Love / Hate !
Hate is very harsh, more annoying when you think what this game could have been or could be with some tweaks.
I've played the demo to death, and while the graphics are very good , even on my GF6600GT, the gameplay itself is after a few hours of play, well near boring.
Tactics, when all is said and done, it comes down to going toe to toe with ships. No tactics ARE or CAN be involved when you have to sail a BB ship up to 1.8/9 (miles I take it) to fire apon an enemy ship. Its a akin to a FPS and you and your foe standing toe to toe and firing all your weapons until one or the other falls or in this case sinks.
On screen this 1.8 looks like a few hundred yards, if they had asigned the proper ranges to the ships guns, then you would find that you would have to use tactics and the shots over the longer distances would be less effective. But it would stop what has come to be online some what of a mad rush to the middle ground (or sea) between the american and japanese island bases, and having a fish in the barrel shoot out.
As Ive said after playing the demo over many nights for several hours at a time, these things start to show. Even flying 3 bombers and escort to bomb the airfields, your planes are shot down with easy. Is there any built in variables, as in good pilot averga pilot poor pilot, in all the games I played 1v1 the AI basically never missed and you flights would be downed before you knew it.
Against someone who has played the demo before , we were getting about an hours play out of each game. But in between, as I said , it basically because a toe to toe fight with the battle ships and fighter escort either round your carries or airfield. Bottom line sail a BB to the shipyards and basically write that ship off, but before she went down you had destoryed there shipyards and after that is was just a matter of time to win.
Tactics are in the game, but in the end of little use as the range that ships can open up on each other as I said is like 2 guys in UT standing toe to toe and letting loose, no tactics what so ever.
Will I buy the game , yes but as a bargain bin shot. Yes I know its not a sim, but strip away the graphics and light and sound show, and you left with a very arcadey shoot em up!
which I find a very great shame.
