Hi there,

Just discovered that there are 2 different English versions of Thief 3: US version and UK. Some internet sellers emphasise which one they are selling.

QUESTION:
1. Why the heck is there a UK version?! Was the US version not British enough for England or are there deeper reasons I cannot fathom? :nut:
2. Is there any reason to prefer one version over the other since they are both English language versions?

Any suggestions are most welcome - since I just found out that I ordered the US full version of the game - after playing the UK demo, which worked just fine on my US laptop.

Thanks
Saftsack.

If you're buying the Xbox version, one is NTSC and the other is PAL.

There are DIFFERENT PC/Windows XP versions on sale (Amazon/E-bay):

1. the "UK version" for winXP
2. the "US version" for winXP

What the heck is that all about?! :nut:
My question is:
1. Why ???!!! I thought that at least games and computers were compatible with the UK
2. If so: what's the difference? Is there a difference in performance or compatibility with US or UK PCs?

The video broadcast format for the UK and others is different than the US.

Your DVD drives also read a "region" (there are 5 in the world) and don't allow you to run or read versions from a different area.

So, the graphic cards as well as the DVD player may have different operating software. Ergo: two versions.

I've noticed that if I go to the Video card manufacturers site, they always ask you to pick an area (UK, US, Japan, China etc) and where you bought your card, or got your system.

In the US version, a guard might say something like "Howdy partner! I just a thief goin' up them thar stairs!"

In the UK version it would be "Awight guv'nor, I just saw a scoundrel goin' up the apples and pears!"

DVD software does not use the regioning information in DVD drives. That is purely for DVD video.

There are often several reasons as to why there are UK and US versions, despite them both being English.

In the UK DVD drives are much more prevelant in our computers than the USA, so we tend to get a lot more games on DVD than you do.

In addition the UK game is likely to be produced and pressed in Europe and usually contains the additional languages too, such as German, French, Italian and Spanish.
It is more cost-effective to produce a single DVD containing 5 languages in Europe than it is to produce one tailored to each country and then ship a buttload of american-edition games over.

Plus our manual is nicer ;)

I detail the differences between the Thief III UK and USA version in this thread at TTLG (http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=84766) as I purchased both editions.
