Do you think it would be a good idea for a Thief 3 add-on pack? If so, what would you like to see in it?

The loveliest expansion would come with Thief_3_Editor.exe....

If they really would make an expansion... it would expand some street areas (more buildings to rob and no fake doors), add more missions maybe... that kind of stuff. Like "optional Add-on" for those who have good computer.

I was considering maybe something along the lines of more pagans to kill heh... or another faction! "The Takers" a rustic band of underaged hoodlums that are trying to cut into your business of thieving!

More Glyph stuff, a couple more City sections that go nuts with the rooftops and interiors and alleyways (I'm thinking Stonemarket meets Old Quarter), and it has to be all pure Garrett stuff! No saving the world, I wanna go around town roughing up a fence who's done me a raw deal, break a buddy out of a special Solitary Confinement cell in Pavelock, kidnap a guy who tries to frame me for the crap he did and have to sneak his unconscious body all the way through town to my house without being seen, interrogate him, and drop him unconscious on the Pavelock doorstep for guards to find. And of course, all with the occasional big fat lord's manor to pay the rent, and the hilarious rich-folk conversations to go with it.

And, you know, this engine is awesome and has a very full compliment of textures already made. I bet someone could pull off a Total Conversion to play the first two Thief games with Thief 3 graphics. I know I'd buy it, even if it cost money. Hey, after all, the level design, cuscenes, storylines, AI programming and voice acting are already done! All we'd need is updated level models and a T3 conversion of Rope Arrows. :D

Karras' brother BareAss, an exiled Mechanist-come-Hammer-Revisionist, starts a dock-side whorekeep which threatens Garrett's livelyhood. Garrett enters a world of sin and corruption only to discover his old arch-nemisis "Benny" is behind a sinister plot to destroy him and the entire city.

- Add Burricks, Rope Arrows and Eating things ad infinitum.

- A race of warrior amazons that like to tickle men's bums with feather arrows

- More roof-top bantering between guards like in "T2: Life of the Party"

- Danny Devito as "Chuckles" the Leper Barkeep

Yes, an expansion pack and an Editor for fan missions.

A larger city with no loading between areas, and a classic rooftop mission with the rope arrow back, really missed that shimmying up and down to get through an upper window!

**Slight Spoiler** for those who haven't finished the game......

I've been gaming for a while now and I'd definately buy an expansion if they came out with one. I've got to admit that although I have a few gripes with Deadly Shadows, for the most part they really managed to capture the feeling of the previous "Thief" games.

I've had over a year and a half of disappointing titles and had about decided that most of the the PC game industry had forgotten how to make a good game. It's nice to see a game that restores my faith that someone, somewhere, can still put together a solid title. Frankly, after Invisible War, I wasn't very optimistic.

Personally, I'd like the add-on to bond seamlessly with the current game, making all doors "pickable", adding interiors, NPC's (and loot, of course).

I'd also like to see a slight modification of the game, so as to make all city areas accessable from the time you become able to use the Keeper Glyphs.

I'd like to see more rooftop areas, creating a true "Thief's Highway", that would let you get around and between most areas and of course a few new areas. I saw a couple of balconies that were unaccessable that could be used and there were a few places that looked like they might have a flat area hidden out of sight.

I'd like to see Garrett's Cloak back (maybe as a buyable item?), ditto the Rope Arrows and while we're at it, let's assume he knows how to swim so that he no longer dies when dropped in the water (add ladders or something to existing locations). I doubt we'll see the first two, but maybe the third???

Did I mention that someone really needs to add the Sewers back into The City? In previous games, you'd see the hatches every block or so, in Deadly Shadows, hardly any. Speaking of hatches. I'd love to see a use for that escape hatch in the floor of Garrett's room.

And was it just me, or did the torches and electric lights seem just a little too bright?

Four ideas on plots that could intertwine with the existing game and each other...

Okay, for one...a group of Keepers is resentful that Garrett, (a lowly thief) has been/will be granted Keeper Status (apparent from the end of the game). They secretly conspire to get him killed on his missions. He smells a rat pretty fast, but has to work at finding out who it is and getting the proof.

The Warden of Pavelock Prison is really ticked off at Garrett's escape (could have something to do with the bump on his head). It's tarnished his perfect record and he wants more than an ounce of Garretts flesh to make up for it! He's convinced the Sheriff (sp?) to reinforce City Watch patrols with some of his guards and has offered a hefty reward to anyone who can deliver the Master Thief.

