Love / Hate !

Hate is very harsh, more annoying when you think what this game could have been or could be with some tweaks.

I've played the demo to death, and while the graphics are very good , even on my GF6600GT, the gameplay itself is after a few hours of play, well near boring.

Tactics, when all is said and done, it comes down to going toe to toe with ships. No tactics ARE or CAN be involved when you have to sail a BB ship up to 1.8/9 (miles I take it) to fire apon an enemy ship. Its a akin to a FPS and you and your foe standing toe to toe and firing all your weapons until one or the other falls or in this case sinks.

On screen this 1.8 looks like a few hundred yards, if they had asigned the proper ranges to the ships guns, then you would find that you would have to use tactics and the shots over the longer distances would be less effective. But it would stop what has come to be online some what of a mad rush to the middle ground (or sea) between the american and japanese island bases, and having a fish in the barrel shoot out.

As Ive said after playing the demo over many nights for several hours at a time, these things start to show. Even flying 3 bombers and escort to bomb the airfields, your planes are shot down with easy. Is there any built in variables, as in good pilot averga pilot poor pilot, in all the games I played 1v1 the AI basically never missed and you flights would be downed before you knew it.

Against someone who has played the demo before , we were getting about an hours play out of each game. But in between, as I said , it basically because a toe to toe fight with the battle ships and fighter escort either round your carries or airfield. Bottom line sail a BB to the shipyards and basically write that ship off, but before she went down you had destoryed there shipyards and after that is was just a matter of time to win.

Tactics are in the game, but in the end of little use as the range that ships can open up on each other as I said is like 2 guys in UT standing toe to toe and letting loose, no tactics what so ever.

Will I buy the game , yes but as a bargain bin shot. Yes I know its not a sim, but strip away the graphics and light and sound show, and you left with a very arcadey shoot em up!

which I find a very great shame.

Think the single olayer game will be very different! less units you will need more skill. As for the multiplayer if you play quality opossition you will have to use clever tactics which will make the game more intresting!

I will wait and see , but I would doubt that you would need more skill, reason being, the range of the ships guns.

There are no tactics to employ when the only way you can fire on an enemy ship is by sailing right up to it (1.8/9m to near on screen ) and blasting away to try and sink it before it sinks you.

And even if you can turn off the "radar" go to map and you see where the enemy are, even if you could turn this off , what would be the point! As you have to sail right up to the enemy ships to fire on them.

As I said , I had a lot of hope for this game, but feel let down. For all the looks the real ships the real aircraft types in the game, it all comes down to a shoot'em'up.

That point can not be in dispute, the demo proved it with the short very very short range that ship's have to close to , to open fire. where are the tactics in that, and I can't I am very sorry to say, see it being any different in the single player game.

I think you are taking a very cursory approach to the tactics of the game.

There are plenty of tactics:

Do you concentrate all of your fire (ships and bombers) on 1 thing (i.e. Take out the battleship shipyard)?
Do you split your forces and try to take out 2 targets quickly?
Do you build for speed (fighters & destroyers), or power (bombers, torpedos, battleships, cruisers), or balanced?
Do you wait and see what the other team is attempting to do an THEN react?
Do you play offense (biggest guns) or defense (anti-aircraft ships near your assets)?
Do you use formations for your ships or create separate plans for them?
Are you prepared for combating subs or do you hope that your opponent doesn't launch any?
Can you distract your opponent to the west while you execute your true plan to the east?

I agree that there is also an element of action to the game, but I like the balance between the two. If you REALLY think it is just a slugfest in the middle of the board, then you haven't been playing against a competitive team...you've been playing 4 individuals.

It's a fun game, but I agree there *definitely* needs to be some key changes. As of the demo, the balance is weighed far too much in favor for the capital ships. There either needs to be a decent buff for the planes or they need to allow airfields to launch twice the number of planes.

In real life, planes are overpowered vs ships, so we don't need to go that far. It just needs to be an even balance so if your ship is sailing to blow up a shipyard, a concerted effort by planes should easily stop it. Currently, that is not the case.

I am afraid I agree with the topic poster on many of his points, which I find quite valid...

The gameplay feels so fresh and fun in the start, but it gets a bit old. But maybe that's because I've only been playing Salomon Islands and not the sp yet...still - he is right in some og the things he says

I do believe planes machine guns should get a little more power. This will eliminate the Kamikaze galore since people don't like to wait for landing and reloading ordinance. If the machine guns did some damage to the ships the whole balance of the game will get more interesting cause now ships will not ignore none torpedo planes and air support will be required.

After all in WWII one of the biggest pains for the war ships were the constant rape by fighters gunning down the flight deck and even igniting fires on board.

love the game, hate the player lol. i enjoy playing this game, it makes me think of enigma rising tide on steroids. just a few bad eggs in the playerbase ruin it sometimes, either going off on there on and getting killed, then blaming you for it, or some such. i actually got accused of hacking because the host of the game was unable to kill my kongo that was parked and blasting away at his shipyards (he was not in the bb). since i was controlling the airfields originally, and only after the game started found out i had control of the shipyard, i just built it and a destroyer, assigned repair teams evenly, and told the ships what to attack. i left them pretty much alone after that, mainly concentrating on getting my bombers to and from their target safely.
