Curmudgeon alert...

I'm done ****ing around with TDS. The inventory/use issue I've had from the beginning is just becoming too intrusive to even attempt to enjoy the game. I've reset my controls to default, customized to the hilt again and again and still can't get everything to work to my satisfaction. Using inventory, weapons, and objects in the environment is just too damn difficult. It was all easy as pie in the first 2 games, now I have to stop, think, hunt/peck keys and mouse buttons and I still don't always get what I want. Maybe the game is buggy. I went on a killing spree last night (still hung in mission 2, so I became angry) then needed health and couldn't use any of the 6 potions I had....grrr.

To quote my 6 year old who has patiently monitored my (lack of) progress from his co-pilot's chair beside my computer, his opinion last night was simple - "This is too stupid, let's play the Thief that's fun."

An official "uninstall party" happens tonight after work - with a pitcher of martinis; you all are welcome to attend. ;)

This at least allows me to go back and catch up on the FMs for the "fun" Thief games. :)

I empathize with you and shall, in spirit, join you in hoisting some spirits to drown the spirit of unease caused by the ill-spirits that prevented you from getting fully into the spirit of TDS.

You won't really miss a lot except the mission "The Cradle" which is exceptional.

Sorry I can't offer any suggestions as I have had little or no problem with the controls or the game on either of my systems (W-98 and XP).

But for a comfortable change of pace, PM me your new Snail Mail, and I'll send you a copy of the install CD for T2X. You should enjoy that one. Think midway between TDP and TMA for texture and AI, and "The City" for terrain.

Thanks to you both....PM has been sent, uninstall party and spirit hoisting has begun. And I will keep the game handy for when NewHorizon's mod becomes available and can be used on the TDS FMs.

That potential improvement somewhat has me pumped, as the graphics for this game are much improved from the first 2 (duh), so maybe more Thief-ish feeling and handling FMs might make me more friendly overall to this installment. :)

And tBM hit it - I just wasn't in the spirit anyway, so if this had worked I probably would have just found something else to throw a tantrum over. ;)

And I thought they made the game easier to play. :P

Drat, and I missed the party :(. That's what I get for leaving the 'puter off for a couple of days.

I feel your pain clayman. I never could get used to the controls either.

You can customise the controls.

Have you tried the Minimalist Project?
That makes things look a lot like the first two games, and one of the difficulty settings is similar to TDS's original 'Expert' mode, but there isn't that awful '80% Loot' goal, so if you have 78% when you complete your main goal, you don't have to spend another half hour looking for a little gold ring or somehting.

Thanks BA ;)

Too late R Soul - I am now comfortably in my element with some little T2 thing called "Bafford's Last Stand".... :)

But of course, what are friends for. Play the game again, when you are ready. I sure as hell wouldn't let it beat me.

It does not have the same flavor as it predicesors, no, but, it is worth going through again. You should play the cradle. I know you have read that enough.

To hear Stephens voice again. Oh yeah........
