Way back in March (I think) of 2005 (??) the official website went live and there is a section to sign up for news letters. Will news letters be going out? I would have thought that atleast when the E3 trailer hit live that would have warrented a news alert.
Also, please note that the new registration does not give the US as a country to choose. Someone might want to look into that. I have posted about this game alot in other forums for several years now. Actually since the tech demo trailer, and I have had several inquire about what to do since the US is not a country option.
I also forgot to ask. Will the official website have its own forum or will everything be here?
Does Eidos or teh Devs plan on releasing any kind of modding tools for teh game?
Any idea on when or if any will be released?
I am planning on maybe trying my hand at it but I do know I will be making some screen savers (if anyone is interested). Is there anywhere where I can get pictures of BM that are not exclusives for other sites?
Are any of the original Mithis team still working on the game? So many rumors and such. I use to talk to Cmdr Koenig and others and they were all great people.
I know that demo dates are usually not listed until very close to release so I won't go there but is there any public information on what the demo (if released) would include? MP/SP? and will a demo be released for both PC & 360?
In the old tech demo it showed a cockpit view however every trailer I have seen since does not show that. Has that been dropped or it just hasnt been shown?

Are you going to be needing any beta testers for this game?

My understanding is that the beta on this game was internal. I asked some others in SCi/Eidos a little over a year ago:D

I have a question about mulitplayer action, how will this work,I mean obviously there will have to be teams,BUT will each user have its own navy or will they use the same fleet?
I mean if I use certain tactics,I know I dont want Chip taking my escorts on some wild sub hunt goose chase
now not that this would be a bad thing either.actually, both ways would be pretty cool.
(no offense to chip, its just I have been lurking this forum for ages and I know for the longest time he was the only one who posted here on a regular basis so he is the one I can poke a little fun towards)

What is the Dev. Team's view on the issue of Scripted vs. Dynamic campaign?
Will we have a good mission editor to create scenarios? We could then create historically realistic ones.
Will there be an ability to control engines (both types) separately (port or starboard)?
What about navigation? How will maps look like? And what information will they include on?
How moddable will the game be?
How detailed will the simulation be?
Will 'Punkbuster' be incorporated?
How will radio communication work between fleets? Like, passing on information or asking for support?
If in the WWII a ship was under attack by a submarine or a ship, they used a kind of "international distress frequency" to call help by Morse code, and the U-boats sometimes caught those signals after attack. Is it possible for the player catch these kind of signals after a ship attack to know the ship requested help?
Is MP missions Co-op or versus?
Is there any consequence for accidentally sinking Neutral, Allied, or Hospital ships, aircraft or subs?
How large will the battleground be once the battle begins? What’s the current limitation?
Are tides/streams modelled correctly?
Will it be possible to receive weather forecasts by radio? And are we able to make some repair in neutral or allied port city?
Will there be the ability for us to lay mines? This would be great if we are stalking a port we know has heavy shipping traffic.
Keep the questions coming chaps - I'll see if I can get some of the dev guys on here - if not I'll put all the questions into a long list and see if I can get them answered

if a ship were sinking, then when it is going to the bottom (completeley under the water) could a sub run into it and blow up or would it pass through?
if a ship sunk in shallow water could you run into it?
if a ship were sinking and a sub were under it could that sub keep it afloat?
if a sub were to come up under a ship would the ship rise?
princecaspian4
11-20-2006, 06:14 PM
for the last 2 of your questions i think a ship would be to heavy and it would damage the sub, and if it was small enough to be lifted (PT boat) it would probably just be pushed aside. that's just my guess, i could be totally wrong
OK! Here are some answers to keep things ticking over. Stuff that I haven't answered here I'm referring to the dev guys so they should be answered soon
Way back in March (I think) of 2005 (??) the official website went live and there is a section to sign up for news letters. Will news letters be going out?
I'm organising a newsletter now - hopefully sending it out soon, certainly this week all being well.
Also, please note that the new registration does not give the US as a country to choose.
It should be fine now if you select the US version of the site.
Does Eidos or teh Devs plan on releasing any kind of modding tools for teh game?
No plans at the moment as far as I know. I'll speak to the dev guys about this as it would be cool.
I am planning on maybe trying my hand at it but I do know I will be making some screen savers (if anyone is interested). Is there anywhere where I can get pictures of BM that are not exclusives for other sites?
Great, I'm aiming to get some new stuff added to the fankit for this kind of thing.
I know that demo dates are usually not listed until very close to release so I won't go there but is there any public information on what the demo (if released) would include? MP/SP? and will a demo be released for both PC & 360?
News coming soon.
In the old tech demo it showed a cockpit view however every trailer I have seen since does not show that. Has that been dropped or it just hasn't been shown?
You are able to go into first person view in some vehicles - planes mainly, but there's no visible cockpit as such.
I have a quick question as well....can we drive the carriers???
You can sail them ;)
Who was the artist from the artwork for the wallpaper? Any additional works?
It's from the developers end of things. I'm hoping to get some prints made as competition prizes. Watch this space!
Are you going to be needing any beta testers for this game?
The testing is taken care of internally I'm afraid.
I have on very important question. Are there gonna be more battle ship's then what they have listed on the Game site's home page.
Yes! Loads more ships and planes to come. We'll be updating that section of the site soon
I hope that's OK for now, I'll get answers to the other questions soon.

Subs could only hear the ping when the sonarman on the DD transmits the ping
dargo
11-22-2006, 02:12 AM
Can you set the sonar / radar on manual so that you can operate ( see and hear ) with keys?
Can you manual operate the guns / torpedoes?
We've got a new trailer, it's going up on battlestations.net soon, but in the mean time you can see it here (http://uk.gamespot.com/xbox360/strategy/midway/index.html?q=midway).
Here are some more answers for you....
1. Are multi player missions Co-op or versus?
Multi player is versus. Currently 4 v 4 is the max number of players.
2. Is there a mission editor to create scenarios?
There isn't a mission editor. We'll reveal more information to the community about all the missions that exist soon.
3. Will there be an ability to control engines (both types) separately (port or starboard)?
You can’t control engines independently. You control the speed of the ship (forward or reverse) with one analog stick and the direction with the other.
4. How does radio communication work between fleets? Like, passing on information or asking for support?
There isn’t radio communication as you control every element of the game.
5. If in the WWII a ship was under attack by a submarine or a ship, they used a kind of "international distress frequency" to call help by Morse code, and the U-boats sometimes caught those signals after attack. Is it possible for the player catch these kind of signals after a ship attack to know the ship requested help?
There are verbal alerts in the game, so if an enemy sub enters an area covered by radar and is detected, an alert will be heard saying “we’ve detected a sub sir... etc”.
6. Is there any consequence for accidentally sinking Neutral, Allied, or Hospital ships, aircraft or subs?
It'll make your mission significantly more difficult to complete!
7. Will it be possible to receive weather forecasts by radio? And are we able to make some repair in neutral or allied port city?
Weather has no direct affect on gameplay. Repairs are done to ships by the crew onboard and is managed by the user.
8. Will there be the ability for us to lay mines? This would be great if we are stalking a port we know has heavy shipping traffic.
Mines aren’t in the game.
9. Is there passive sonar? (If not will the enemy be able to hear the pinging when you get near, because in the videos when you saw a sub you could hear it pinging)
At most depth levels except the deepest, a ship with radar will detect an enemy sub when it’s within range. The pinging noise indicates to the user controlling the sub that they’re being tracked from above i.e. their sub has been detected.
10. What about navigation? How will maps look like? And what information will they include on?
The maps look great and are very detailed. The map serves as a great way to switch between units while in the heat of the battle. I'll get some screenshots up in the coming weeks.
11. Any plans for a PS3 or Wii version? Anyone else think the motion sensor controllers would rock on this game?
Not as far as I know at the moment.
12. Can you manually operate the guns / torpedoes?
Yes you can.
And the dev guys have kindly provided these answers:
13. What is the Dev. Team's view on the issue of Scripted vs. Dynamic campaign?
The challenge with Battlestations: Midway was building the innovative game system in the first place. We weren't completely sure how players would receive it and so we choose the conservative option. We're really open to the community's views, if they'd like to see a more dynamic style game here is the place to let us know.
14. Will 'Punkbuster' be incorporated?
No.
15. How large will the battleground be once the battle begins? What’s the current limitation?
The complete size of a map is 20 by 20 km, included with an additional 2 km "border zone" where the player will be warned to turn back. So the whole battleground is 18 by 18km.
16. Are tides/streams modelled accurately?
No, we don't have tides/streams in the game, because of the scale of the battle it isn't so important.
17. If a ship were sinking, then when it is going to the bottom (completely under the water) could a sub run into it and blow up or would it pass through?
Yes, the sinking ship can collide with a sub and even damage it.
18. Are any of the original Mithis team still working on the game?
Yes :)
I hope that helps. More soon!

Under the system requirements they recommend Videocard: Nvidia 6800 Series or equivalent (2.0 pixelshader compatible) which would be dx 9c. So they don't say for sure I believe windowsxp would be OK. maybe the release date is to make sure its Vista compatible.

First I want to thank you and the dev team for the fast reply
Second the reason I asked about the mission editor is that we at the WolfPack League (http://www.subclub.info) / Eagle league (http://www.subclub.info/egl) ( Wolfpack League and Eagle League are registered trademarks. Subsidiary of the World Sim Network. (http://www.subsim.com/worldsim.htm) ) play STAT games online and campaign games. There are missions writers that make every month STAT missions that people play and record there result into the database of the WPL see www.subclub.info, so I and many players of the WPL/EGL would very like to see a kind of mission editor or a way to edit/make the missions manualy.
Thanks

OK, I'll note this and make sure it's passed onto the decision makers and the dev team

Dutch Jester
11-24-2006, 03:58 PM
Will the online play be like the game "Chromehounds"(for the 360), where you choose your team, in this case allies or japanese, and play to win the war in battles at certain spots, like Midway, and when a country wins, the war is reset?
princecaspian4
11-25-2006, 07:49 AM
ya, and if they did it in battlestations the countries would be real, so you would have the problem of people actually caring who they fight for (a problem you wouldn't have as much trouble with if the countries were fictional)
also, another question, if you rammed a ship or plane into a ship would it do damage? and if so, would it do enough damage to make Kamikaze attacks a viable tactic?

Thanks for the new trailer it is a real teaser, can't wait.
I have a question in first person views for the planes can you takeoff and land on the aircraft carriers.
Could you explain the different views and if you can zoom in and out.
Is there a provision for taking screen shots or recording a movie.
Thanks
chip5541
11-25-2006, 09:32 PM
Screen captures should not be a problem. Movies may be a little more hard to come by as very few games actually have that. Only Company of Heroes comes to mind and even that had to be patched to work. I recommend a program called FRAPS for recording.
gzr_groundhog
11-26-2006, 10:34 AM
Thanks, I have fraps and use it a lot. My question was if this would be available in the software like it is in the Microsoft flight simulators. It would be nice to share videos of different views between on line players. This could be useful for mission development but could be done with an outside software if necessary. I'm really impressed with the graphics for this software but the unknown factor for me is if this is going to be a realistic strategy simulator for the PTO WWII era or is it going to be an arcade game. The article in the holiday issue for PC Gamer states " Suddenly, the game transformed from a navy combat game into an arcade-style airborne shooter". I realize that its not a flight simulator in that it doesn't have a cockpit view but are flight characteristics realistic in that you feel that your are flying a WWII fighter in actual combat conditions or is just going to be an arcade shooter with outstanding graphics. As you probably guessed my interest is in flight simulators but find the idea of strategy simulator that includes flight and naval combat is very intriguing if its directed at some historic accuracy and is more of a simulator rather then a arcade game. I wish they would be more specific what audiences they are directing this towards.
They need to correct this in "Hints & Tips (regarding the SBD Dauntless)
Second-best dogfighter" to it should be strong against Torpedo Bombers and Recon Planes.

