...but does anyone have like anxiety while playing the Tomb Raider games?Lol, I'm secure enough to admit when Video games startle/frighten me, but playing TRA this weekend awakend some old feelings of fear that I haven't felt since I was 14 playing the first TR 10 years ago. It's not that TR itself is Resident Evil scary, but I guess I'm saying that the spontaneous appearance of the animals and characters in the levels wig me out. TRA has added lots of foreboding music to add tension to the isolated feel I get while exploring.

There's a topic, exactly like this.
And yes, This happens with everyone. It's a good thing though! the game is/must be good!
(loved it)
I haven't yet got Anniversary but yes, I am easily startled and remember being so in various levels of all the previous games.
One of the most eerie areas is Ireland in TR Chronicles. It has ambience.
But being startled happens an awful lot when I run around a corner and a croc is there or something.
One moment that made me jump out of my seat was in TRIII, Aldwych. You run up the staircase on one of the platforms (not the broken elevator), and a wild hound appears and jumps out at you  For some reason it reminded me of that scene from American Werewolf in London - whereby that guy runs down the abandoned Tube elevator being chased by the werewolf and he falls.

Awesomeness.......glad to know I'm not alone guys. I guess it's really just the mark of a great game. The creators have done a great job over the past 10 years at creating a character the player cares about.

Yes! I'm glad I'm not the only one. The lions scare me since they don't seem to really let you know that they are coming.

Sorry no I don't suffer much from anxiety. Can't recall the last time I did if ever though. Maybe I have been de-sensatised as it were but I didn't find TR:A scary or anything like that. Mind you I found some parts frustrating, of course that was due to my lack of hand eye co-ordination, so I can only blame myself for that ;)
Still I have to admit TR:A was a great game :D

Yes! Like, I remember I could NEVER play TR3 alone, so I always asked my sister. And when she left back to her computer during the game and I was alone playing, I felt a strange feeling in the pit of my stomach. I was just so scared. But now that she's going to college in august, I've gotta learn to let that go!

You certainly aren't alone where the scare factor is concerned!
The creators have indeed done an excellent job....if only they'd sort out the darn controls :(

the ambience is is great: immersive, scary, challenging, rewarding, etc.
the controls are excellent (and well thought out) ...
just my echoing sentiment ...

Yes! Absolutely. This, above all other things, is what keeps me coming back to the Tomb Raider series. It isn't survival horror, and yet it is still more frightening than Resident Evil could hope to be. Not because things jump out at you (though they sometimes do), but because you're in places that haven't seen humans in hundreds, maybe thousands of years, and you know that anything, at any time, could come out from the shadows and attack you.
Heck, just wandering around in Anniversary in some levels (even the mansion!), I feel that vague, free-floating dread. I know, of course, that no hideous Atlantean bacon Lara is going to be around the corner, but then again... And of course, you know that sooner or later, Lara WILL come face-to-face with just that, and with other frightening things.
Sadly, I didn't get this feeling from Legend. It was still a good game, but not on the level of the first three Tomb Raiders, or Anniversary. I just hope that Legend 2 will take several pages from Anniversary's book, in terms of level design, ambience and that subtle, ever-present fear.

haha like alot of people i thought i was the only one! I'll never forget the first time i saw the Trex when i was about 8 or 9. I jumped up and ran upstairs lol. Now im getting scared in Anniversary too. Like in the level right after the Lost Valley... when those raptors pop out. or when the floor drops and you fall into a pit with wolves... AHH

The "creepy" factor is part of what makes Tomb Raider Tomb Raider. If you're not walking around pistols drawn, wondering what's around the next corner, then the game isn't done right.
Thankfully, Anniversary has recaptured this sense of dread. I'm scared---and loving it!

Welcome to the forums.
I agree, I like the scaryness of a classic Tomb Raider game and those terrifying 'jump out of your skin' moments. They should definitly make a return.

Ha ha ha... yes, yes and yes!!! I always get nervous. Sometimes I either walk away from the game to take a breather and/or at night I will shut it off and wait til' its light out again...
I know I'm such a dork!!

