Who would you rather side with, the hammers or the pagans?
I voted pagans, I don't like any organization that can work its unbeleivers to undeath.

I voted for the Hammerites. The Pagan monkey-men from METAL AGE totally pissed me off ("gah, just kill the stupid things!"), and a faction that would invoke undead just to prevent a burial just isn't my kind of thing. Not to mention the stupid accent, gah!
Besides, the Pagans do worship the Trickster whose @$$ was kicked by Garrett in the original THIEF. Siding with an enemy's followers doesn't appeal to me...
The Mechanists in METAL AGE were a lot cooler as a concept, anyway. Too bad Karras had all that "destroy every living thing in the city and replace everything with machines robots", otherwise they would be the best faction to support.

Like Powerslave, I voted Hammerites. I really would not have sided with any faction, however the Pagan's actions involving the incidents at Fort Ironwood and their stupid dialect call for well-placed arrow shots. Sort of ironic when one looks at it. While playing the Metal Age, I sympathized with the Pagans and wanted to kill the Mechanists due to their persecution of the Pagans.

Amazing how things work out eh?
Choosing wasn't that hard for me. The Pagans were responsible for the loss of Garrett's eye, which led to his incarceration in Cragscleft. Also, after all the help he gave them in The Metal Age, they just go back hating him in Deadly Shadows? Ungrateful taffers. I'll stick with the good old Hammerites. At least their god hasn't tried to kill Garrett.

Well, the Builder has not tried to kill Garrett yet. So there's still room for that in Thief 4. :D

I played it like Garrett and did no favours for anybody and didn't give a thought to who I annoyed in the process. Its amazing how many enemies you can make without really trying.

I would've said Hammerites in an instant if it wasn't for something I noticed early today while messing around in Stonemarket Proper
This is the point where the Pagans/City Watch/Thugs/Hammerites are all kicking the woodsy out of each other, while I'm running around attacking random people.
Something I noticed, though, the Pagans often slaughtered the City Watch, and also the thugs and, of course, the Hammerites. Heck, for the first time ever, they actually cast a friendly spell on me.
The Hammerites, however, while I am still fully allied with them, never helped me, even when I had two of the Watch chase me past one. I half wonder if the Hammers are allied with the Watch.
On the other hand, those Pagans have that damnable speech, which is so much worse than the Hammer's thou's and thee's.

I voted Hammers, since when pagans offered Garret to redeem himself because "Viktoria wouldn't approve of killing him" or something like that, hammers made the same offer just out of decency. And also while in Fort Ironwood, when I stumbled into a hammerite he asked me "How fares thee, Garret ?" I was grateful for his concern ! :D

Pagans, even though I didn't like them in the first games. Also, I like the Hammers less in DS, but liked them in the first two.

Hammers because the Pagans talk and look funny. And they really don't live in houses. They live in nature and caves. I like civilized people:
Except for the ones in Auldale.
the hammerites...........i think there the funniest characters iv ever met in a videogame.the things they say when searching for you has me in tears,im english and their old english accents are hilarious............."strength to thine arm":)

I would chose the Hammers over the Pagans because the Pagans are shifty and weird and their dialect is VERY annoying and Garrett's history with them is much more unpleasant than it is with the Hammers. Plus the "favors" the Pagans want Garrett to do are stupid, shoot elemental arrows here and there, jeeze. And raising the dead just because the graveyard didn't have enough moss in it, jeeze. Plus when Garrett is being chased down it seems like the Hammers come to his defense a lot more than the Pagans do. Plus one time in Auldale I was running from the city watch and ran into the Pagan territory fully allied and one of them called me a "thiefsie coward"! The Hammers say things like "the builder watchers over thee too Garrett". Just seems more pleasant to me.

Even if hammerites are not totally justified...
They do keep clean of undead, they build big buildings for the cities...
what do the pagens do?..
Kill people to please their god, destroy civilization buildings etc.
Plus I hate how they talk...

By the builder! I think thought the pagans were catching up!

On the other hand... the builders are nicer to you when they are your allies. The pagans don't seem to be as forgiving, they just keep saying they are watching me.

Ingame, I allied with both, but I prefer the Hammers. For one thing, killing Undead and Rust Mites seem like reasonable requests to make of a guy, whereas the Pagans ask you to spread moss (I couldn't do it, didn't know what to shoot) and shoot elemental arrows through their archways. How can those - particularly the latter - be the slightest bit beneficial? Also, the hammers are more civilised, and friendly.

I sooo have to agree with most of the Hammerites above. The quests for the Hammerites make sense. The rust mites are destroying the different parts of the city. The undead are abominations.
The pagan quests are lame and, as stated above, they took Garrett's eye after paying him to do them a favor, then when that didn't kill him, they tried repeatedly to finish him off.
I actualy tried allying with the pagans, but they kept attacking me while I was trying to mossify their silly cornerstones, so I decided that it was opense seasonsing on the woodsie folk. The more deaders I mades them, the betters I felt. The only time it realy became a hassle is in the Endgame, with the shamans infesting the city like the vemin they are.

I'm allied with both. It was easy, I killed like three rust mites and all the undead on the Abysmal Gale to become fully allied with the Hammerites. I shot two cornerstones, fired one water arrow at one cacoon and delivered the sapling to the Pagans to get my faction bar almost fully up with them.
Really, I don't like either. The Hammerites can be nicer, sure. And the Pagans can be more useful, whatever. But they are all morons.
The Hammerites Plus Sides: Less annoying, and considerably more sofisticated language/accent. That awesome prayer they chant everytime they pass a statue of the Builder (at least one of them in St. Edgar's Eve). Merciful. They build things, and invent things. They gave Garrett his cool machanical eye.
The Hammerites Bad Sides: They think anyone that doesn't commit their lives to hard manual labor is a heathen. They mutter the stupidest things when walking by themselves.
The Pagans Plus Sides: Better magic. Have no shame in walking around naked (this theory is still in the works). Sexy women. They actually have women in their faction (I'm also working under the theory that the Hammerites may be a massive homosexual cult).
The Pagans Bad Sides: Yep, that annoying speech. Their stupid mutterings rival that of the Hammerites. They seem clueless. They think anyone that doesn't commit their afterlife to a disgusting plant monstrosity is a heathen.
I know you're poll didn't request an essay, but I felt it was necessary.

I'll have to go with the Pagans. I actually like the way they talk, and the Hammers just seem... to preachy.

The Hammerites have great-looking warhammers and that's why I voted for them.Besides, their places look great, whereas the stupid Pagans( not really pagans since they whorship one god ) dwell at caves and sewers; how disgusting.

actually, the definition has been twisted throughout the years. "pagan" actually means "one who worships a false god," this came to mean "one who is not a Jew, Christian, or Muslim" (all three worship the same God), because those are the major religions of the world. most "pagans" worship multiple gods, but not all.

Well. It's an easy choise. Hammers.
First,
They have an cult that's relative normal compared to Pagans. Well educated, and exelent at constructing buildings/Cathedrals (You can't say that about Pagans)
Their Prisons and torture methods are quite admirable aswell. When stealing the chalice, in the Factory there's a small Prison. You see an Room with a guard outside and a switch by the Wall. It's were the guards bring in Prisons, pull the level and fire comes out from the sealing. Burning everyone inside it, you even hear they scream.
(I had a fun time blackjack the guard and lock him in there and pull the switch aswell ;)
and Garret always had an special thing with them. Mutual respect.
Thief 1, last mission......
"Thoose crazy hammers. You know....it wouldn't hurt to have a pair of happily armed fanatics on my side for a change. If I drop by their temple and explain things, they might be so distracted with Tricksters return and forgett their dispute with me"
Well....its love in the air :) and You are even helping them in Thief 2 against the Mechanists or something? Or might be in Thief 1? (I confuse the missions a bit)
All garret had for the Pagans was his feelings towards Viktoria. Since she is gone, why would he ever be allied with them? Altough they got their charm, but it's not anything Garret wants to asociate with

heck go to a walmart or something of the likes thief 1 at least you can get from the bargain cd's for around 1-10$ not a big box, just the essentials to house the cds
-----------------------------
i didn't vote cause i wouldn't choose to side with either of them they're both loony bunches of fruit loops
also anothe side note, say take T1 yeah the pagans are deceitful , yet they get things done, kinda like Gman, on the flip side, the hammers just wanted to bash your skull in all the time except when you were pretending to be one of them, adn even then they'd want to bash your head in if you didn't watch your step, then after it all they had the nerve for Gman's help..
