<HR>First of all, let me make it clear that I am not a computer wiz by any stretch but, I have some friends who are and their suggestions have helped me so I thunk I would put them in a post that may help my fellow thieves. This is a post that contains a few tid-bits of info that helped Thief run better on my PC.I am running Win98 SE on a 650Mhz Athlon w/256Meg of RAM & a 20Gig Harddrive. running Thief TDP, DarkLoader 3.02 and the latest DromEd.**Hit Ctrl+Alt+Delete this will give you an idea of what is running right now on your PC. Remember, a computer can only do ONE thing at a time so the more things you have running at once, the longer the line to be exicuted is. Shorten the line, speed up the game. Hit Cancel.++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++**Be sure that you run your maintenance program regularly. Go to START - PROGRAMS - ACCESSORIES - SYSTEM TOOLS - MAINTENANCE WIZARD and set the parameters.Select: Change my maintenance settings or schedule Click OK Select: Custom, NEXT, Set your time, NEXT, Uncheck ALL, NEXT, Yes, Defrag, NEXT, Yes, Scan my hard disk, SETTINGS, Select THOROUGH and check Automatically fix errors, OK. Yes, delete, SETTINGS, (I checked everything but the 2 Win98 boxes ) OK, NEXT, FINISH.++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++**The next thing you want to do is insure that all of your systems resources are freed up to play the game. To do this, right click on "My Computer" and select "properties" then click the "Performance" tab. Look at the System Resources: The idea is to try to get it up to over 90-95%.Here's how: Go to "Start" , then Run, then type msconfig then hit "OK" Select the "Startup" tab (this is a list of everything that is loaded when you start your PC. They run in the background and consume your systems resources) you will need to leave the following items checked: System Tray LoadPowerProfile (the Rundll32.exe) there may be 2 of them, keep both. You may also need to keep the Vshwin32EXE, try with & without it. Uncheck everything else (you can go back and recheck them later if you want to) Click "OK" and restart your computer. Check your system resources, it should have freed up a bunch. Mine is at 98%.+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++**There is a handy little program called "regclean" (Can Be Found At <A HREF="http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q147/7/69.asp" TARGET=_blank>http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q147/7/69.asp</A> that helped my PC a bunch by cleaning the windows registry of corrupted or old files.+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++**Many of you probably already do this but for those who dont, you may wish to try it: Copy the entire Thief disk (including hidden files) on to your hard drive. Then install Thief twice from the hard drive, one into a "Thief" folder as usual and the other into another folder (I called it "ThiefDL" for DarkLoader). Then add your DarkLoader and FMs into the "ThiefDL" folder. It really seems to cut down on crashes and speeds things up a bit.To Do: First open your Windows Explorer then select View Folder Options View Show All Files... Click "OK" Insert your Thief Disk and stop/exit the installation. Highlight the Thief disk in your CD drive on the left hand column of the Windows Explorer. Edit Select All Edit Copy Then go to your hard drive and create a folder called "THIEFDISK" Open that folder and select Paste This should begin copying the Thief Disk from the CD to the Hard drive. When it is complete, remove the disk from the CD drive and create a folder called "ThiefDL" on your hard drive (usually under "Programs"). At this point you should begin the install process from the THIEFDISK folder. Just double click on the setup.exe and when it asks you for the "Destination folder" select "Browse" and choose the "ThiefDL" folder.After it is installed, add the DarkLoader and your FMs. No further need for the disk. If you have FMs that you are in the middle of, just copy the contents of the SAVE folder from the other Thief location to the ThiefDL SAVE folder. This works really well for those of you who DromEd. Use the ThiefDL for FMs and beta and the other Thief folder for working with the DromEd. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++I hope that those of you who use this info will benefit from it. And those of you who have other comments, info or tricks that we can use will add them to this post.Hope this helps! Cheers! <HR>Defrag your harddrive often, say once a month. Ignore the warning that your harddrive doesn't need defragging, there's a bug in the defragging tool for windows98 they missed a decimal point in the calculation. It allows you to allocate and free RAM up to 512M at the click of a button. This is super useful, seeing as how programs like to squat RAM even after you've closed them up.(Sorry, I don't have a link to FreeMem, but it's probably easy to find with a search engine. Please do not misunderstand this. RAM is still limited by the amount of RAM you have installed and the amount of RAM Windows declines to free. This is the main purpose of FreeMem Statistics to verify the results FreeMem delivers you a graphical chart of free physical RAM. Using this chart, you can verify the results of FreeMem's work. Use this statistics to optimize your other settings. For your convenience, you can display the current available amount of RAM in the title-bar so that it is always visible, even if FreeMem is minimized. Startup options After you turn on your PC, one of the heaviest usages of Windows starts. A lot of stuff has to be loaded and initialized. After that, usually a lot of RAM is wasted, because you just don't need all the features Windows loads. It is essential that you free up a good amount of RAM right before you start working. <HR>The following was thieved from a post by MsLedd:There is an excellent utility available for free called [i]"Startup Control Panel"[/], which I have found to be absolutely indispensable and couldn't live without. I'm going to get some of those utilities now.I have an off-off-topic question. I found VCACHE listed among the msconfig files. What is that? I have a problem with a VCACHE VXD causing a system crash on shutdown in Win 98. I have determined that the crash is brought on by the combination of two things: DSL software (PPP3 protocol) and the installation (but not the use) of Netscape Communicator. <HR>richnmel-Am I correct in assuming that you are copying your thief cd to HD for faster game play? Then, after the install of Thief, just copy disk 2. Mind is an orange color. <HR>Laz I've copied both disks onto the HD, completelely re-installed the game without using either CD, and when I try to start thief.............it tells me to insert the CD !! <HR>I've been to <A HREF="http://www.pcpitstop.com" TARGET=_blank>www.pcpitstop.com</A> and it seems to be a very useful site. After tweedling with some settings and haveing little luck, I went into the setup and selected "Restore Defaults" then "Optomize Settings" and saved as I exited and POW! everything is working great! All I had to do was go into the msconfig again and reset it. I also downloaded a neat utility called "Startup Cop" or something like that and it keeps programs from reinserting themselves into the startup.Thanks again MsLedd!!Cheers, B </td></tr><tr bgcolor="#DFE0E0">

