Crash/Exit during conversations

Hey all! Just bought DEIW. I've heard great things, but so far I've been having some considerable problems making it run right ^_^.

(What the heck is up with having to go into the ini file to change any real settings???)

Anyway, when I'm in a conversation I can't click or press escape to skip whatever line they're on. If I do then the game crashes and exits to desktop. I tried running it in 2k compatibility but it made no difference. During one conversation, Alex finished his line, but the camera didn't move and it just stayed on him. His idle anim played, but the convo didn't continue...

Reinstalling might work, but I've done it so many times today already (and then I have to back up my ini file etc etc). Any other suggestions?

btw, I disabled the subtitiles via the default.ini file (when I disable them in-game they show up anyway...)

Running succcesfully on the 1.2 patch (which, btw fixed some previous problems succesfully).

One thing that does come to mind is a sound problem. I've had some dealing with that MOBO and the CODEC it uses is none too hot. Try dissabling 3D sound (aactually saying this, its been a while since I ran this game and I cant remember if thats an option!)

It's an option nestled somewhere in the ini file. I turned it on via the ini file, so I'll try turning it off.
