Yeah, well. Not all of them, you know. The very first monkey in TRIII (the one on the horizontal tree-trunk) is leaving you alone and the second one (who grabs the little health pack if you're not fast enough) too, but there are monkeys who chase you and truly scratch your legs and if you stand still too long you'll see the health bar diminish. So, some of them are harmless but the ones you meet somewhat later in the game are not and they hurt you.

Lara Croft's policy almost certainly sounds something like: what doesn't hurt me, shall not die!" :D
