OK, I just did this twice in a row to confirm that it wasn't just a one-time happening. It doesn't get you anything exciting, it's simply an amusing happenstance. I performed this on the PC version, so I don't know if it works on the PS2 or not, nor do I know if it works in the full game since I don't have it yet.
Grab the two cogs and plug them into the available spots, then climb up to the ledge above where you placed the second cog. You will see a wheel rotating with a platform on it that leads to the third lever and the area to place the third cog. Jump on the platform, then jump over to the lever. Now, staring out over the platform, you should see a large, non-moving wheel across from you.
Aim Lara so that she is pointing at the area between the large wheel and the right-hand wall, run, and leap into what should be oblivion. Instead of falling to your death, you will wind up standing on what seems to be an invisible platform, suspended in mid-air. :)

Moving around while on the invisible platform will cause Lara to fall. Amusingly enough, if you can angle her properly, you can actually land on one of the wheels below, which causes her to slide down and drop a shorter distance. She takes some damage, but she'll survive the fall if you've got more than half your health.
No, it doesn't get you anything special; it's just silly but I thought I'd share it anyways. :)
