View Full Version : Disc not Recognized

I have just bought a copy of Deus Ex Invisible War from a local legitimate games retailer in the UK [it is the PC Gamer Edition if that matters], have just removed the cellophane, and inserted it into my DVD drive [which also happens to be a DVD rewriter drive]. The busy light flashes and I get some wierd noises, but nothing actually happens. The Deus Ex logo does not appear next to the icon for the drive in My Computer, it just isn't recognized by my machine. I have read that some other user's have had problems due to copying software; I have no software for copying apart from what came with my computer when I bought it from a chain retailer. so certainly nothing inappropriate. My system specs are well above and beyond what this game is asking for, and even if they wern't it would surely still load the menu or something. Apart from the fact that due to bad luck I have purchased a faulty disc, could anybody please give me a reason for this that doesn't involve me going back to the shop and demanding my money back? Are there any technical problems that could cause my system not to even load up the disc?
Thanking you in advance for any assistance you could give.

As you say, it's probably a faulty disk. The best option is to get a replacement.

UPDATE: Suspecting the disc was at fault, I was all ready to take it back to the shop with the receipt etc. but then thought of something. I have an older computer which is not used very often which does not have the specs to support a game such as Deus Ex IW, which is why the idea never occurred to me before, but it actually has a DVD-ROM drive. I knew it would not run Deus Ex but thought I should try it just to see if the disc was at fault. To my astonishment, it loaded up the menu and started preparing for installation. Hence it is NOT the disc, although this is still the only explanation that would account for my drive not recognising the disc. Anybody think of anything else?

Well your DVD drive may be slightly faulty, mine has a habit of refusing to read one CD for ages and then if I try another CD and then put the first one back in it works fine. Have you had trouble with any other CDs?

I took the advice posted and tried out numerous CD's and DVD's [sadly I dont have any other games which combine the two - so I couldn't test out another game which was also a DVD-ROM] but every other disc I tried worked fine. I just don't get it.
