Well we installed Thief Deadly Shadows and I muST say I am a bit disappointed now that I am unalbe to move the mouse properly to play the game.

I have XP Home Edition running on our game computer , installed latest Direct X 9.b, also checked out the read me file which states that if I use the alt and tab together I might be able to make my mouse work but it faILS miserably ####&%!#@!

Actually I see a cursor (Broom Stick) but it does not follow my movements. I sometimes find something to click on in the dark, I had hoped to be able to move the cursor as well so I can make proper selections.

Anyway, if anyone has a solution, I be happy to hear from you.

Take care
Dthief

several people had this problem (including me) and it seems there are different reasons for it. have a look here:

in my case updating the drivers for my graphics card solved the problem
good luck!

But where would I go to update my drivers for a Xabre 6.1310.3080 Graphics Card ? I did a search and found various sites but none that looked like the proper manuafacturer of this graphics card.

It seems from my understanding this cursor problem only happens in the main menu which I find very frustrating indeed.

I would think this is a Eidos problem mainly, and maybe it would be nice if they provide better support and patches.

IN the meantime if someone new where I could go to get the proper drivers I would appreciate this very much.

Thanks

Errr, how can that be when updating non-Eidos software fixes the problem?

In a _very_ simple sense, your video card driver is not doing what the game or DirectX expects it to do...the game is adhering to certain Microsoft-mandated standards for DirectX that your video card driver is not doing...so, how is this Eidos' fault? There are perhaps many things that Eidos could be faulted for, but this is not one of them.

If you are unsure of what driver to install for your Xabre video chip, your best bet is to contact the manufacturer of the system, or of the Xabre video chip (Sis), and ask them what is the latest version for your model, where to get it and how to install it.

Your next best bet is to ask fellow gamers for help, at places like this. Async79 found the right place for your driver downloads, as long as you have an Sis Xabre 600, 400, 200, 80 or SiS315.

You can find exactly what model of Xabre video chip you have by checking DirectX Diagnostic: Go to Start>Run>type in dxdiag>click OK>look on the Dispaly tab in the upper left...under Device: Name you will find whatever model Xabre chip you have, along with the driver version you have installed for it. Whatever version you currently have is NOT '100% DirectX 9 Compliant' otherwise the cursor would be diplayed in the Thief menus.

So...try updating to the latest Xabre driver for your model of video chip and try the game again.

Thanks for the info on checking my version using dxdiag.

My computer is fairlly new XP Home Edition, With Xabre Chip Type Xabre 200 Rev 01 Version 6.13.10.3080 manuafactured by SIS but it says the driver is date is 11/26/2002. The file is called SISGRV.dll

I tried to go to Xabre.com and this site is a pop up heaven asking me to even make their site my home page. It looks like they lost control of the site completely. What a shame.

And all the links for drivers at Xabregamers say version 3.57 etc so I am worried about downloading the wrong drivers or downloading an older version.

Does Sis have a website? Which driver would you recomment I download? Should I be downloading a performance driver or regular drivers from this site and can this sit e be trusted? I would hate to install the incorect drivers.

My son looks over my sholder with confidence, where I not thrilled with the aspect of destroying the computer over this game, that I myself have seriously enjoued since day 1, I would hate to give up this enthusiam now.

Thanks for your help... everyone.

Hi again DThief,

With any luck we will get this sorted out!

After nosing around the web for a bit it looks like this is the latest driver for the Sis Xabre 200 (http://download.sis.com/download_step1.php?act=Search&mode=2&category=2&subcategory=201&os=4&x=17&y=8), or at least I think so.

It is dated from Feb 2004 and is downloadable directly from the Sis Support Site (http://www.sis.com/support/).

Keep in mind I don't have a Xabre series video chip here to test myself, and for safety's sake you should contact either Sis or the manufacturer of your system to be absolutely sure, but it looks like that version is the latest Official driver available for your vid chip.

Standard procedure for installing video drivers goes something like this: Download the driver to your desktop, or some other place where you know where to find it (I keep mine in a 'Drivers' folder in My Documents). The driver should come with instructions on how to install it, and you should check for instructions and foillow them; typically you need to UNINSTALL the driver you have currently installed, restart Windows in a standard VGA mode (Windows will do this automatically), then install your newer video driver and restart again.

After all of that, Congratulations! you have updated your video card driver and should try the game again.

Hope that helps, and please keep us posted of your progress, or feel free to ask questions here, I and other forum members will help if we are able. :)

I have latest drivers on a new XP Home Edition computer, Mother board is Elite Group K7S7AG with Xambre Chip 200. It works great on other games like EA 007 Nightfire . I am sad to say I wish I could return this to the store and get a refund.

I have uninstalled the program now.

Thanks for your help anyway, at least I have updated my drivers to latest version for my video card. :)

I wish I could be able to play this game. I will miss the opportunity.

One note for your department is when I hover my mouse over the buttoms blindly, as the cursor stays still, I am able to highlight and get around the menu screen okay until I hit the start button and then it freezes up and I hear a repeated sound.

Take care Dthief
