I have had this problem in both the Thief 3 demo and full game. The game will load to the main menu and everytime I highlight anything with my mouse, the game will select it...even though I am not clicking anything. It is like there is a button "stuck" that keeps selecting things. The game is completely unplayable, I can't even do anything in the options screen because it will exit me out immediately. I have no joystick or anything like that plugged in. I have tried 3 different mouses and none of them work. All my other games & apps on my PC work fine. I have updated my latest ATI drivers and that did not help. Here is my system:
Windows XP
ATI 9600XT 256MB
Pentium 4, 2.8Ghz
1GB RAM

It must be getting bad input from somewhere.
Try using either the standard 'PS/2' mouse drivers in Windows or try updating the the latest version of Mouseware if using a Logitech.

Try unplugging your joystick, in case you have one.
*edit* oops, missed that line....sorry.:(

I tried the new mouse drivers and did not have a joystick plugged in. Still acting goofy. When I start the training level, the character automatically walks forward and to the left. The only buttons that should do that are W and A. They are not stuck. If it was just those 2 buttons...I could just fight with the option screen until it took....but alas it is more than that. Anyone have any other ideas?

You are getting behavior that is identical to having a gamepad plugged in that is conflicting with the game. I believe you would know darn well whether or not you have a joystcik plugged in or not but the type of behavior you are getting seems input-related.
Start looking at other input devices:
What kind of keyboard do you use? Do you have another keyboard you could try?
Are there any other input devices (or for that matter ANY devices) plugged in to the PC? Any serial or USB device should be considered.
A mystery so far that we can hopefully solve.

Maybe you have "StickyKeys" enabled or something?
Go to Start/ControlPanel/AccessibilityOptions - first tab.
Maker and model of keyboard please...
