Assertion Error

Hi, can anyone please help me with this? I have tried to install the game and it works but as soon as I go to load anything it crashes to the desktop with the following error:

Assertion failed:ti[File:d:\prj\Clean\D3DDrv\Src\Direct3D7.cpp][Line:1724]

I am running Win 98, AMD-K6(tm) 3D Processor, 128MB DDR, DirectX 9.0c

Please help as I would really like to play this game!
