kazastan magnetic gun problem

After I power up the core and proceed to the room with the gun, it does not seem to work, the fire button only shoots a mild charge that can't reach the gards on the other side, I can only blow up the barrels, can't throw them or pull out the boxes like the walkthroughs are saying. Can anybody help me? I am playing on PC.

u can use the gun to pick up barrels and throw them at the guards over the way, use the g and h keys to do this