Lady Elizabeth is still displeased with Garrett and would like to have him as her guest so that she can explain just how upset he's made her. She has sent her men out to look for him, but has also set a trap, hoping that he won't realize his danger until it's too late. She might eventually hand him over for the reward, or not.

Some of the Zombies that escaped into the Sewer are now showing up at different locations around The City, including the Prison. Someone's got to go down into the Sewers, find their hangout and do some housecleaning. As usual, Garrett ends up getting the short (and stinky) end of the stick. But, if it gets the Warden off his back, it'll be worth it.

I think elements of most of these could be used to create between 6 and 10 new missions, which could (for the most part) be woven into the existing game. None of them would be a stretch of the imagination and most of the elements are already there.

I'd like to see them put Garrett back in the Keeper library, (or somewhere) after the final cutscene, so that you could continue to have fun robbing people. Also, at this point, I think they should re-open the mission maps, so that you could re-explore those areas as well. Maybe have the church bells toll every three or six hours to mark the passage of time, so you'd know when loot might have re-spawned.

Oh the pile of ideas just waiting for that editor...
I suppose someone could bribe the cleaning lady at ion storm to leak the editor?

P.S.
I stil don't know of what unpickable door are you talking about. I've hardly missed one through the game, and all were (easily)pickable.

Well I just finished the game last night, and... well, so much for what I wanted in an expansion. I still want one though, I just suppose it will have to do without... certain things I was hoping to have more of.

Woo may ideas and i agree with most ! :)
The best idea i can see is a free for all on a large scale city (maybe a new city?)with no fake doors lots to rob and a massive complex thieves highway.
But some problems with some of the ideas and I dont know if these people anit finished the game yet but more glyphs ?! they dont work anymore m8 :) and i imagine neither do the keepers as well ( which is a pity , i would of like ot of seen a game based on the keepers ).

That ending was awesome, the kind you start to suspect but you really hope it's not what you think, but you just know it has to happen anyway. I'd hate for anyone to read it before they saw it!
Yeah, I posted my expansion pack wishes before I saw the ending. So sad, those glyphs could have done so much cool stuff in a sequel. Maybe they can think of a way to bring them back, like "well they were all erased, but we seem to be discovering new ones... glyphs that didn't work before, but now they have power in them." I want 'em back!

definitely a new set of levels is needed.

Ones that recreate the tension and joy of the first 2 games: zombies and haunts that are genuinely terrifying, pagans that sound as if they have a brain, hammerites that seem forbidding even when they're on your side. And for chrissake if we MUST have climbing gloves instead of arrows let's have somewhere to climb to!!! Upper storeys that aren't just decoration but have open windows for robbing. The gloves are just a copout, ideal for easy escapes.

And a city that seems like a city, - as in Ambush/Trace the Courier/Calendra and most of the good FMs. This isn't even a decent village! No dank dripping sewers, nowhere to climb to, few doors that open.

And stories. As Grafixmonkey and the Cleric have suggested. Garrett doesn't always have to save the world. He hardly has time to pay the rent with all this heavy stuff going on.

If we can't have any of these then for heavens sake, release the damned editor so someone can make levels like that.

grafixmonkey
06-27-2004, 12:33 AM
Well, there might be a good reason they can't release the editor... like maybe they used Maya to do the game graphics instead of some ghetto in-house software like the editor for the original Thief games. We'll see, I think if there was a good way of releasing an editor they would probably do it. Maya however costs huge bucks, and a lot of game makers are using it to do their graphics now so it's possible there just isn't an editor at all.

As for climbing, how'd you not find any climbing locations? I think you just assumed there weren't any and stopped looking. There were actually a good deal of them, all over the city and in at least one level. Plenty of upper story entrances to city interiors, and one area had a small network of rooftops you could traverse. Auldale has climbing areas that bypass tricky guards so you can avoid knockouts, and in Old Quarter you can traverse a good portion of the map by climbing up a wall and using a series of pipes and ledges. Docks had places too, some good hiding places to let the guards forget about you and even a little fun room with a reference to Thief 2 in it. I did like the rope arrows much better though. I'd be very curious to know exactly why they were removed. There must have been a good reason?

and...

"Oooh, plumsies! I takers them!!"
"What? Where bes my plumsies? Givers them back!"
"Ha, I eaters them! Plumsies allll gone!!"
"Awww, plumsies"
(roughly sketched excerpt of a Thief 2 conversation)

... that's half a brain? :D I thought the Pagans seemed a lot more like a plausible group of people in T3, kind of like a militant Vegan hippie culture. In T2 they just came across as fanatical whackos.