Found it
Sorry, but she was a flawed design from the get go. While massively armored and otherwise well protected, she exhibited typical Japanese damage control design principals and training. She also had a relatively deep draft and some sea keeping qualities that her crew were not fond of. In addition her fire control was far less than that of her American and British counter parts by 'wars end'.
A one on one engagement at night against say the Missouri would have been a definate defeat for the Yamamoto... would take a while for Missouri to pound her into submission, but here radar controlled fire control and better damage control features would win out over the heavyier armament of the Yamamoto.
By day I think it' boils down to which captain sailed their ship better and who's damage control coped better (edge to the US ship most likely). The Yamamot's fire rate is not quite as fast, but the actual broadside throw weight of her main guns (plus secondaries if they dared to get in 'that close') seriously outweights and out-ranges the best of the american BBs by upwards of 15%. At extended ranges both would have to rely on a tactical spotting craft given the excessive range of their main guns (especially the Japanese) and perhaps radar for 'on the horizon' engagements (edge US). It's an interesting tactical situation in daylight, the edge perhaps going to a well captained and well crewed Yamamoto (which she wasn't by war's end).
She also lacks the AAA armament to really defend her self well. Even at the end, when the Japanese tried to throw a bunch of extra light weight AAA on her it just wasn't enough... she's too big of a target and her fire control and AAA arangement simply not thought out well enough for the threat that aircraft eventually would represent in the age of the Carrier.

PS- Some more answers coming up.
Will there also be more dutch ships like the java-class (dutch light cruiser)
There is only one type of Dutch ship, the De Ruyter class.
Will the online play be like the game "Chromehounds"(for the 360), where you choose your team, in this case allies or japanese, and play to win the war in battles at certain spots, like Midway, and when a country wins, the war is reset?
Yep. When playing online you pick a side - Americans or Japanese. A lot of the maps played during the single player campaign can be fought on during the multiplayer. This includes maps such as Midway.
ya, and if they did it in battlestations the countries would be real, so you would have the problem of people actually caring who they fight for (a problem you wouldn't have as much trouble with if the countries were fictional)
also, another question, if you rammed a ship or plane into a ship would it do damage? and if so, would it do enough damage to make Kamikaze attacks a viable tactic?
Ships which ram each other can damage each other. Planes will frequently be destroyed if involved in a midair collision. Size is a factor when colliding with a vehicle. Some ships can be destroyed by repeated kamikaze attacks.
Thanks for the new trailer it is a real teaser, can't wait.
I have a question in first person views for the planes can you takeoff and land on the aircraft carriers.

Thanks
The user can take off and land in first person view.
Could you explain the different views and if you can zoom in and out.
Thanks
There is the default 3rd person view on all ships/planes. 1st person view is also included on all planes. Binocular view/zoom view can be accessed by most planes and vessels allowing the user to see further in more detail. There is also a map view where units can be given orders and an overview of the battlefield can be observed.
i dont know if anyone has already asked this but can more than one person control a ship, like one person drive another use AA and so on?
Only one person can control any one unit at a time.
I hope this help guys. Keep an eye out for developers Rfx and Klaude from Eidos Hungary who'll also now be around to answer your questions :)

thank you for the answers,
because you have to choose which side you are on (allied or Japanese) will you have to wait for a while before switching to the other side so that when one side starts winning you don't have everyone switching to that side (that always happened in Mech Assault 2 Lone Wolf's conquest mode which sounds basically the same as this), and if you do have to wait, how long?

How would you describe this game ? More startegy, more simulation, more arcade ? Startegy with simulation mode or Startegy with arcade mode ? Screens are great, 3D modeling lovely, how with realism then ? Will fans of naval simulations find "Battlestations Midway", as a good realistic game ? Or you would say this is title will be more atractive for naval strategy fans ?

but with the higher capabilities of the 360 and PC's in general why would you make a game that is outdated by 3 yrs when you want to promote the NEW SYSTEM that you just put out 1 yr ago

another question, in multiplayer, will you be able to chose which ships you have in your fleet, or will everyone get the exact same fleet?
Rayze
12-02-2006, 10:12 AM
hi im Rayze i have read most of the questions and have a couple of my own.
If a shell hits the ship you are controling, say you are controling the guns, if a shell directly hits your back turret will it render it disabled but at the same time enable you to use your forward turrets? or is the damage detail not that specific? also if your ship is sinking untill your weapons are submurged can you still use them?
And on play.com it says the release date is 22/12/2007 i know play.com's dates change as the release dates change they keep upto date, so does this mean it is actualy out at that date or it is jan-feb like some people mention of?
apart from is there a demo before Xmas i think thats all from me.
thanks in advance

when a ship is firing at a target all the guns that bear on that target are slaved together(3 turrets as in the yamato=9 guns)
should 1 of those turrets get knocked out then only 2 turrets will fire(6guns)
if the game is written to be true to history once the ship is in that much trouble the crew will either be abandoning ship or all are working to keep it afloatthe turrets are very heavy machinery on the order of hundreds of tons for battleships so they will need power to operate
so you will need generators that are still on line to do that
with a ship in that state the captian would order all power to propulsion and pumps to keep the ship afloat and retreat from battle space
hi im Rayze i have read most of the questions and have a couple of my own.
If a shell hits the ship you are controling, say you are controling the guns, if a shell directly hits your back turret will it render it disabled but at the same time enable you to use your forward turrets? or is the damage detail not that specific? also if your ship is sinking untill your weapons are submurged can you still use them?
And on play.com it says the release date is 22/12/2007 i know play.com's dates change as the release dates change they keep upto date, so does this mean it is actualy out at that date or it is jan-feb like some people mention of?
apart from is there a demo before Xmas i think thats all from me.
thanks in advance

i know, but i was wodering if this was going to be implemented into the game , as in yes i am maning my 3 16inch guns is it possible for me to try and nock out only guns, like is the damage system going to be that accurate or will it be so much damage the ship sinks, just wonderd if the damage system was indepth, that would be great i would love to slap a salvo into the rear end of a yammato and hear the driver complain he only has forward working turrets :P and as for hits to the bulge would that be after hit by so many direct torpedos would your ship be slowly sinking but still useable? i just generaly wanted a quick throw up on how the damage system is going to be like :)

i think that you can nock out individual guns (or turrets in the case of the main guns), and i think beastttt is right about when the ship is sinking, i would think that once a ship starts sinking, the crew would be more concerned with getting off,

yeah I would love to know this also
from what I have gleened from the website this it what I have deduced
1 fletcher and fubuki DD's will be virtually identical even though they had some major differences in real life
sofar in the line up of ships we have these ships and there closest opponets posted so far IMHO
Allied Japanese my opinion
Yamato nothing less than a N Carolina,S Dakota, or an Iowa class could take her on in a 1 on 1 fight
KGV Fuso/Ise close in fire power but KGV is much newer by 25 yrs
New York/Texas Kongo/Hiei both near the same age(WWI vintage but Kongo class were battle cruisers and much faster than the New York class(30kts vs 21kts)fire power 10x14" NY vs 8x14" Kongo
Repulse Kongo both the same age both BC's
speed near equal firepower 6x15" for Repulse 8x14" for Kongo near equal but Repulse will have much better punch
not going to compare CV's this is a gun/torp comparision
N Hampton Takao/Mogami speed & firepower(Guns only) near equal the japanese have the advantage of Long Lance torpedoes and it is a big 1
York Takao/Mogami speed near equal less guns on York 6x8" vs 10x8" this Brit cruiser has 2 banks of 3 torps(21") compared to the Takao with 4 banks of 4 24" 2 banks per side and the long laances are more powerful and much longer ranged and faster than the 21"
Cleveland Kuma speed near equal gun firepower Cleveland walks all over the Kuma Kuma has 4 banks of 2 24"torps Cleveland has none also the Kitakami and Oi are part of this class and before the war were converted to torpedoe cuisers with 10 banks of 4 torpedoes plus reloads and yes these are the 24" long lance and they are monsters
Atlanta Kuma speed near equal gun fire power Atlanta has 16 5" guns and can bear 14 to a broadside to Kuma's 7 guns 6 for a broadside Atlanta has 2 banks of 4 torpedoes 21" see above for Kuma
i know, but i was wodering if this was going to be implemented into the game , as in yes i am maning my 3 16inch guns is it possible for me to try and nock out only guns, like is the damage system going to be that accurate or will it be so much damage the ship sinks, just wonderd if the damage system was indepth, that would be great i would love to slap a salvo into the rear end of a yammato and hear the driver complain he only has forward working turrets :P and as for hits to the bulge would that be after hit by so many direct torpedos would your ship be slowly sinking but still useable? i just generaly wanted a quick throw up on how the damage system is going to be like :)

I had a friend on american carrier during the suez crisis and there was a bit of a misunderstanding with the British he was the fire contol director for the 5" guns on the carrier the range was under 1 mile and he was aming for a Brit cruisers(WW2 vintage)range finders and said hta at that range he would have gotten the hits he wanted but that further out you just aiming for center of mass
also any of the naval games I have played have had a random hit location most based on what the % of the ship the item took up in each turret on a BB was about 2% of the area
i know, but i was wodering if this was going to be implemented into the game , as in yes i am maning my 3 16inch guns is it possible for me to try and nock out only guns, like is the damage system going to be that accurate or will it be so much damage the ship sinks, just wonderd if the damage system was indepth, that would be great i would love to slap a salvo into the rear end of a yammato and hear the driver complain he only has forward working turrets :P and as for hits to the bulge would that be after hit by so many direct torpedos would your ship be slowly sinking but still useable? i just generaly wanted a quick throw up on how the damage system is going to be like :)

Having had a chance to play this one, yes it is a comprehensive damage system. Be prepared to have firecrews on hand when a fire breaks out in the lower decks from a direct hit on your powder room.

Hello all, i have a quick question. Ive been reading that the joysticks control the ships, one stick for steering, one stick for throttle, if thats the case, how do you control the gun turrets/anti aircraft guns etc? thank you,
Matt
With ships one stick controls the throttle and rudder and the other stick controls the camera/aiming crosshair.
Will this game be available as a download? (I.E direct to hard drive ala steam games?)
Afraid not.
when will the game come out? everywhere i look i see a different date, most seem to be in January or February, but exactly when does it come out.
There is no official announcement yet. (You're on the right lines ;) Just don't mention I said anything  )
And will the PC and XBox versions be released at the same time?
TT
Yes, yes they will.
I just got back from EB (gots me a PS3 :rasp: ) and asked about Battlestations: Midway since there where alot of people in the store (hehehe nothing like getting the word out) and I asked about the release date. They have bother versions down for the 30th of January. I put $5 down on a preorder and got several other people attention.
You rock :D
another question, in multiplayer, will you be able to chose which ships you have in your fleet, or will everyone get the exact same fleet?
Each multiplayer map has a pre determined number of ships/aircraft which vary in class. The levels play out with this number of ships/aircraft no matter how many human players are in the session. So in a 1v1 game a player will have control of an entire fleet. Where as in a 4v4 game, they may only have 2 units under their control.

Hi Rayze :)
Damage is specific to different areas of a ship or plane. Planes can be shot down quicker if their engines are hit. Ships can have individual guns disabled and take localized damage to more vulnerable areas such as their fuel tank, magazine, steering etc. In your example - if one gun turret is knocked out all other turrets will remain operational. Also once a ship is sufficiently damaged to sink it will be uncontrollable and the weapons can’t be used anymore.

Yeah at the start of the war she had only 12x5"dp guns 2x6 turrets 3 per side
later she is refitted with a total of 32x5"dp guns 2x16 turrets 8 per side and over 100 25mm machine guns
the 2 best defences against bombers & torpedoe planes are
1.lots of fighter aircraft
2. no be there

Found it
Sorry, but she was a flawed design from the get go.
Even at the end, when the Japanese tried to throw a bunch of extra light weight AAA on her it just wasn't enough... she's too big of a target and her fire control and AAA arangement simply not thought out well enough for the threat that aircraft eventually would represent in the age of the Carrier.

about how long will the single player missions be? i know they won't all be the same length, but what is the average?
also, will planes run out of gas, i saw in the 3rd game play trailer that once they use their main weapon (like their torpedo or their bombs) and need to go back to the carrier to rearm, but will they run out of gas and need to return to the carrier to refuel, or will they be able to stay aloft indefinitely.
also, when bombing, will the bombs drift while falling to their target, or will they fall exactly where the targeting reticule is pointing, because some inaccuracy would help to make it more realistic, and make it so you have to chose between releasing the bomb low, leaving less space for the bomb to drift off target (meaning it will hit closer to where you want it to hit), but releasing it low exposes you to more ground fire, or releasing it higher leaving more space for the bomb to drift (meaning it will hit farther away from the target) but it would expose you to less ground fire.
also, in the single player battles, will the Japanese AI at least start out using the same tactics as the Japanese used in the real battle,
also, in a game play movie i saw that the player was flying a B17 above the clouds, how high are the clouds, and how high can planes go?
also (i say "also" too much don't i?), when in multiplayer, what happens when your ships are destroyed, but your teammates are still playing, what do you do? do you just watch your teammates like you do in many FPS games, or will there be something like what happened in chromehounds when you died (when you died in chromehounds you would re-spawn as a little foot solider with an assault rifle, i don't think you could kill enemy hounds, but you could run into the battles and watch, you could shoot the enemy hounds, and if you shot them enough they would become distracted and stop attacking your base or whatever you were doing and try to kill you by stepping on you, or you could fight with other foot soldiers shooting them), doing that helped pass the time after you died and was a lot more fun then just watching someone else play, so making it so that you could control something (doesn't need to be something that can do anything of consequence) makes it a lot more fun when you die early. will anything like that be in battlestations?

you could stay around to strafe various AA batteries to owdestroy or supress them
play target for enemy fighters in hopes that the other aircraft can hit their tagets
you could Kamakazi into an enemy ship in hopes of destroying it
I hope they don't put in respawning because then you will not have players husbanding their resources
they will throw away units and the game will never end and have no realizism what so ever

i like your ideas about strafing, being bait, and eventually going Kamikaze.
just so you know i think your right about re-spawning, what i was talking about was once a players fleet was destroyed, but his teammates were still alive and continuing the battle, that player would re-spawn into some useless vehicle just to help pass the time, because it's not much fun being dead, maybe they could put the player into a small unarmed recon plane, or something like that, not creating a ship and putting you in control, because if that happened, what you said would happen, no one would care about protecting their ships, but if they put you into something small and insignificant, you couldn't affect the battle from your grave (like you would if you re-spawned and were given a ship), at least not too much, and it would make it more fun for players who die early in a match.
Beastttt
12-06-2006, 02:23 PM
I could see respawning in 1 of your team's aircraft of what was left
just respawning into a recon plane it would need to be a ghost it could get shot down but could not Kamikaze into enemy ships
princecaspian4
12-06-2006, 02:53 PM
good point on the Kamikaze, but to over come that the designers would only have to make it so that you couldn't do any damage once your dead, because if you could kamikaze you could just keep re-spawning and doing it again giving your team and infinite amount of kamikaze planes which could give that team an advantage and as for taking over one of your teams remaining aircraft, i had thought of that, but if your team had no more aircraft what would happen then? all i want is something to pass the time, i wouldn't like it if the dead could still have a great effect on the battle, that's why i said unarmed recon plane, because all you could do is look for the enemy, and the other players could do that themselves only using up one plane, so one team wouldn't have an advantage over the other because they have a dead player

1 Will there be a set number of planes?
2. HOw many bombs/torps can a plain hold
3. How much ammo for the ships?
4. I didnt see an answer on clans? will there be one?
5. For aiming do you use high angle sights like in Chrome hounds for the this ships?
Do you adjust the angle or do you just look at the guy and shoot and the shell fly in a straight line?
6. DO the carriers actually do something besides launching planes? Does the player get to fly the planes?
7. Is there a possibility for more than 4v4? Like 8v8 or 6v6?
:)
looks like a great game cant wait till it comes out :)
princecaspian4
12-06-2006, 04:24 PM
1) i think you can have about 12 planes from a carrier at a time
2) dive bombers and torpedo planes carry 1 bomb or torpedo and the B17 holds 24 bombs I don’t know about other planes and it could be different for other planes that I haven’t seen
3) i think ships have unlimited ammo
5) you just aim at the enemy and the game calculates the angle for the shot, so they don't just fly in a straight line, but you don't need to figure out trajectory like heavy gunners did in chromehounds
6) don't know if the carriers can do smoething other than launch and land airraft (they do have AA guns, so they can fight off air attacks, is that what you ment?) and the player can fly planes
i got all of this info off the new gameplay trailer (here is a link to it, here, (http://www.gamespot.com/xbox360/strategy/midway/media.html) it is trailer #3) except for the ships haveing unlimited ammo, i think i heard that here

The aiming system looks pretty easy. in NF(navy field) you manually move your guns into position and adjust their angle. There is a auto system but your accuracy sucks with it -.-

12-06-2006, 06:14 PM
for ships, you may need to refuel, because there are fleet oilers in the game, but i don't think you would need to, because a ship can carry enough fuel to last through 1 battle, so i don't see why you would have to refuel mid-battle, it is more like that there are fleet oilers in the game because in a real fleet there would have been fleet oilers. if they are making the ships have infinite ammo meaning ships won't need to rearm mid-battle, i don't see why they would complicate matters by making you need to refuel, because if you need to refuel why not make you rearm as well, it would make the game more realistic, but it would make it more complex, and it wouldn't be fun to sit and watch your ships waiting in line to be refueled while the enemy is coming after you (it would be even more boring if the enemy wasn't coming after you, because then you would just be sitting there)

Hi I have a few questions.
Apart from the KG5 class, Repulse, York and the British DD destroyer will there be any other UK warships. Like the Edinburgh sub class Light cruiser (HMS Belfast)
Will the game only have ships relating to that era? I have seen SS with the names of ships in the top corner. One I saw was York CA. HMS York was never in the pacific during WW2; in-fact she was blown up on the 22nd may 1941 near Crete. Same goes for the KG5 class. They never reached the pacific till 1944 (apart from POW which was sunk heading to Singapore) Not that I’m complaining, I want more UK ships in the game ;).
I’m looking forward to this game very much. Please tell there Devs this game looks amazing.

can we also have a SS of HMS Repulse please :)

i think that it is only ships of that era, and i think the KG5 class ship in the game is the HMS Prince of Wales (i had read somewhere that one of the missions is the sinking of the Prince of Wales and the Repulse, although not sure why that is in the game because in the game you play as an American, maybe the article was old, but that is what i have read, and would explain why the KG5 class is in the game) also it is the York class, not the HMS York, the other ship in the York class the HMS Exeter did fight in the pacific and was sunk in March 1942

I've got a simple question -- didn't see is elsewhere on this thread but may have missed it:

I think its 11 to 12 missions in the allied campaign. Once you complete the campaign you are given X amount of Japanese missions to play that are harder.
I think I have also read somewhere that if you go above and beyond your mission (ie destroy a battleship that was not destroyed in the real battle) then you are rewarded with an extra mission.

you will be able to play as the japenese in the challenge missions
In the game info page it says,
“Features 11 epic campaign missions, 12 bonus challenge missions, naval training academy and an immersive storyline.”
And in the Q and A thing they have on the news page said,
“Single player also features a Challenge mode - letting you play the Japanese forces (some of the most exciting warships at this time were Japanese!) The Challenge missions are quite tough and have been designed to really test players' skills to the full. There are also a number of Naval Academy missions that you can dip into to find out about the in depth features, or maybe just to brush up on your basic skills.”
and i think Cpt.sharp is right, I had heard that you unlock these challenge missions by as he said going above and beyond by finishing some secret objective (ex sinking a certain ship you didn't need to, i think)

i think you can only launch 12 at a time, but if those are shot down there are more in the hanger deck that you can send up to replace the ones shot down, but i think that once you have lost them all, they are all gone

They fall exactly where the reticule is pointing.
also, in a game play movie i saw that the player was flying a B17 above the clouds, how high are the clouds, and how high can planes go?
It's difficult to say how high the planes go. Pretty high, there is a ceiling limit and clouds exist somewhere between this and the ground. I'll see if I can get one of the dev guys to help out.
also (i say "also" too much don't i?), when in multiplayer, what happens when your ships are destroyed, but your teammates are still playing?
Once all your ships/planes are destroyed you become a spectator for the duration of battle. However, any member on your team with more than one unit can assign a plane/ship to you. So the majority of the time it’s possible to have most people playing the level even if their own units have been previously destroyed.
1. Will there be a set number of planes?
Airfields and carriers have a max number of planes that can be launched/airborne at one time. This is 12 for the vast majority of the game. So for example, you may have a level with 2 carriers and an airfield which have launched a combination of fighters and bombers. At one time this can be a max of 36 planes in the air (of varying squad sizes determined by the player).
2. HOw many bombs/torps can a plain hold?
Bomb loads vary depending on planes size. So for example; a B-17 can carry up to 24 bombs, a Dauntless normally carries 1x 1000lb bomb and an Avenger torpedo plane carries 1 torpedo. Slightly different payloads can also be assigned to planes at the players discretion.
3. How much ammo for the ships?
Ships have a limited number of torpedoes, but an unlimited supply of shells/flak. Depth charges are also unlimited if the ship is capable of anti-sub warfare.
4. I didnt see an answer on clans? will there be one?
There isn't a clans feature in the game as far as I know.. what's the question?
5. For aiming do you use high angle sights like in Chrome hounds for the this ships?
Do you adjust the angle or do you just look at the guy and shoot and the shell fly in a straight line?
The view in Midway is in 3rd person for the majority of the time. On certain planes the player can go into 1st person mode to aim their weapons. You look at a target and shoot, the shell will then go to the location of the reticule at that time. The same principle applies for both ship and plane combat, although obviously the projectiles travel differently.
6. DO the carriers actually do something besides launching planes? Does the player get to fly the planes?
A carrier’s primary role is to launch planes. But they can also be moved to any location and their AA guns can be used effectively against incoming attacks from enemy planes. Planes launched from a carrier or airfield can be controlled by the player.
7. Is there a possibility for more than 4v4? Like 8v8 or 6v6?
:)
looks like a great game cant wait till it comes out :)
The max multiplayer numbers are 4v4.
I hope that helps everyone

Hello I have a question about the multi player aspect of the game. Will it just be death match or will it be more like battlefield where you fight over spawn points or parts of the map? Will you be able to costmize the multi player battles with the units you want in the battle or will that be set by the map you choose? And one last question do the Devs see the multi player aspect of the game as important as single player?

the units are set for each map, and i don't think there will be death match, i had heard that it will all be objective based games, also I asked the same question about release

when will the game come out? everywhere i look i see a different date, most seem to be in January or February, but exactly when does it come out.

The Catalina carries torpedoes but you can switch this to depth charges while it’s in the hangar. Aircraft deployed depth charges are a really good way to take out submarines, and of course that reflects reality.

There isn’t a County Class cruiser in the game, but now that we know someone likes it perhaps it can make it into download content. We need to stay aware of dates (even though we do stretch history a little in places). So we’ll check when that cruiser was in operation.

Between me and you I'd say you're probably thinking along the right lines there. But I didn't tell you that ;)
Question about aircraft carriers, if you launch all your planes and they all get shot down does you carrier regenerate more planes over time or does it become just an oversized AA platform?
Good question. That is the purpose of Carriers and was perhaps the shaping factor on sea war in this period. Think of your Carrier as a combined King and Queen piece in Chess: you need to protect it, but also it is a very powerful unit… via its aircraft. Keir is correct to say you can use its AA against aircraft and small boats, but you don’t want to get into a gunfight with a Battleship.

Keir - Thanks for the info provided so far!
I have a few questions:
1. Can the multiplayer game be played against the AI only, or does there need to be 2 or more players to play through the Multiplayer maps?
2. Map Size - 20 sq KM max ... Do each of the grids on the tactical map represent 1 sq KM? Can we assume that the largest maps in the game are twice the size of the maps shown in, say, the 'Tulagi' video?
Thanks in advance! Been looking forewrd to the game since 09/2002, back when the game was called "Midway: Naval Battles"! :)

how many carriers are you allowed to have per battle?
poey, honestly, i think the planes should be able to respawn, every 5 minutes or so, you get a few planes, that will make battle last long and make the nice and juicy. because 12 planes is only a 3 minute battle at most among 2 good teams... if planes respawned every 5 or 10 minutes, it will give you reason to hold onto your carrier after the first wave of planes... if there is limited planes, i think i kind of lost most interest in the game... sad to say it, but dang...
dang, honestly, it would be more interesting if the teams were 8v8, or maybe more, so more people can have more roles... 4v4 in a massive battle is kinda limited... especially with soo many beutiful aircraft zipping around.
is the downloadable content going to cost anything?
please make them free! paying for dl content is kind of a bad idea, also since you cant just download it, ya gotta get those dumb microsoft points to download it. all in all, please make the downloadable content free, it would be a generous touch.
flak fields are soo crazy to fly through!!! i love making and flying through them! good work on the game though! this is kind of a dumb question, but is it going to be released in the US right away?

Keir,
Thank you for your reply!
The County class cruisers were layed down in the 1920's and would comfortably fit into the timeframe offered by the game already.. my suggestion is that an expansion is made to include this sort of ship and some scenarios it was involved in! :D
When Japan dominated the early part of the pacific theater on the sea, its Empire stretched as far south to Australia as the Solomon Islands, which I'm sure you are aware of. The Allies suffered major naval defeats all the way through the year of 1942.
================================================== =======
I recommend a few battles for the game which fit in with the historical scope and ship classes so far available:
1) Battle of the Coral Sea - 4th to 8th May 1942
The first ever true "Carrier Battle".
This battle obviously preceded the Battle of Midway.
Sunk:USS Lexington, IJN Shoho
Heavily damaged: USS Yorktwon, IJN Shokaku
2) Battle of Savo Island - 8th to 9th of August, 1942.
HMAS Canberra, Australia's flagship and of the County/Kent class is sunk along with many American CAs and DD's by a raiding Japanese force at night.
This was one of the most clear cut naval victory for Japan in the war in my view!
I'm Australian, I've been to Guadacanal to see the battle sites and do some wreck diving, and my birthday is on the 8th of August - so the hairs on my neck always stand up whenever I hear about Guadacanal!
This is where my interest in the County class began - Shropshire was commissioned by the British government to replace Canberra. Both her and HMAS Australia (of the County class too, and THE first ship to receive Kamikaze attacks, and also suffer the most hits from kamikaze attack in the war!), lead Australia's navy from then on.
Indeed, I believe any of the naval battles in the Guadalcanal campaign could be considered possible scenarios, particularly the First and Second Naval Battles of Guadacanal, which saw both sides engaging with limited BB action.
The battles in the Guadacanal campaign which followed The Battle of Savo Island are as follows:
- Battle of Cape Esperance, October 11, 1942
- First Naval Battle of Guadalcanal, November 13, 1942
- Second Naval Battle of Guadalcanal, November 14, 1942
- Battle of Tassafaronga, November 30, 1942
The channel where these battles took place became a warship mass grave, and was nicknamed "The Iron Bottom Sound".
Hence my name
<<<<<<<<<<<
================================================== =======
I hope the above is some food for thought and might even be researched and considered for additional content!
It would simply be one of the gaming highlights of my life to see any of the above history relived in a game!

The diving is absolutely incredible!
Last summer I dived Cocos, the summer before that Galapagos. I've also dived at Hawaii, Lizard Island on the Great Barrier Reef, I've dived Belize's reef and the Blue Hole, I've dived Little Cayman and Cayman Brac, I've dived Oman, I've dived Maldives, and Mauritius, and Indoneasia where I learned in the open sea..
So... basically, without trying to sound pompous, the Solomons is fantastic diving! :D
Imagine Cayman Islands's visibility - 50 metres sometimes, and 28-30 degrees C water temp, with the usual Microneasia amazing soft corals and diversity! Truly amazing!
I went with my dad, and the only reason we didn't stay was because people at our hotel contracted malaria ****
So, we only did 3/4 dives I think.
That is how much of a measure this place is to still rate up there in my books.
Best dive was a Maru, I think the name was Toa Maru. There is a massive whole about midway through the ship which you can swim through. The ship was hit by US bombers and wallowed in the shallows for a few days with the hopes it would somehow limp home.. it was shortly finished off and plodded to the bottom with hardly any loss of life (ship bow... I think... is less than 10 metres from surface, stern about 50+).
Tanks, sake bottles, ammo everywhere. On the atoll nearby where we moored for a snack and breather, we walked along the beach.
I noticed a lump on the beach... moved closer... inspected it..
It was a box of shells, the contains spilled onto the beach, as if untouched for 50 years. The wood had fosilized and the shells had broken through one of the box's sides, cascading onto the beach forming a mini pile. They were rusted and some had fallen apart.
Had there been no rough weather for 50 years!? no one had dared to pick these up at any time since the war?
Were they primed and prone to explode if disturbed? - my dad came over and told me to back off because that might be the case!
We kept strolling along the beach but moments later I had to grab my dad and stop him from walking on a sea snake making its way back to the ocean. It was striped blue and black, a beautiful thing! Docile and with blunt fangs but still one of the most venomous and deadly things on the planet!
"thanks mate"..
The Solomons is wild, totally ****ing wild. It is like travelling through a time warp going there. I don't mean that about the peoples or cultures.. just the array of WW2 artefacts everywhere.
My dad has dived literally everywhere of significance and has been to a majority of major battle sites in the pacific (Chuuk, Palau, Yap etc.), and even on the Indian/Burma side of things, but he still rated this trip too.
I'm thinking of doing the Kokoda Trail with him, but its leach-tastic and two weeks+ of solid trekking and camping in jungle!
The land sites in the Solomons are another story! Ammo, barb wires fragments, you name it, it's still lying there like in 1942, except a bit rusty and covered in some soil!

sounds amazing, the only wreck i have dove on was in Grand Cayman (called the oro verde), it was the wreck of an old ship that the US navy sold and had been turned into a freighter carrying bananas (in the end the captain began to haul drugs, and was caught), but it was a total wreck, the only part that was intact was the front 10 feet of the bow, everything else had been spread across the reef by a hurricane. but i know someone who dove in Palau, there he dove on the wreck of a Japanese supply ship that spilled it's cargo when it was sunk, apparently all over the bottom he saw little bumps in the sand, later when he surfaced he asked what they were, and apparently they were land mines from the supply ship

Now my question is if your assigned a shipyard and your task is to build ships, do you get to control the ships after they are launched? and vice versa with the planes, or do you just control the facilities themselves? Thank you Keir as always.

The game is all about controlling the units. That includes ships (AA Guns, Artillery, Depth Charges and Torpedoes), flying the planes and piloting the subs - you're doing the flying, shooting, bombing if you choose or you can assign orders to your units and let them fight. Many of the previews I have read state that taking control of your units greatly increases their chances in battle. Even more of an incentive to take part in the action!
Check this new preview from IGN. It's pretty detailed:

when your flying a b-17, do the gunners auto target nearby enemy planes?
and when your a battleship duking it out with another, do your turrets auto target enemy planes while you shoot your cannons at enemy ships? because it would be a pain switching between the 2...

in would hope so, because if you get your carrier battle group (CVBG) to form a protective ring around the carrier the other ships in the CVBG would take most of the torpedo hits meant for the carrier, which would protect it from subs and the other ships would be protected by the carrier's planes.
i think you can do it, if you watch the tulagi walkthrough, when they give the order to attack, if you read the options for what orders you can give, on top is attack, to the left is orders (maybe some advanced controls), to the right is leave, and on the bottom is formation, so i guess you can order it into a formation

To Ericman55 there is going to be a demo but there is not a release date for it but it will not be out until 2007 I am thinking January. Also I consider WWII alone a compelling story, but as for your question about how good the story and missions will be truthfully what kind of developer would say anything negative about their game? ok here's a questions to give headaches
while the playing area is 18km x 18km which is a bit small for BB's to have their main guns to start plunging fire(shots hitting the deck instead of hitting the side belt)Cruisers and destroyer main guns will be plunging at that range will this be taken in to account
also can a battleship use it's secondary batteries(6"and 5" guns to take on small craft like destroyers and PT boats beacuse they fire faster and even 1
5" round would kill a PT boat
destroyers would take a bit more pounding
in the war machines section for the yamato for armor it just says 200
for KGV it says 170 both DD's have 50
is this the hit points of those ships and how would a 18.1" shell compare to hitting KGV which is armored and a fletcher which has none and a Ca that has some
lastly will there be long lances(24") for the japanese or will both sides have generic 21"torpedoes

more the question will armor work a 5"shell off a DD should bounce off the main belt of a BB even at point blank range
best places to hit in real life would be
1 under the main turrets for the magazines(also this will have the most armor)
2 under the smoke stacks and to the rear of then but well before the rear main turrets for the boiler and engine rooms
3 aft end of the ship under water(rear 1/6) for props, shafts and rudder

I could see you killing the crews on the 40mm and below size guns and even destroying them but if not destroyed they could be remaned maybe at the expense of the damage control, torpedoe, depth charge crews but then they may not be as good as that was there
the question is how much cross training goes on in that navy

why not give belt armor stats instead
sorry but who ever is designing the war machines page has almost no clue on giving the info out let alone corrrect
that also have been no updates to the page since I found the site
with a late january/feburary(game spot) release you would think there would be more ship and plane boxes filled
i some screen shots (here is the link http://www.gamespot.com/xbox360/strategy/midway/screenindex.html look at screen shot 26), you can see that the shells have a very high arch, so you could get plunging shots, and i don't know when you first found the main site but they have updated it since i found it, not much, but they have added to the war machines page, but your right, i would be nice if they added some more

1. how many vechiles will you be able to play as in single player e.g. all, some or not so many.
2. how many ships and aircraft and subs on the averadge multiplayer map
3. what game types are there for multiplayer and how do they work

if your flying a plane can you go to the tactical map, if so what happens to your plane ex: autopilot
this would be useful if your are needed on the frontline but dont want to switch to ship. Also is it possible to freeze the game while you are in the tatical map, it would make it much easier to coordinate in the heat of battle.
Thanks keir great job with talking to us that keeps me here, most dev. dont care it seems:thumbsup:

i have a question, if planes are on the deck of a carrier, can you strafe them and destroy them
also can the wreckage of vehicles do damage to a ship, ex. if you shoot down a plane and it hits a a ship will it do as much damage as if the plane just flew into the ship? and once you sink a ship, does it have momentum, will it keep going (and possibly ram an enemy ship)

i have a question, because planes can't run out of gas and i don't think they can run out of bullets, when a carrier is sunk or an airbase destroyed, what happens to the planes from the bases that are in the air? do they just stay in the air until they are shot down, or do they just fall out of the sky when their carrier is sunk

Planes do need to land to get ammo for their secondary weapons...but as for the machine guns, they have unlimited ammo. Not sure, but planes might even get to repair on runways and carriers. If a carrier is sunk,I'm sure that the planes will stay in the air until shot down,or, if another carrier has enough slots left (ie. the 12 slots it has for aircraft)...it might be able to support these planes.

but carriers have a limit of 12 in the air, so if the other carrier only had a few slots left, what would happen, because if my carrier was going to sink, i would try to get all 12 in the air to save as many as possible, so the other carrier may not have enough room, or there might not be another carrier

If there isn't another carrier,my guess would be that your planes would perform as normal, but just couldn't rearm/land. My other theory about another carrier supporting your planes was just a guess,no idea if it would work or not.

I also have a question concerning the damage models in the game because it looks like in some screen shots that shrapnel holes appear in the planes so i was just wondering if as they are shot up that the holes will appear in the plane instead of just the generic smoke and flames out the back as the sign that you have to kiss your ass goodbye and also can like wings be shot off and other parts

it isn't 4 hangers, just 4 squads, the numbers you saw were the numbers of each type of plane, and i am not sure if you can transfer planes to other carriers because when you want the plane to land, you just say land, it doesn't give you the option of where to land

Now I have a question. I read that this will be like Mech Assult (take over contries ie:islands, ect) and was wondering, will this have a type of player match(unranked) if you will (ie: Gears of War, Call of Duty 3).ne that has no effect on the "War". Also, will there be a kind of score board, shows how many time a sise has one a war, before being reseted? Also, I know that there are DD's in the game, anychance we're gunna get DE's, my grandfather fought on those. Thanks, and good luck at launch.
PS - what is the thread notification thing. will it tell ne if I am answered or quoted, or that i have made a post? (I didn't subscribe to this cause I don't know what it does, will it give me spam? like others sending random crap?)
PS answer my poll on wich version, 360 or PC. Thx again

it probably will have an unranked, i am not sure if it will go as far as Mech Assault: Lone Wolf went (it had the war mode, then a ranked mode that didn't effect the war, and each had their own leader board, then an unranked mode) i doubt that there will be DE's in the game because they were mainly convoy escorts, and they aren't listed on the war machines page

1. scripted AI or dynamic - will AI always do the same strategies? What kind of replay value or banking on mp to fill that role?
2. Any info on logistics side of game, got some glimmers can change some ammo loads, do some repairs, but not alot on the building and other aspects.
3. Still havent seen clear answer on carrier plane capacity. Can have 12 in air at one time but how many in storage to replace the 12 if they get shot down?
4. Catapault launched planes, how will these be handled as far as landing again?
5. What provides resources for building things? Key points , static income?
You know when first saw this game advertised I figured it was just going to be something like the other arcade games out like crimson skies or that other plane game.
I have been impressed with the detail and movies so far. The fact that planes actually come out unfolded from the carrier was cool, far better than just magically appearing.
If I had any request it would be to make the sequel more along the lines of the PTO series for the playstation or Pacific Storm with maybe less micromanagement.
Also think fuel was a factor in the war and would love to see it needed as it lends more authenticity.

Is it possible for ships to collide, i mean in mp if you are destroying another players eg destroyer can they possibly go full speed and ram you in a last ditch attack, and would it cause serious damage? I have heard about during night battles, ships could have collided with each other and sunk
Also if you can take control of certain aspects of your units
For Example a dive bomber
If you aim for a ships control room, and destroy it . Can the boat now be un-movable?. I have been reading about weak spots on a ship and was just wondering if that was possible.
-Mods-
I know how people say how mods can really expand the life of a game but i think mods really spoil the game, mods just cause your game to crash and sometimes damage your game or your computer.
-Ship Yards, Airfields-
For building new ships and planes, wouldnt it cost money and supplies? Honestly i wouldnt want this in the game but do you recieve anything in completing an objective in singleplayer so you can advance better equipment for the next level? Or destroying other player's units?
Sorry i ask to much :)
I suppose a night battle could be a hard bonus mission, it would take great skill and a watchful eye to stay clear and win :D

i already asked this question and here's the answer
i said
also, another question, if you rammed a ship or plane into a ship would it do damage? and if so, would it do enough damage to make Kamikaze attacks a viable tactic?
then keir said
Ships which ram each other can damage each other. Planes will frequently be destroyed if involved in a midair collision. Size is a factor when colliding with a vehicle. Some ships can be destroyed by repeated kamikaze attacks.

you can give orders concerning damage control, ordering more people to fight fires, or taking people from fighting fires and make them work the pumps to get flooding under control, also if an enemy is sighted, a little voice will tell you saying "we've sighted enemy planes" or something like that (if you listen while watching the tulagi walkthrough, you can hear them making those announcements)

Also on the Tulagi Walkthrough Video i think the guy says that he will use his landing craft to "take the island later in the level" and was wondering if that is part of a cut-scene or if you actually take the ship and do it (even though you don't start with it.)

i had heard that online, there will be a game type where you have an invasion fleet and must get it to the enemies island (while stopping the enemy invasion fleet from reaching your island), but once you've taken the island i think that is it, i don't think you can take over the enemies shipyards and air fields, as for offline play i don't know, i would think that you would just protect your invasion fleet until it reaches the island

i hope you can use any vehicle as long as its unoccupied... i know that in some games a noob will grab the carrier and be a total moron with it, but thats not a big concern, i hope that i can go fly while my bud can properly move the carrier, so that i dont have to.

i take it you unlock the ships and planes as you play through the SP missions. Will this effect the online multiplayer, like you have to unlock them before you use them? It would be useful so you don't get a whole bunch of n00bs that don't know how to use SS on your team :mad2:! I know that many people go strait online and have no idea what they are doing:mad2::mad2:

i don't think so, you might be able to give others your ship (transfer it to their fleet), but i don't think that you can just switch to any unoccupied ship or plane if it is in someone else's fleet, because then you would have problems with two people ordering the same ship to do different things, or people hogging the BB or the CV
imnotcanadian
01-02-2007, 10:52 AM
You will have a portion of the fleet assigned to you,and only you. Nobody can take control of it exept the AI and you. So no worries about a bf series repeat in that aspect. I don't think you will have to play single player to unlock ships, that would be ridiculous to me...but then again thats just my opinion.

You can probally make a trade (say,"If I give you this ship, will you give me that") witht ships....but then you would have to trust the other person to keep his end of the deal. If they let people pick which ships exactly, you would have one guy with the battleships and carriers, while everybody else is limited to smaller less significant (in terms of size) ships. You will be able to pick from different groups of ships such as a group of destroyers, carriers, etc.

How will planes get treated for rearm and repair?
Will they disappear soon as they land or will they get towed to the side? (saw a forklift looking vehicle but not sure if eye candy only)
If left on deck can an enemy strafe deck and cuase them further damage?

hmm... i was kinda hoping that it was 1 large fleet that you can all control, or if u had the option to close ur ship to other players, somethin like that... im not worried about noobs, because they couldnt keep up with us anyway.
trading ships would take too long in combat.

Yeah I saw that vid too just, but havent seen any with carriers with ships on the deck so was curious if they just magically poofed to rearm/repair.
On a side note to that, I hope there IS a way to cycle fresh planes out so wont always pull the half damged plane out like pacific storm does.

i don't think that it would take to long, it all depends on how you do it, it could be some complex process, or it could be as simple as selecting a ship and selecting an option like "transfer command to ..."
and your right i don't think you should need to unlock ships
imnotcanadian
01-02-2007, 07:44 PM
Well, you still do get to pick your ships.....in a way. The group you pick in the lobby will determine the ships you get in the match.
And yes,the "Your unit has been lost" message only came up because the plane he had selected was lost.

Well from the new preview and screenies @ hookedgamers, it may have some planes on deck for rearming. Which is cool because if you can find their carrier and catch them rearming a squadron you might be able to take out a few planes with a strafing run.

they can rearm, if they couldn't then planes would only be good for 1 attack, and if you watch the walkthrough, when he sends them back to land he says "... send them back to the ship to reload with new torpedoes" so you can rearm, planes probably rearm as soon as they land

no the planes land the dissapear from the map. it looks like when a plane lands you have to go to the hanger and launch more. as when he goes back to the map later on there is no sign of the planes but he would have the option to launch 3 more .

yes, so the planes returned to the ship and went into the hanger deck, and rearmed, it doesn't matter if they launch again as soon as they are rearmed, they rearm

This might already have been asked, but what will the subs entail in terms of detail and such. Will the subs and their controls have the kind of immaculate detail that was emphasized in SH3, or will they be more like the inanely simplistic subs in BF1942 with only the submerge and surface commands along with the arcadey torpedoes? It would be a great compromise if the ships were realistic but not too much like a simulation.

Here's a few:
Is there a way to play the multiplayer maps against AI only? Can two players play co-op against the AI or is it always versus?
Are there any HUD options (fade, remove ect)?
Is there a 'free camera' mode?
Are all the maps roughly the same size, or are any maps bigger than the maps we have seen in the videos, 10X10? Do you ever use the PBY's to actually scout?
Most importantly, IS THE GAME FUN???? :D

I noticed your keybindings, but on the 360 walkthrough when selecting an air unit, you had 4 options I believe.
Orders, Attack, Land, and Regroup. I would have to double check for ships but roughly same thing, forgot what replaced Land.
Anyways I was thinking that planes had at least a squadron formation and and regrouping put them back in it. Also was curious what Orders was for?

From wikipedia:
"Combat air patrol (CAP) is a type of defensive mission for fighter aircraft, in which they guard a designated site, either a fixed site on land, ships at sea, or less commonly support aircraft such as aerial tankers.
It typically entails fighters flying some sort of pattern around the defended object, while looking for incoming attackers. Effective CAP patterns may include aircraft positioned at both high and low altitudes, so as to shorten response times when the attack is detected."

Hi Guys,
Well, let me start by saying I'm very excited and curious about this game.
I have a few questions and I glanced at the forums and did'nt see these questions.
1) How deep will subs go? Is there a crush depth? A chance of hitting the bottom and taking damage? Whats the reload rate when you get rid of all the fish in the tubes?
2) How about maximum and altitude for planes? Is there a 'load-out'? I'm sure bombers will have a bomb load-out but will the MG's on all planes have a load-out or will you just be able to sqeeze the trigger til the cows come home? Will planes have a chance of taking damage when lowering the flaps during a high-speed dive?
3) Will you be able to jump station to station in bombers? From pilot to gunner? etc etc....
4) Will you be able to pilot the plane on take-off and landing? How much skill will it take to land a battle damaged avenger on the flite deck of carrier?
I realize this is a huge undertaking and I am very happy to have a game like this coming out for the 360. I was wondering how you guys (the devs) view this game, as far as it being a sim vs. arcade like?
Thanks as lot.
RB.

we have already asked about the max altitude for planes, but we didn't get much of an answer, and for bombers, you control all guns at once, just like on ships where you just switch to AA and take over all guns, i think it is the same for bombers
i have a few questions of my own, first is when you have control of something like artillery on a ship, and you are shooting at something that not all the guns can fire on (ex. you are shooting at something straight ahead of you, so the guns on the back of the ship can't fire on that), will the guns that can't hit the target go after other targets that they can hit?
also if you crash your plane into an enemy ship and your plane has bomb on it, will the ship take the damage of both the plane hitting it and the damage that the bomb would inflict or does it just do the damage of a plane without a bomb on it hitting the ship, also, will the type of the plane you hit the ship with affect the amount of damage or do all planes do the same amount of damage when they ram a ship?

Are island guns control or strictly AI? If AI which I am guessing , can we decide what they shoot at? So a gun isnt trying to track a fast moving PT boat and instead pounds the battleship?
Since the single player is based off same guy, will units carry over and earn experience, or is it a fixed starting amount?

If your units don't detect them, they won't show in the map. The detect radius is quite big so you will see the enemy planes coming long before they are in fire range.

Im not sure if this is good or bad. That's why I was hoping that the maps were bigger. There's not much of a chance to sneak around the map if the detect radius covers the whole map. Am I right on this Bossman, from what you have played?

The carrier's detect radius covers more than half of the map so it's a bit too big.

I have a question and i dont know if it has been Asked or not But if you are going fast enough in a sub when you reach the surface does the sub front end jump out of the water or do you just appear on the surface?
Thanks to Klaude from Eidos Hungary for his help with these questions! Hats off to him :)
i have a question.
Can you order ships to stay in formation with your controlling ship.
i.e. can you control the carrier and order the DD's to sail in a formation with the carrier to protect against ships/subs/Aircraft?
You can order ships to form up and stay in formation. You customise the formation using the command menu on X. A good tactic is to put two DDs on the same side of a CV or BB, and order them not to evade torpedoes unless you are at the helm. This forms a ‘wall’ to defend you on that side. They’ll also direct strong AA fire onto aircraft attacking from that angle.
Interesting Stuff Guys.
I have one question.
The Zero Fighter, Was made out of Several Wood pieces, To make it lighter.
Will this reflect damage in any way? This goes for other planes, and ships.
Historically the Wildcat and Dauntless (for example) were much tougher than the Zero. This is reflected in game in details like armour and stats – although I don’t know the exact numbers for the Zero, with allowances for game balance. Textures on the planes are detailed to reflect things like the poorer quality paint the Japanese were using.
Can we get a picture of teh Multiplayer setup screen/screens? Currious about the amount of options for setting up MP matches.
I’ll try and get one :)
i have some questions so here they are.
1. how many vechiles will you be able to play as in single player e.g. all, some or not so many.
2. how many ships and aircraft and subs on the averadge multiplayer map
3. what game types are there for multiplayer and how do they work
Thank you
1. You directly control one vehicle at a time, but you command (and can switch to) many other vehicles at the same time. Some missions give you just 2-4 units; others give you as many as 30.
2. That depends on what you decide to launch, but often 2 subs, 2-4 warships, and 12-24 aircraft, on each side.
3. Each map gives you a different mix of objectives, from asymmetrical battles where one side protects a single massive ship, to symmetrical fights where both sides have a carrier group. Sometimes your job is to escape, sometimes to destroy the enemy in detail, sometimes to take out objective points (like airfields).
Hi Guys,
Well, let me start by saying I'm very excited and curious about this game.
RB.
1. There is a crush depth at which you take damage, but you can’t hit the bottom (for gameplay reasons). The torpedo reload rate is slow(ish), but many subs have fore and aft tubes so good maneuvering will get you a second shot more quickly. Subs have a limited oxygen supply and different speeds when surfaced and dived. Historically WW2 subs traveled on the surface then dived for the engagement.
2. There is a maximum altitude which is artificially lower than reality, although still pretty high. As you guessed, there are bomb load outs, but MGs can fire without fear of running out of ammo. We experimented during development with ammo limits and overheating on MGs, and found it was not fun and not that important (since fighters realistically seldom fly alone outside a squadron, and you control the whole squadron(s)). The bomb limit was a key (and realistic) tactical concern, so we focused on that.
3. No. You control the whole unit so that takes priority. Again, we experimented with it during development and found that the gunner spent a lot of time waiting to see anything, and little time shooting. We felt we should start out by getting the whole unit control right first.
4. You can pilot for take-off and landing. It takes a lot of skill to land, in part because you have to make sure you approach the CV from the correct end.
Are the enemy's units always on the tactical map or do you have to see them first? If they are, does that include submerged submarines?
You have to see them first. Subs are hard to spot, and even once seen can dive deep and regain their concealed status. A favored tactic among the dev team is to trail in the wake of a Cruiser or Battleship and pop up for a spread of torpedoes as soon as they are engaged with something else. It feels a bit like ganking in WoW. Some units like Destroyers have sonar to spot subs. Recon planes have a wide spotting area so can be useful to sweep the map for sneaking enemy.
Will you be able to use any other forms of 'defense' around a land base? (I.E. deployable mines(anti sub/anti ship),submarine netting, barrage balloons, ect)
You don’t control any land based weaponry.
In the Lombok Strait videos there is alot of water splashing up on teh screen from the plain flying to low and shells hitting the water near your camera. Great water effect BTW. If a plane takes too much damage will oil splash the screen?
I’m not sure you’ll be able to tell with all the smoke bellowing out of the plane ;)

Thanks for clearing some of that up first of all,I did read that we can not control any land based weps, but will there be built in defenses aside from AA/shore batteries?
If so,Im guessing they will be 'static' and by that I mean set in one place over and over again? If this is the case I hope that the maps can be modded to change the defensive placements.
I think that there should be at least some change in certain objects so it wont be so Monty Hall where you know the range and placements for everything,IMHO this will greatly reduce the replay ability of this game.

Yeah they are all static. I agree that it would be nice if the player who has conquered the island could place the AA-guns anywhere he wants.

what do you mean by "strategic mode"?
also i would guess that they don't have a cockpit view because if they did they would have to design a different cockpit for every plane, also third person gives you better awareness of what is happening around you, so it could help you because you have to control all of your units in the battle, and that would be made easier if you could see more of what is around you,

Can ships ram/collide with others? Think about it, your ship is severely damaged, the fleet has been all but destroyed, you have been playing this same mission over and over again. The mission is to destroy the enemy flagship. Your ship still has engines and minimal weapons, so with your last effort you plot a collision course towards the enemy ship and BAM that enemy aircraft carrier was no match for a battleship charging at full speed. Kind of makes sense or did I just write all that for nothing?

01-09-2007, 07:30 PM
Well, with the nature of the game...my guess would be you just drop them, and when they come into proximity with any submerged objects they explode. Setting the depth would be a bit complicated for the manner of play. As far as I know this is supposed to be an RTS/Action game, leaning more towards action. I'm pretty sure they aren't going for a battle simulator type of game.

I am thinking this as well but then it makes sub hunting 10x easier as all you will have to do is drop charges. I figure thats the tradeoff for hiding from radar is that subs take dmg, but if seaplanes are going to be able to spot them unless dully submerged its just a matter of lobbing a few charges down. Of course I guess it all depends on their actual sinking rate and wether a sub is deep enough and fast enough so that when it does explode at the same depth they will be out of the radius.
I just think they need to let us play so we will stop asking questions..:)

I heard of "no air formations":
this can be valid for a fighter unit scrambling,
not for a bomber force searchingh for enemy ships or land targets.
Most of single engine carrier-bombers
(D3A1, B5N2,Devastator,Avenger,Dauntless(after have two))
and japanese bombers( G3M2, G4M1, Ki21)
have only a tail gun, this can be devastanting
if used in formation, otherwise useless.
Formation have to keep as long as possible
before bombing or torpedo run.
"unlimited ammunitions"?
I hope this can be only a choice for rookie players.
At Midway Zero Cap shot down 17 of 27 of the first wave
of US planes from Midway and take 35 over 41 Devastators.
A6M2 is armed with two 7.7 mg and two 20 mm cannon.
With a rpm of 800 and 450 respectively and magazines of 600 and 60 rounds,
make 46 sec of fire for Mg and only 8 sec for cannons.
Usually japanese zero pilots determine range with MG and use
cannon to shot down the best protected allied aircrafts.
Well,Japanese Cap is not more then 60 strong:
also if Dauntless strike was later and Zeros have time to gain height
after destroy TB, how many bullets left to counter it?
I think DC can work properly also if they
explode only at contact, but please not
unlimited amm.
(jap destroyers have not more then 18 DC abroad)
rgr, game ends at Midway and so why is CL Cleveland
present in the database and why we have not dutch
submarines and destroyers?

Dear Keir,
why is the game without cockpit view?
I know it is non simulation game, but a first person view for planes are more intensive gameplay you know?

there are plane formations, i have seen them in videos, but unlike ships, you can't customize the formations, so you can't chose where in the formation planes go
and there is unlimited ammo for ship artillery and plane machine guns, i am not sure what else has unlimited ammo, but i know that you have a limited number of torpedoes and bombs, there may be other things with limited ammo, but those 2 are the only ones i am sure of

In the walk thru, didn't the guy say that now that the bombers and torp. planes had dropped thier bombs, they could be used as fighters? What im getting at here is that hes impling that u do not have unlimited bombs.. one bomb or torp per plane, that all u get.. but in the end he also states that u can switch to teh other two B-51 bombers and try again...

yes, you can hide, if you look at the walk through, a lot of the map was darker then the parts where your ships were, the dark parts are what you can't see, enemy ships only show up on the tactical map if they are within visual range of one of your units,

Im pretty sure one player gets a fleet of ships, and another player gets the planes. somewhere along those lines. Keir can tell you exactly how it works.
Each multiplayer map will have a pre determined number of ships/aircraft which vary in class. The levels will always play out with this number of ships/aircraft no matter how many human players are in the session. So in a 1v1 game a player will have control of an entire fleet. Where as in a 4v4 game, they may only have 2 units under their control.

it could be a problem if you have to sneak past enemy ships to hit your target, because then you would have to be underwater to get past their patrols, hit your target, and still be underwater to get out alive, that could take a while, and you don't want to surface right where the enemy can see (and shoot) you to get air

Also when your sub goes to the max depth is it safe from depth charges and and can the recon planes see the sub only when it is surfaced or when it is close to the surface so will the water be slightly translucent i mean

Good question, although i dont think i would need to worry about that, just keep your sub on top until you engage and enemy and dive then blow them out the water
This could also be a problem if the enemy has aircraft nearby.

don't think that there is 1st person view, and also they couldn't do it with things like ships AA guns because you control all the AA guns on the ship at once, so you can't go 1st person because which gun would it go to? some guns can't see some places (ex the other side of the ship) so if you went 1st person for a gun, you wouldn't be able to see everything

Hey i was just thinking about this, if you do certain objectives etc, are the "effects" carried onto the next level.
For example, If you had an optional objective of protecting a carrier during your main objective, and you lost it, would it affect the next mission? such as you wont have a carrier. ( That would be a bit drastic but its and example
Also for the ending, can there also be different endings for the game, we all know how each player will have different actions during missions, im not saying personally its a good idea, but i like games that have that kind of option.

Just a question but lets say your ship is under attack and the ship thats attacking it gets sunk, will your ship now slowly repair? If the answer is no then i think that id be a good idea. i know its a little late now seeing how close it is to release date but it makes sence seeing how crews had time to patch tings up and clamp pipes, put out fires, etc.
Also going along with the whole ship being able to be repaired, if the ship is on fire or has a hole from a torp will it slowly lose health until the crews repair the ship . . .

not sure if the repairs improve the life bar of the ship but you can get turrets/engines operational again
princecaspian4
01-13-2007, 12:55 PM
ya, you can fix some things like turrets, and have damage crews put out fires, and work the pumps, but you must decide what the damage crews fix, if you don't they will just spread out equally, but i don't think that your ship's main health would go up, because you wouldn't really be able to repair things like hull damage (which i would expect is the main health bar) at sea,

Sciurida
01-13-2007, 01:39 PM
i don't think you'll have drydocks because the battles are mainly fought on the ocean, and sometimes you have an island, but it wouldn't be fair if one player had drydocks and the other one has none, that would afcourse change if both the players have an island, but that's not really realistic in the pacific war.... at least that's my view on the war on the pacific, maybe someone can change that view, but i think i'm right because there were mainly battles for this islands.....
Crazy Nut BE
01-13-2007, 01:42 PM
Well if I remember correctly, there is one game type where you have to get your carrier to the enemy's island and make sure he doesn't get his carrier to yours. So you would both have an island in that gametype.
princecaspian4
01-13-2007, 02:41 PM
i am not sure if you could lose something as important as a carrier, in real life something like that could change the course of the war, also i have read that in some missions some of your objectives are to not let some ship sink (and i think that if that ship does sink, you fail the mission), but it could work when dealing with smaller ships
HaloGunner117
01-13-2007, 02:43 PM
Maybe like if you kept your cruisers or PT boats alive but carriers are a little bit more vital. I think that you will usually lose the game if your carrier is lost.

i know what your talking about, but it is getting your landing craft (i think you actually have a landing fleet) to the enemies island, not your carrier,
but in some maps one team will have an island and the other won't, also to have your ship go to dry dock in the game would take to long, and not all maps would be able to have dry docks

Yes, the ships do repair themselves. Watch the Tulagi video. The ship damage meter steadily drops due to deck fires and taking on water. Once the repair crews get things under control and repairs are made, the drop stops and the damage meter improves (not all the way, but some).

I ask this question only because of the terrible job that Bethesda soft and Mad Doc did on Star Trek Legacy
which was they used the Starfleet command 3 engine which the AI always trys to get on your tail so you get these circling furball dogfights(dog fighting with capital ships just does not seem right to me)
the 360 controller buttons where assigned very awkward keyboard commands that could not be remapped
while it is 3d space that you fly in you cannot do a barrel roll or a loop
the manual gives no discriptions of the individual ships(the prima guide gives very vague weapon arcs and nothing on different weapon systemes other than phasers are better the closer you are and are good against shields where torps are good against the hull limited ammo and are limited to forward or aft arcs
and the multiplayer is almost non exsistant
what the game needs in horsepower does not jibe with what it does(speculation that it has memory leaks)
both of these games are fleet games that are on the PC and 360 where you jump from ship to ship(planes included)
basically BS and MD screwed STL up big time
what can you tell me that Eidos has done differently than BS and MD other than coming out after xmas
I will say that your AI at least will follow orders when your not around or engage the enemy should they show up

Ok here is a scenario I thought of today:
You have one ship being attacked from two different sides, lets say planes from the East and a destroyer from West. If you are in control of the ship and are manning the AA guns and you decide to fire at the planes comming in from the East will the AI take control of the ships main guns and fire them at the destroyer comming from the West and vice versa?
LT ROBERT COLE
01-13-2007, 08:31 PM

If that is true than I think that this is going to be an expoitable part of the game during Mutiplayer matches. All you will have to do is keeps you target occupied with more than one attacker. Now I know that attacking from different angles is a no brainer but to disable an entire ships weapon systems other than the one you are controlling is a serious disadvantage. You might just do better controlling eveything from the command view. Does the same thing happen to fully AI controlled ships because during the videos the ships are firing both main and AA guns?

it doesn't disable everything, you only control one weapon system, all the others are controlled by AI (although i don't think the computer will be able to fire torpedoes because you don't have an unlimited amount of them (at least i would hope that the computer couldn't fire off your torps, i wouldn't want the computer wasting my torpedoes)

Good so you could be engaging a Destroyer with your main guns and the AI will man the AA if needed. Also the AI will have to be able to fire torpedoes or else AI controlled subs would be very useless.

Battlestations midway looks like it has the potential to go much further i.e in the form of follow ons the 'great marrianas turkey shoot' was a great if not one sided battle latter on in the war as were other naval confrontations after midway - are there currently any plans to make more installments? a third person perspective moving around on ship would be awesome especially as zeroes fly overhead ! the current game looks cool though I cant tell you how long i have been waiting for a game like this ! probably since the age of 10 - being the first time I watched the film battle of midway

Hey guys I've read a number of previous pages and I tried searching for an answer but I read a post awhile back that there's no clan support on XBox Live. If this isn't true then I apologize for the rant but if it is then I have to ask you Devs how you could make a tactical multiplayer game with no squad support?!? People online Want to Play with their Friends, plain and simple. If you make it pain in the butt to hook up with friends, or no leaderboard stats or matchmaking or clanmatches / challenges, then a lot of people are going to throw the game away. Honestly for most if not all the people I play with on XBox Live, their decision to buy a game instead of renting rests with strong multiplayer support...I can't believe that some developers haven't caught on yet that people want to play with their friends against groups of other people with their friends...
If I'm wrong then I'm sorry. If I'm accurate then WAKE UP :mad2:

Can you tell me if these missions are similar to skirmish matches like, for exemple, in "Company of heroes" game, where you can play in multiplayer maps vs AI using slots? In this option yo can choose one of the two factions (Axis or Allies in CoH). This is a good training for multiplayer matches and a very funny way to play. I hope I will can make it in "Battlestation Midway" game too.

Im not sure if this was answered, I hate the serach engine for Eidos forums, are guest going to be allowed? Like i got my copy and my friend comes over. He gets one of the 4 slots for online and i another. I see not not many games allow that.. GRAW does..
Thanks,

I think this is an important question.. i don't play gears online beacuse it does not allow quests.. SW battlefront does and it makes the game more interensting

Is CO-OP Multiplayer totaly out of the question or is it something that you will patch in later?
Im would be very interesting for me if the game supported CO-OP playability in Multiplayer mode

is about the AI in the release version, not the demo.
Can we coop against the AI in the full version of the game? My friend lives a ways away from me and I wondered if we could both choose US and the AI would play the Japanese in a game online?
Anyone confirm if this is possible?

Played the demo last night several times and the following came to mind:
It would be great to save a multiplayer game that you didn't have time to finish.
Let's say you and a buddy are playing against each other in a 1 v 1 battle (or playing against another team of friends 2 v 2) and can't complete it for some reason. It would be nice if it was possible to save the file (whether it requires both parties to save it, or just one person) and then complete the battle later. The file would contain the vital information necessary to start the battle from the point at which it was suspended (damage to buildings and units, points earned, etc.) When the combatants wish to finish it, one person could load the file, create a private match and invite the other combatant(s).
Is this doable? What do others think of the idea?

Thanks Turtle55555.
That's exactly what led me to think about it, and we're only playing on a tiny map now - imagine what'll happen with bigger maps involving more strategic thinking and execution.
I'm really excited about the prospects for the game, and the ability to save a MP match in progress would be icing on the cake.

Well, first off, let me say what a great time I had playing the demo last nite. Well done.
Now, is there any "stat tracking" system in place? Like, how many battleships I destroyed, etc. And, at the end of a match, I see a score.. last nite I had around 4,000. What does that consist of?
Thanks in advance.

Hey,
My Question is why is the KGV working for the USN when she is a British ship and i think a bad match up to the Yamato.
Something like the USS Iowa (BB-61) or USS Wisconsin (BB64) they are from the USN and should compare well to The Yamato. Also the USN Believed the Yamato was the Greatest ship at the time and they underwent plans for the USS Montana with would defeat the Yamato.

why they did not include the south Dakota or North Carolina classes since they where in service at that time beats me
KGV and Renown where in theater at that time they both got sunk just after the attack on Pearl harbor
but they are our allies
actually the south Dakota is a match for the Yamato with better fire control, damage control and radar

Is go to the map screen, find the unit YOU control and want to give, select this unit by clicking down (pushing down NOT moving right to left or up and down) on the thumbstick, and a list will come up showing the eligible players who can recieve a unit. Dpad up and down to your selection and then hit A.
I know this works because I have showed a lot of players online how to do this and they have been able to give me units. Hope that helps.

From what i understand:
1) Go to www.battlestations.net/home they have a sorta like there and also there are more ships, planes and subs to come from what we understand.
2) Well there will be more then one map. i'm guessing about 10 - 15 or so but i'm just guessing, Also did you say for the USS Bogue to Escort the IJN Ise?
3) No Scouts this aint Navy Field :P

Oh and about the scout idea i dont mean they SCOUT i mean for death charge equip scouts for subs on the bbs and cas would be a cool idea.
Also i see the iowa in a couple trailers (Right after the "this is your war" slogan) will the be in the game too because i dont see it on the list.

Here's a good question.
If i wanted to send 9 dive bombers to 1 target can i not just up the number in the first slot to 9 and have the other 2 slots free? I have tried before now but always ended up launching 3 sets of 3 and having to make waypionts for all 3 flights. If it is not possible to up the numbers in each slot in the demo, will it be possible in the game? The carriers say there is a total of 12 aircraft aswell but you can only get 9, did they intentionally do this to even it up as the airfields only have 9 planes each?
ps
I know i have posted this in another thread but got no respose.

well i suppose andy, it could be possible, but i would know, the devs or keir would need to confirm it or not. I see your point, but flying in the middle with 4 planes in each side would be awesome i think, its good for defending against bombers and bombing one target.
I just thought of something, for dive bombing, ill fly over the target go straight up and stall the engine, then backflip (roll) over and full throttle straight to the deck WOOHOO

I downloaded this demo and soon after playing it, memories of me playing Janes Fleet Command on my Windows 98 computer rushing back to me.
Therefore EIDOS i think a wonderful game would be if you made a game that had the best of both Janes Fleet Command and Battlestations Midway!!!!!
Basically Battlestations: Modern Warfare or something like that.
Off the top of my head I would change the map from a map to a sort of real time satellite view instead of a paper type map.
And just update all the ships and war equipment to 2007 war equipment.

Does anyone know if there will be Co-op story missions? I was playing the demo, and two of my team members quit the game. It was so hectic trying to control both shipyards and carriers, it was fun but hard to keep track of everything. I am a great player at this demo, I havent lost yet and I avg over 6000 points every match. I am just really interested in seeing atleast 2 player co-op in this game.
So if anyone or the dev. have information on if there is co-op play let me know.

Keir or member of development team
I understand that the amount of planes, ships & subs are limited
which is a good idea.
Only my question, thought is this?
Once a base or carrier is damaged then this reflects on the life
of the ship leaving that station too.
Most things inside a bombed buildings become damaged. This will aid
team work hitting objectives. Bombing targets effected output
in the second world war as like other war, even modern warfare is the same.

hello all just a few questions fer the devs, ive played the demo and was wondering about some of the games intricasies
(1) if the sub can go below sonar location y cant the planes do the same with radar, wouldnt it make sense to have the same mechanics fer planes
(2) once the sub is out of torps there seems to b no way to re arm it...is there any way to get it re armed or is that something that has been changed within the full version of the game
(3) when setting up a game online will we be able to close player slots so that ppl joining will only b able to go to one side....or is there only the ability to assign private slots
(4) will there be clan support within the multiplayer
(5) will there be a lot of downloadable content available for this game in the form of maps armaments ships plains subs etc
(6) will there be unlockable content in single/multiplayer modes
(7) will we be able to edit airplane squad sizes or will the max be 3 to a squad
(8)will there b a limit plased on the superships ie ships larger than the kongo and renown class or will they b assigned like the aircraft carriers
(9) will we be able to set the number of ships/planes so that the ammounts are lower so there are less reinforcments or will those be preset
all answers would be greatly apreciated thnx

I know there was question about co-op and bot play, etc...
But a video was released to the Xbox Live Marketplace, I believe it was the multiplayer video, that during one screen, said "8 Person Co-op". Now given that I've heard there is no co-op, and the video clearly said co-op, was this just a poor choice of words in the video, or is co-operative play actually being implemented?

There is NO leveling system in this gam (THANK GOD) and i am 99.9% sure u can use every ship, plane, and aircraft u see in the game.

Not to give too much away, but will the Midway battle be historically accurate?
3 U.S. carriers and an airfield vs. 4 Japanese carriers?
That would be a lot to handle at one time, but it would be challenging and fun...

Verified the video this morning....
The XBL marketplace has a multiplayer video up for Battlestations that at one point in the video shows 8 screens (as if from 8 different players).
Across the video in big white letters it says "8 person co-op battles".
Can the dev/community team please clarify if this was just poor wording or if it does indeed mean what I hope it means?

My question is this, why the choice to go with the F4F Wildcat, when it had one of the worst enemy kill ratios of any aircraft in the pacific theater? We lost 59 Wildcats before even one enemy aircraft was shot down by an F4F. The Hellcat would have been a far better choice, or my personal favorite, the infamous F4U Corsair, flown by most of the legendary aces of the pacific theater (including, for those of you who didn't know, Maj. Pappy Boyington and his Black Sheep Squadron). If the choice was one made on a timeline basis, I can understand that. But personally, the Wildcat seems to be a very poor choice for an allied aircraft. It's also one of the most ungainly looking things to take to the skies during war, again, in my opinion.
I would be much more likely to purchase multiple copies of BS:M if there were additional aircraft, either included in the launch release, or as a downloadable addition later, or even in an expansion/booster pack. Just as long as we're not stuck with the worst allied fighter of the theater. Too many developers forget how much impact downloadable content has on the replayability of a game. I think it makes all the difference between a game collecting dust on a shelf or being replaced time and again because the cd wore out due to overuse.
Give us gamers a reason to keep playing and we won't stop!! :nut:

Because the Wildcat was the USN carrier-borne fighter in the period from Pearl to Midway. The F4U and Hellcat didn't come in until later.
The thing to remember is that the game's period is early war; the multiplayer missions play faster and looser with the chronology, but use the same pool of models as the single player game.
Anyway, cheer up about the F4F. You could be flying an F2A...

yes it is a time line thing
also you should note that the japanese pilots had been on a wartime footing for at least 3 yrs BEFORE Pearl Harbor
and had developed a set of tactics that fit their style AND aircraft and it worked for them until we came up with better tactics(thatch weave and others) that complemented OUR style of combat and aircraft
from the list of vehicles given Edios used only vessels that where in theater up to midway
since both the north carolina and south dakota class BB's where in service but not in theater till the 2nd battle of savo island

Copy that. I totally understand now. I guess my real question was that, what's the timeline. Does the timeline advance then? It would be cool to advance through the years, unlocking new ships/aircraft/etc as you went. Just a thought heh.
Thanks for the info, that helps me greatly. As for the F2A, we do have to fly it, it is on the list  LOL
I've flown them all many times, I flew Microsoft's Combat Flight Sim for years and years. I'm looking forward to not having so much to worry about while flying heheh. And as for japanese tactics, you bet they were war hardened. A few years in the chinese theater made for that. I'll be studying up once again on the AVG's tactics.

I also have a question....
I was watching one of the trailers on xbl market place and i noticed that the movie (called naval powers or somethin like that and is the gameplay trailer number 3 if you watch the videos from the site) said that in 1945 it took about 300 planes to take destroy the ship. (I know that this is probably a challenge mission)
Will we have airplanes that came from 1945 to take it out????

Or maybe you can load AA guns into transport planes and parachutte drop a AA turret somewhere on the shores/Island?

None of the planes or ships in the demo have limited fuel, and guns all have unlimited ammo (including airplanes!) Ships DO have limited torpedos, and planes need to rearm after dropping their bombs. But there's no material limit to the armament, only to the vehicles carrying said armament.
Really in a single battle fuel and ammo wasn't a concern. You had enough ammo and fuel to fight in a single engagment. Fuel and ammo would come into play over several engagments. Since that's beyond the scope of this game, I think it's appropriate that there be no 'resource' centers that need to be protected or destroied. In the course of a single battle, it doesn't matter if that fuel or ammo dump is destroied. You're not going to dock your ship and gas up in the middle of a fight.
I wouldn't have minded seeing limited ammo for planes where similar to dropping their bombs they had to fly back to base to load their guns, but for gameplay purposes I can see why they did it the way they did.

3. What would you like to include if their was a sequel?
4. Have you given any thoughts to doing a modern era naval warfare game?
5. How was this game conceived?
6. How do you think the Japanese will receive this game?
7. What was the most difficult thing to overcome during development of this game?
8. How are you utilizing the Xbox 360's triple core Power PC processors?

What is the word on clan support? Early reviews (IGN) seem to indicate that there is no clan support in the game at this time. Is that true? If so, are there plans to add clan support in a future update?
Because this is such a team-focused game, it will be very disappointing if nothing is done to help the clans that will be popping up.
Here's what I would like to see:
1) Clan Tags: that could be added to the front of your Gamertag when playing Battlestations. They could also be added to the front of games that you host.
2) Clan ranking: Clans with the best winning percentage with a certain number of matches played. (i.e. must have 500 matches to be ranked)
3) Clan challenge ladder: You can challenge clans 50 spots above you and must defend your spot to those 50 below
4) Clan matchmaking: quick matches that are set up between clans of similar skill/experience
Just a few ideas. I have high hopes for this game and hope that the developers really work to build the community/clan aspect of the game.

You receive the joy of having fun for an hour or so fighting it out with fellow gamers.
Why must everything have some sort of rank/level system? Games with ranks/level systems to multiplayer detract from the point of multiplayer. Who cares if someone is Lt. or Major... or Colonel... etc.... Rainbow 6: Vegas had a rank system.... all it did was force people to play matches specifically with the goal of ranking up in mind rather than having fun.
Will there be ability to see other players ping. That would be really useful ability for host, making sure that game wont be bad cuz of leavers and laggers. And ability to join chat channels and "whisp" to mates so you dont have to find you'r mates by joining every1 game, and you could invite you'r mate to same game where you are if that isnt full, that would be so cool. I enjoyed playing Pc-demo but laggers ussually ruins game by leaving cause they have so high ping and better server browser would be cool too, but so what i will buy full game, this is best game for year. Good job.

Will putting your repair men on Weapons or Maneuvor help in any way with reload times or anything other than repairing? Also how about if you take damage having a chance at losing some of your repair people to casualties, maybe start with 4 instead of 3, add new strategy to that aspect of game. Also, I always put my men onto where I expect to be attacked (Water against Subs, Fire against Planes) before I'm attacked, good way to minimize damage, if, however doing that increased the chances of one of my repairers of being killed, be a reason to return them to all stations every once and a while.

Why didn't you give us a map editor or mod tools. Also The MP mode has some problems when you are winning and the other player leaves you still get a loss? That is not so nice.

Weapon repair only speeds up the time it takes to repair damage to weapons, it doesn't effect reload speeds.

I still can't believe you did not include this in the first place. What game does not have this option?.. its stuped, I mean really .. come on,, what were you thinking?. All I want when I get home from work is to sit down at my computer for alittle while and play a great Battle station game. BUT problem is I dont have time to dedicate to an online battle, and ALL I really want to do is fool around and check out all the ships and just set up my own battles VS the computer where I can just pratice relax and have FUN!

Maybe this needs to be added tp SP mode.

Don't nessesarally want to just do a gun battle with ship after ship or plane after plane, but mabee a simple mission editor where you select you side, the map and the units for both sides and then when you do battle the 2 sides start at opposite ends of the map!

I'd really like to see dynamic island chain maps with a mission editor.
A chain of 8 islands, 4 Japanese held and 4 American. Each island then has both an INACTIVE Airfield and INACTIVE shipyard.
At the mission screen a player choses a player slot. Once he choses a player slot he has the ability to choose units, airfields, and shipyards bought with a point total. Their Purchases would then be hidden from the opposite side, and they could position his units across a "Friendly territory barrier".
When the game starts each side is clueless as to what the opposite side really has and the fog of war is in full effect. Recon, teamwork and tactics become very important as no longer is anything for sure.
Did they buy subs? Is there a Battleship lurking about? Carriers? Is that airfield up ahead abandoned, or is it full of aircraft?
This would allow for a very dynamic game where each game would play out drastically different. It also allows players to take more control of their role and to have units they enjoy more.

I could make a comment about them holding them back and selling them at a later date as an add on disc.
3 or 4 mp maps for £14.99. (roughly $25.00 us)
But i wouldn't do that i'm not that cruel
Please do not think i'm being serious!

Why not make the game online & offline play. that way people can play offline too learn the game before going online too play with other's.

I'm not sure if I am reading this right. There is SP and MP available or are you talking about something along the lines of split screen?
