I was just curious to hear if anyone found the strategy guide very helpful. I usually like them when I am play a strategy game as I find out about the strength and weakness of each unit.

Also, does it have a breakdown of where you should fire at each boat?

one vote for me. yes it has all the things you mentioned, and the historical background of each unit. multi strategies, sp strategies, hit points, weak spots, etc....

I have the Prima Games eGuide and find it very helpful. It has a walkthrough for the Naval Academy, the US campaigns and the Challenges.

It has the specifications on the ships, planes and submarines, and the specifications on all the weapons.

It also provides practical tips about what ranges are optimum for successful kills.

It does not show the actual controls, since it is generic for all versions. You have to use the Naval Academy or game booklet for the detailed controls.

It is a little tedious to use, since it does not have an active table of contents. You have to search for text, scroll through, or set your own bookmarks at the chapter headings you care about. Also, you cannot open it to multiple pages and switch back and forth.

I'd pay money to be able to access a secure strategy guide site or something along those lines, but I don't want to bother going out of my way to buy it in a store or to wait for it to come by mail.

Totally not worth it. I bought it thinking they would actually help with strategy... but nope.
I did learn a couple things in there like damage and armour values. However I could have learned that with google.com

I'm not buying anymore strategy guides. I purchased oblivions, graw, BF2 (PC version), and this one. You can honestly find all that information online. As for toilet reading, well, I have much better books then guides that tell you nothing. Maybe if the guides came out 3 months after release, where prima might actually be able to tell you REAL strategy to use in online battles and whatnot it might be worth it, but as of yet, totally not worth it.

I rarely buy strat guides, because I prefer to figure out missions totally on my own - having a walk-through ruins some of the fun for me. I did buy it, mainly for a reference on the various units.

If you aren't familiar with the history surrounding the game, and basic naval concepts, then I would recommend it.

Strategy guides never help with strategy, unless you count having a hard copy of the maps as help, they just tell you how to do the missions

The game seems very short to me. Doesn't seem worthwhile for so few missions.

You can buy an online version of the strategy guide through primas website. About the only usefull thing it gives are the armor values of the ships. However w/ updates that could all change and become outdated very quickly. Even the armor values and weak spots are somewhat useless. IMO it can be difficult to hit a specific spot on a ship consistantly whith another ship unless the person you are playing is awful or you are extremely close. With planes its somewhat useless because you can only control one of the 3 planes(maybe 2 if you are quick and lucky). Obviously over time i'm sure it would add up but its made less relevant by the fact you can't choose where the other two planes are going to hit, or if they will hit at all.

It also shows that it should be able to bring any ship other than the yamato down easier with dive bombers if you could hit the same spot because the armor is weaker on the top of the ship than below. However it appears that the armor rating below the ship is one total number while (say 150). where the top of the ship is split up into 4 or so sections with each having a lower armor rating. So I imagine if you could hit one section you are better off with bombers.