Since the Thief 3 engine was derived from Deus Ex 2 engine, wich was derived from unreal 2 engine, could it be possible to modify UnrealED to build maps for Thief 3? I know it's quite a long shot, but it's at least a shot q: .

Well, we can hope. I haven't been following any of the talk about editors, so I wouldn't know. I should check out the Ion Storm forums though, and see if there's any more info there, because it would be nice to know if I should be watching the net for fan missions in the future or not.

can you imagine guards on horses, patrolling the streets, ready to charge you down when you have been spotted......:)

or Garrett being able to set traps for unsuspecting guards, like thin rope tied across a path waiting for guards to trip over it....

If the guards on horses were carrying torches, it would be fun to sneak across the room in the horse's shadow, between its legs!

just another thought,

possibly adding squeaky floorboards to some of the buildings, or even being able to lie down and crawl past guards....

or being able to lock doors with your lockpick.... just imagine you've just walked into a courtyard with two doors on the other side, and two guards are patrolling the area going through one door and coming out the other, and you run up and lock the door so they can't get out. Then the guard would have to go around the building and find another path to the courtyard to inspect what just happened....

the possibilities are endless.... :)

Some really SWEET suggestion guys ! also how about coming across other thiefs while robbing buildings or joining a thief guild a work up to master of the guild ?! you would really need a large city easliy 50x/100x the size of the one in Thief DS! :D as you say the possiblities are endless !!! :D

We need larger levels and more Museum/mansion style. Levels that feature regular gaurds or Hammerites patrolling the halls. Don't get me wrong, some of the conversations from thugs were pretty funny, but the levels in Deadly Shadows appear to be a major change from the previous titles. Change is good and a least the Devs kept in Theif themed.

They could've changed it drastically like the p*ss poor title, Lords of the Realm III. Thankfully, they did not and kept it rougly the same as the previous two titles. Though I have said it before and Ill say it again - this game should have strictly been a PC title. Hopefully the cross-platform release is not an idication that the SDK is a pipe dream and the series is going to die without any replay value.

I think horses would look too corny to be plausible. We already have oil to make people trip. There would have to be two walls next to each other for a rope to work, but oil has few limitations.

Why not have a level where Garrett can go taffing about on a large steam ship? The steam technology exists as was evident with the clocktower. It would involve the use of load zones for various parts of the vessel, but it could turn out to be a pretty awesome map IMHO.

Yep, more City stuff. Put the objectives in the City; more sewers, secret passages, rooftops. And make Garrett's place bigger, more apartments-- maybe the guy across the hall is spying on him, etc.

Bigger areas would solve a lot of gripes about T 3, but putting together a large city area without eating through your memory andd burning out your graphics card is definitly an issue.

anyway if they had to add anything why not make rooftops climeable rather that have garret slip to his doom every time you try to go for a rooftop view. I mean its only a diagonal surface should be easy enough, and it would add a bigger rooftop area for the climbing buffs. :D

I agree with you about the oil, but I think horses would be plausible, after all isn't the game set in a medieval age. With the development team Thief has at the minute, I'm sure they could make pretty good darn horses. :)

Just thought of another suggestion, what if other townspeople could wake up unconcious bodies. Imagine it....

You've just knocked someone out but don't have time to hide them without being seen, someone sees the body lying on the ground and instead of running away screaming that they are dead, they kneel down and wake him up.

Oh and another thing that jsut popped into my head, if people could interact more with the environment, like a guard on patrol who holds his club or sword out and runs it along a wall as he's walking towards you. So if you didn't hear his footsteps you would hear the noise he's making at the wall. Or even if different people have different types of shoes that make different noises. Imagine guards who don't make a noise because they are wearing leather type shoes. :P

No saving the world

Exactly ! (x 500 more !'s). I wanted to be a scummy thief who has eventually got good enough to make good pay offs - missions should come from an equally corrupt person sending you after things purely because they will bring in big cash.

Instead of a bearded lunatic in a church talking to a thief "fetch the holy book of fortune telling - for we may see the future of our holy childs prophercies more clearly Garrett" Stick it! Your boss leaves you a note "come see me garret- i have a job you may be interested in" then you get there "theres a big gold vase just been shipped to lord Xs house, steal it and ill give you a bag of cash for it..."
Fair enough - i'll accept that there has been a story in the previous games that I have no clue about - I just dont like being a curious, supersticious and mysterious person in any game - just a run of the mill guy who realised he has a talent for stealing.
Hmm a book, with strange markings! I wonder what it could mean? - oh no wait - I dont care - where does this woman keep her pearls...
