in SR2 was no fatal paradox. History will not allow the introduction of a paradox. If it was fatal, the irritant would be removed.

It was a change of time, by forcing raziel to be absorbed in the blade for a future time.

and when Kain saves Raziel from the sword, Kain recieves a vision of the Hylden and thus begins Defiance that was the Paradox, they walked in the hyldens trap.

The end of SR2 was not a fatal paradox. Kain was afraid that he and Raziel changed history too much and they would be erased but luckily he was wrong. He gets new memories of things that happened now that Raziel was spared from the Reaver. One of these flash-backs is BO2. Then Defiance picks up where SR2 left off. Kain has just saved Raziel from the Reaver and now he's trying to find Raziel. Meanwhile, Raziel is held captive by the Elder God until the time when BO1 is taking place.

it seems the Elder God was holding raziel back from his true destiny and he was arrogant in underestamating Kain and Raziel.
