Hello, I recently bought Thief I and II budget. Sold-Out Software dual set.

Unfortunately, even though I can install both fine, I can't get the running. Every time I do, I get this error message:

ERROR: buff len of 80 exceeded by 86:
intro.avi

It's obviously the cinemas which are causing a problem, even though I installed the codec that came with the names. I kind of doubt I'll have problems afterwards, but this is the main problem and I have no idea what to do, though I've spent the past couple of days trying to hunt down answers on Google.

Any help, please?

The length of the path name for each file cannot exceed more than 80 characters (It starts counting at your drive letter). Yours is 86. God knows where you've installed it :D
Maybe:
c:\documents and settings\my games\my good games\my good games beginning with T\my good games beginning with T and made by LGS\Thief2\

Uninstall the game and rienstall it somewhere else, like c:\games\Thief

That did the job: I had it installed in My Documents beforehand. Thank you.

But now I'm facing another problem, which I also get with games like System Shock 2: I can play the game fine for a few moments, possibly minutes, but then it freezes and crashes quite suddenly for no apparent reason. No errors listed or anything of the sort, and on occassion, I may have to reboot it.

If you have a P4 or a AMD dual core CPU, you need to disable one of the cores and run as a "single" processor.

I think this: http://www16.brinkster.com/salvage/thief/darkengine.htm
is a better solution because you only have to do it once per install.
