Are third age advancements supposed to take forever to reaserch? Like trade unions take 30 turns? ANy help would be nice. :)

I think they are supposed to take that long. Many of them have a strong impact on gameplay, though, and are well worth the effort.

Yeah, they are I think. Build Schools, it really helps. Doing one of the research-oriented quests can help too.