Thief is running better than ever. No choppyness at all. Just out of curiosity I went there this morning because it seems to be running alot better since I used Salvages registry cleaner.I scored a 63! <IMG SRC="http://www.eidosgames.com/ubb/eek.gif"> Thats about a 50% increase over normal. I am just amazed that a few wasted registry entries can be so detrimental to your performance. If you haven't tried it out, I highly recommend it. Did not forget the second page, just ran out of time last night.

As you have noticed it can be a bit tricky getting a topic from the old UBB forum formatted (nearly) correctly when re-created in vBulletin.

Catman showed me what I was omitting....basically vBulletin adds its own page breaks when cutting and pasting the old HTML, and in order to avoid creating that giant "super-header" the Entire Topic has to be on One Line. This is no small task when re-creating multi-page archived topics, and is time-consuming.

Due to my other responsibilites (testgames testgames testgames) it will be a slow process for me to get the archives re-created here, but rest assured that I refuse to let them be lost.

Thanks for importing page 2 over here though! That helps me out.

Ah, I see now. I noticed the odd line breaks {BR /} and figured that could be the problem, but didn't think to put the old thread in one line. You can't really tell that it was one line by using quote.

That must have been terribly frustrating figuring it out. It made my head hurt :o which rarely happens with me.

Um... I've been looking at this post, and I've realized that this just isn't for Thief only, it helps with a PC overall. Well, I know it wouldn't kill my PC to try one of these (since I'm @ 70%!!!), but I need to know what they do. Do they delete stuff? Move Stuff? what? b/c I need to know b/c I need to explain to my mom what it is if she asks, and "it speeds the PC up" will not work. Sorry.

I'd say that the 3 most important tweaks are setting the swap file size, keeping the registry clean, and setting ram to be used before virtual memory, so I'll explain those.

<ol><li>Setting the swap file size prevents Windows from continuously resizing the swap file, causing hard drive use and wasted space on your hard drive. By setting the swap file to a constant size(set max and min at the same number) the computer doesn't have to recalculate the "recommended" swap file size all the time, saving many clock cycles. This does not add or remove anything to your hard drive.

Net effect: You get more processor power available, having more cycles available to do more important things. It makes your computer faster.

<li>Keeping the registry clean prevents Windows from constantly looking for files that are no longer on your computer. Due to poorly programmed programs that keep a history files in the registry, when one of those files from that "history" is removed or has it's name changed that registry key becomes invalid. Windows will keep looking for that file over and over and over even though it isn't there, regardless of whether the program that made the key is open or not. Programs that do not uninstall properly also leave invalid registry keys behind. Regclean and Regcleaner remove those invalid keys from the registry, in the unlikely case that either of them remove something that is needed they both make backups of the keys they remove which can be easily put back into the registry.

Net effect: Same as the last one, you get more processor power available, having more cycles available for more important things. It makes your computer faster.

<li>Setting physical ram to be used before the swap file is simply that, your faster hardware(RAM) is used before your slower hardware(hard drive), preventing unneeded hard drive access which slows down your computer. This is a simple process of changing one of the Windows files. This was linked to above, but the links are now dead, I will outline the process below.

Net effect: It makes your computer faster.

This is for Windows 98, the process for other versions should be similar, but may not be the same for NT based Windows.

