I have a bit of a problem with the original Thief game. For some reason it sometimes crashes to desktop with an error message whenever I goto the options, briefing or map screens. Problem is, I can't read the error message because the screen stays black and the only way to get back to desktop is to press "esc" which closes the error box. I know there is an error box there because it is visible for a split secont once the desktop displays.

This crash only occurs when the screen res changes from 1024x768 to whatever res the map and options screens are displayed in.

I have an ATI Radeon 9600XT, latest drivers and Windows XP installed.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

-edit-

I found a patch that will fix this, but now I've come accross another problem. I'm using the "Sold Out" budget version of Theif and when I try to play the game with the textures fix patch installed the game says I have to wrong CD in the drive :(

or press the windows key to return to desktop

BAH! I don't believe this

Thief started giving me odd CD errors for some reason and I thought it was something to do with the patch so I uninstalled everything and then went to put it alll back and I can't install the game.

I took the disk out to see if the disk is dirty and there is a gourge right around the outside edge of the disk in a circular motion

Where the heck did this come from?...

This means I'm going to have to try and find a new copy of Thief 1 now, and it's not the easiest game to find by a long shot. :(

I live in manchester, but the only shop that seems to stock thief 1 is HMV here and they don't normally have that many copies.

Luckily enough I've been able to buff out the scratches using toothpaste and cotton wool swabs. I've been able to re-install it now :D