The Last Revelation. To be fair, I was still a teenager back then, but I remember being cautious of my steps in the first couple levels where I was walking around in pitch-black pyramids, haunted by the noises of mummies and scorpions.

Well for me there wast even 1 scary moment in anniversary....
I totally lost the solitude and yes (freakout moments at some point) when I played Legend and this Tik or Flip guy (or whatever his name was) shouted continuously in my ear about whatever he felt was annoying enough...
Luckily now whe're back to the way it's supposed to be.... Silence, some distant noises, some spikes/swords making sort of a ching-sound and suddenly........ squeek, there's a rat

Well, this may sound a bit dumb considering it's only a game. But I have a great fear of heights. Specifically of falling. I have terrible balance so I stay away from any place I can fall, especially if there's no guard railing.
So, Tomb Raider may seem like a pretty daft thing for me to play. Right? The thing is I only really get to feeling anxiety when I'm climbing something that's pretty insubstantial. Climbing outside the buildings in Japan on Legend just about put me in an anxiety attack.
Other games do that to me, too. The Jedi Knight game was pretty bad since it seems like everything is done right next to a 1000 meter drop on a 25 centimeter wide ledge. And you have to jump and do other crazy stuff (like fight).
I know it's just a game so it's silly. But my eyes tell me it's real and the fear is real. Intellectually, I know it's not real so I can function most of the time. But climbing to very high places gives me anxiety attacks. They're so bad sometimes I almost can't continue. And it's just a game. In real life, I'd be absolutely paralyzed with fear and completely unable to move.
I never finished Jedi Knight because of my fear of heights. Silly isn't it.
The only other game that ever ran shivers up my spine was Doom. The sounds of the demons and flaming heads off in the distance just ran a chill up my spine. I wasn't scared but the sounds just gave the game an atmosphere of dread. I've never felt that in any game since then.

TRNoob ~ You're not the only one. I have acrophobia (fear of heights) too.
When I first played TR3 with those PRECISION jumps by both walking and sometimes running to get to the opposite platforms or ledges in levels, it felt like I took those leaps of faith and prayed that I land safely ! Kept me so tense ! And when she misses the opposite ledge or platform, automatically I'd yell out "NOOOOO !!"
Vernavoncroy ~ I'm like that too. I eventually got paranoid in TRA and expect a sudden blitz (charge) attack from animals so most of the time she has pistols drawn. :o But then I laugh it off when she does get knocked down. :nut:

I always get nervous playing Tomb Raider too, even if I know what to expect, just because of the constant fear that a boulder will fall on my head. Those things traumatized me from day one. And my brother used to tease me by making her drown on purpose, so now I get panicky when I have to swim anywhere.
...I still move the controller when I jump, too. Not that it's ever actually helped.
TRNoob: I don't think it's silly at all. I don't have acrophobia, but sometimes I'll get anxious enough about certain sections that I can't play for a while, even though I know logically that they didn't put anything in players wouldn't be able to beat. The atmophere just gets to me sometimes, I guess. The mark of a great game, sure, but not very much fun when you can't play it.
And I almost always keep her guns out. It actually makes it easier in Anniversary, I think, due to the change in how she moves when she has them drawn. Although it feels a little less archaeologist and a little more SWAT sometimes. :D

omg I remember playing TR3 on one of the first few levels. I was in a maze type thing and it was pitch black and i was just running in silence then a loud noise sounded and a boulder dropped and killed me. i was and still am a teen but that freaked me out BAD. i needed to take a 10 minute break to recover...

Hahahaha, awesome.....you are my new favorite person. :) I was playing for about 4 hours tonight and after awhile, I'll get so "sucked" into the world of Tomb Raider that I can get sooo creeped out I'll have to turn my PC off. Lol, after Anniversary, I'm going to need some serious therapy.

well...this just proves it (although there are still some but meh) we shouldn't judge a game by...trailers and gameplays...but playing the game ourselves (don't judge a game by it's case