<ol><li>Go to Start>Run and enter sysedit, hit OK.
<li>Select System.ini(this file can also be opened in Notepad).
<li>Browse to the section that says [386Enh]
<li>Go to the bottom of that section and add the line:
ConservativeSwapfileUsage=1
<li>Go to File>Save, then File>Exit</ol>

First of all, I am honored that this thread is still being viewed and hope that it will continue to be a viable resource for us all.

I am running a Dual Athlon system and have had trouble with Thief freezing. The video would just Lock-up less that a minute into the game. After posting the problem, I got a response from Leatherman advising me to get and install IMAGECFG.EXE located on the Win 2000 Server disk.

As I was unable to locate the needed IMAGECFG.EXE file which would perminently set my processor's affinity, I opted for a Temporary solution.

I found the info at

Manage processor affinity.

If you have a multi-processor system, it is possible to select which CPU(s) an application uses.
Open Task Manager and select your application on the Processes tab.
Right click the program name and choose Set Affinity.
Uncheck the processors which should not run this application.

If you try to select a service, Set Affinity will be ignored.

This will have to be done each time you start the game.

But, I don't care...

Is it normal for scandisk to take about 3-4 hours on thorough??? I mean, my patience runs thin everytime, and after it's done scanning the 1,833,000 or whatever - it begins to do a whole new set!!! I mean, it just takes forever. I fixed it so it wouldn't stop and start over like it used to (and that cut my time from 8-9 hours to 3-4 hours.) But it just seems like that is still too long.

Well, I'm (again) getting interested in improving my computer's speed. According to Salvage's latest post (which was a loooooooong time ago in this thread), I need to set the swap file size to the same. I've heard that it should be twice the size of your RAM (so no "out of memory" errors come up and you have plenty of space). I've also heard that if you right click "My Computer" and choose "Properties" and then the "Performance" tab and the the "Virutal Memory" button, you can manage it. But it says nothing about swap file size there. Is it the same thing? Sorry for pulling this thread from the dead. (I'm a poet and I know it!) (I made a rhyme, just in time!) (Baby I'm hot coz I'm rhyming a lot!) (Okay I'll stop ;) :p I'm such a dweeb!) :D

I believe virtual memory is what you want. I conducted a small experiment in this a week or so ago, actually. I have 512 MB of RAM, and set my v/m to 512 MB as well. Upon rebooting (I had to) my system ran slow and jerky like it does when I'm running two Dark Engines at once. I rebooted and reset my v/m to 1032 MB (just over twice my RAM) and everything was back to normal. Should be what you want.

Correct me if I'm wrong, anyone...

In W95-98-98SE YES!

The SWAP FILE is a mem cache on the HDD (remember "virtual"?). When your on board mem in RAM is not enough for your application, then the "Swap file"(virtual memory, also known as the "paging" file) on the HDD is used as a scratchpad memory to bolster the available memory.

When I was searching for REGCLEAN.EXE from Microsoft, I came across
different REGISTRY CLEANING/BOOSTING/REPAIR programs that are even more efficient!

http://www.majorgeeks.com/ has a whole ****load (do we still have free speech in this country or not????!!!!) of system tools to get your PC speed up to date. ON the HOMEPAGE click the LINK: "REGISTRY" and you will be bombarded with tools to help you out. The FIRST 3 programs on that list are most recommended by the site.

This is a great solution if your PC is too slow, but you don't have the time/patience to reinstall WIN XP. As a matter of fact - you may never have to do that again (to get your performance boost) as long as you keep your registry clean!

In case of a cleaning session gone wrong you can always undo all the changes the programs do to your registry - but the most recommended programs (especially the 3 top candidates) seem to be almost failsafe!

I had a good experience with #3: REGBOOST. There's a 30 days trial shareware package you can download, run & forget or purchase if you want to get extra features.

The first two posts are HTML copied from the old UBB pages. I think there is something wrong with the HTML tags. When I put these tags in the front of the post

Then it looks great as a stand-alone web page. Actually, the first post here is several posts in the old UBB page.

I tried inserting these tags with the forum post editor, and it had no effect. Apparently this is because the forum inserts its own hidden tags and page organization HTML, unknown to the user of the post editor. Evidently there is a tag conflict somewhere. I haven't found it yet. I'll keep looking....

EDIT:

OK, I think I understand the problem. By opening the entire web page with an HTML editor, I see that the original HTML had < and > characters to delimit HTML tags, but someone copied that original HTML into this page using the post editor. The post editor caused the original < and > characters to be replaced by &lt (less than) and &gt (greater than), which cause text displays of < and >. The original < and > characters are lost, so the page as it stands is not valid HTML.

I can't fix it, because the only tool I have, the post editor, is what is causing the substitution problem. Whoever did this editing needs to figure out how to set it straight. I think that an href link to a separate HTML page might work.

As a temporary measure, below are links to the first two posts as separate HTML files in my own web space:
