How Do I?

Playing as Russia, how do I start diplomatic relations with say France or Britain, etc. Those countries are all in the part of the map that I guess Russsia didn't know exsited in the late 1700's as it is in a fog. I guess you have to research something to see the whole map. I am currently researching second era stuff and wanted to form an alliance against Austria, but can't seem to select any of those countries that are in the fog. Just something I find a little weird, like not being to build ships right away, I mean this is starting in the late 1700's right? Any help or answers would be appreciated. Thanks

Trade (lol forgotten how to spell Beauru's) in the provinces nearest to them that you can see will reveal alot more. Once you have contact you can also build consulates etc but their not really worth it unless you have a serious chance to beat other's to the post when considering how much they like you and may 'Peacefully Annexe'. Ships will also help alot maybe more so.

Thanks. Currently I am working my way through the diplomacy stuff, is a pretty good game in that sense. Just wish the battles would get fixed. We need bigger numbers of men! Which leads me to another question. How do I increase my population income? I have built hospitals where I can, and by annexing Sweden and Egypt my poulation income is up some, but still a real bottle neck when trying to amass an army an the myriad other things that I need warm bodies for! Thanks again.
