View Full Version : Measureing FPS

Is there a way of measuring FPS within the game? Getting it to display the count in the top corner or something?
Also, my current rig is:
Athlon XP2000+
Gigabyte KT400 mobo
2x256MB Corsair CAS2 RAM
80+40 IBM HD
Audigy2 ZS
Asus TI4200 128Mb GPU
This has slowed down quite a bit since I upgraded from a liveplayer5.1 to the Audigy, and I'm now having to play at 800*600 which on a 19" monitor is not perfect. I've been offered an XFX5950-ULTRA 256Mb for £130 which seems like a bargain, I know for a fact the guy's only had it for about 4 months. However Given the relatively low processor spec I have will I get the benefit of this GPU? I'm assuming I will but I thought I'd ask the question.
Cheers,

Go for the card, you will see quite a jump in perfomance even though you CPU will hold it back a bit.
Seems like a bargain.

Just to add to what's already been said: If you haven't yet, turn of VSync and Bloom. Should really increase your preformence.
If you already have.... ignore my comment :)

I wonder if the Audigy is using the CPU more than the 5.1 did. Anyone know?
yeh use fraps, its free,i never look at my FPS,if it runs smooth then its fine w/me

Ok, I loaded fraps and it reports 16 ish (at 1024x768) if sampling continuously and 20ish if sampling once a second. Tried this on Quake 3 and it reports 95ish but the timedemo results I get are much higher, in the 140s IIRC so It looks to me like fraps has an impact on the frame rate by running, especially on a marginal system maybe?
fraps reports mid 20s at 800x600
Q3 at 1600x1200

Fraps has a small impact on performance, but I've never seen it off by more than 5% or so from what the in-game FPS meter says. However, note that if you have Vsync enabled, Fraps will record your Vsync rate and not anything faster, which might explain why it's off with regard to your timedemo rating.

From memory I think I do have vsync enabled in Q3, I'll have a play

well, I just upgraded to a FX5900XT and Thief looks great at 1024, but frapps is still not reporting correct frame rate, still reporting less than 30 in Thief and about 97 in Q3, the timedemo four test in Q3 gives me 170+ at 1600
