for CPU and one for PF usage so that all looks OK
Any idea what I might try to get the TR1 disk working as I don't see any surface damage to the disk and thank you for your patience! :o

Ok, firstly TR1 wont install properly on Xp ( this is why it locks up on the test screen) so you need to download the installer wizard from glidos you will find this on the installer page, what the installer wixard does is take the info from the disc and then installs the game on your computer so you wont get the usuall install screen come up as the installer does it all itself. Another thing is don't change the directory to where the game is installed to as this creates problems too. Try that if that doesnt work I'll have another think, post your computer spec next time as well.
P.S you will need to delete your tombraider 1 folder before you install it with the installer wizard.
K thanks.
Will check the glidos site but how long a download is it - might have to wait until I go broadband as I'm on dial-up.
Specs are Windows xp pro service pack 2, 2002 edition
Pentium(R) 4 CPU
2.66 ghz
786MB RAM (Had more so this may be an inaccurate reading as I am having problems with this machine currently).
Basically quite a basic soundcard and graphics card (what it came with) - Dell Dimension 4550 is my machine.
I am budgeting £1000 for Christmas to buy a better machine with better stuff installed.
Is this the info you required? :)

Yes, your computer spec looks fine, you say you are having probs with it could be the problem if its not working properly, you will get a sweet pc for a grand though. The installer from glidos is small only took me a second to download.
Thanks humbug,
Thanks for spending time on this issue with me :o
The problems seem to be internal corruption as regards a variety of problems, not just the game concerned. Nothing has been spilled on my tower but I am constantly having to play roulette with my mice and keyboards.
I have just had to put back in a keyboard that was not working two days ago. The one I was using these past 48hrs was starting to take on a life of it's own.
If I pressed a capital G or H it was pasting in the entire contents of my last saved message  My mouse was not highlighting text but even that is working now since I put the other keyboard back in
There seems to be no other explanation other than corrupt internals and I have no idea how to fix this problem so a new PC is definitely on the cards. I'll turn this beast over to my brother who can hopefully work on it for me.
Thanks for all of your help and advice, all of which has been both absorbed and appreciated!
Lo :)

Thats ok glad to help, there is nothing worse than having computer problems that you can't sort out. :mad2: :mad2:
Yes get your bro to take a look reinstalling software as well as windows and a general pc clean can help.

Yes, he'll do a lot on that score as he is the director of a major PC place luckily for me! :D
I forgot to actually extend a warm welcome to you humbug! :o I see you just joined this month so I hope you will enjoy your time here with us!
I started a Tomb Raider screenshot contest some time ago (You will find it in the TR General Discussion board). Voting is currenly on until Sunday when the new winner sets round 9.
Perhaps you will consider joining us! I always made the rulings to include two themes. One is from a particular level and the secondary theme is a little more diverse such as 'Lara near water' or 'Lara fighting an enemy'. This ensures that players who are not in pocession of all of the games can still enter :)
We'd all love it if you considered joining in round 9! We'll make you feel very welcome!

Oh that would be simply great! :D
What was your first ever game (TR wise) that you played? Mine was TR2.
Still got a soft spot for TR2 consequently!
Sorry to Atheist for running off topic - hopefully she won't mind as she is our resident screenshot scoreboard keeper :D She'd love to see you enter!
I'm undecided on my most favourite of the TR series though, but I quite like TR Last Revelation and AoD.

My first TR game was 2 as well! My fave has to be 2 but I also love 3 and of course TR1, anniversary was excellent as well. I wasn't all that keen on AoD and never finished it, so I decided to give it another shot and started playing it today.

Cool! The furthest I got with AoD was the fight with Boaz but am now struck with the Obscurer ghost in that room with the four statues! I have over-written my previous saves so can't get much further yet in the game! :D

I vaguely (sorry rubbish spelling) remember the level, if you really get stuck check out a walkthrough!

I know what I am supposed to do but am not very adept at doing it
The idea is to crawl low as the ghost can't harm Lara much if she's crawling about. You have to stun him then quickly run to the statue before the blue, pulsating painting shifts to another ghost hehe. But I keep fluffing it up :D
