View Full Version : What could make this game better

I know this has a snowballs chance in hell, but I think the money system needs work.
You see, right now I have 12000 gold, and a full stock of every concievable weapon. And Im not exactly merciful, and Im not exactly a conservative arrow user. If I was playing on a harder difficulty and ghosting missions I would have even more gold, and less to spend it on since I wouldnt be using as many arows, mines or gas bombs.
The problem I have with this game is that the more theif-like you are, the less reason there is to be a thief. I think that stuff should cost a lot more, particularly the things that youd be using more of If you werent allowed to kill people.
That way you always be tighter on cash and would need to go pocket picking or do the side missions before the larger missions. I think that would make the game a little more interesting - maybe garret's money would go down a bit every night, ya know, in case he has to pay rent.
My two cents.

Only one thing. Less bugs. :(

yeah, there are other things that definatly need fixing first, but I thought Id throw that out there, see if anyone else agrees with me.

Heh, know what'd be sweet... if someone made an online multiplayer version of T3 and expanded the city... loot resets every X minutes.. imagine a group of thieves racing to sneak past guards and pick up loot all over the city to purchase scarce supplies with for the next "raid".. that'd be purty damn cool :)

ONLINE MULTIPLAYER VERSION FOR THIEF 3!!!? Wasn't enough the bad third person view and now this thing! Good thing there is none who realize some of these ideas yet.

In my opinion the 3rd person view is excellent. Way better than the 1st person.
My biggest issue from the start was animation and physics. They bought Havok 2 engine and it was used for moving around boxes. ODE can do that, and it's free. Obviously they needed character interaction for being able to pick up bodies and move them around, but still, it looked unrealistic. The animations on the jumping and climbing were kind of odd. It looks like the animation for jumping WAS meant to be realistic, but then they realized that it wasn't high enough, and made him jump higher. Climbing latters was wierd too.. he doesn't use his hands when he towards the top of the latter... I've never seen anyone be able to do that. The Havok 2 thing messed with my head the most though... I just don't get it. Unreal engine comes with Karma engine included.

I've got a number of issues with thief. The major one is that it's so underworked. They put all the work into animating the world full of characters but skip on making the characters alive. they could have had a plethora of minor missions or just interesting dialogs and what-not. Not to speak of the Hammer/pagan aliances. They had a great idea with aliances and stuff, but they just couldn't be bothered to make it matter. It's to easy to become allied, and you don't have to chose sides when they're fighting eachother. I've got no problem with the physics engine or the bugs, I can live with it, I just don't get why they couldn't be bothered with breathing life into it. Their is a number of things that make the game a little bit stupid. There's no point avoiding the city watch. You can out-run them. and if they would corner you, with some skilled running around you can easily kill them. That's Garret with a blunt knife against a armoured guy with a sword.
And then there's the motivational issue. Nobody want's to be a thief. People become thieves becouse they're dumb, lazy or desperatelly poor. Garret is niether. He just doesn't feel like the low-life he's supposed to be. And for a "master thief" he rather lives like a dumb sucker thief.
Since it's completelly linear, (there's no way the affect the order or outcome of the missions) I don't understand why the role-playing facets. Why go around and discover the city? I like it but it's a completely flat and linear 3-d "sonic the hedgehogg".

I agree with the fact that the money system is messed up. I had a full inventory for almost the whole game. I also liked the rope arrows. The climbing gloves made up for it, but I enjoyed using the arrows more.

Indeed, the third person is one of the game highlights. I have had a couple bugs, but it's way better than first person all the same.

Biggest problem I have so far you brought up. The inventory/money system is totally unbalanced. Items need to be a lot rarer and or cost more money. Compared to the first 2 games, it's far too easy. Come on, I'm always rolling with at least 20 water arrows, 5 fire arrows, 10 flashbombs, etc....
I like how the first 2 games the items were really balanced. You had to make trade offs. This game feels like I have a platinum mastercard. I never worry about running out of money or items.

Bah! 1st person is the only TRUE way of playing Thief! Basta.

Well I never play in 3rd person.
I consider 3rd person mode as unrealistic and cheaty way to play the game, to be able to see around corners and all. What's so exciting in that, then.
But perhaps some consolists prefer 3rd person, as most of the console games are 3rd person shoot/beat'em ups that I have seen quite enough.

- Rope Arrows
- Swimming
- A tad bit better map design
- Absence of loading zones
- Larger city (Rooftops above two stories and Garrett calls it the Thieves' highway? How pathetic.)
- Absence of machinema cutscenes
- Full drawn briefing cutscenes prior to each major mission
- Improved ragdoll physics
It isn't the bugs they missed that bothers me that much. It is the flaws in the design of the game.

Totally agree Pint0. There were some classic things missing. Rooftops, ropes and the other stuff you mentioned.
Multiplay? Yeah I wish but that request has fallen on deaf ears once again.
For those of you that don't know there was a multiplayer clone of thief made using the unreal engine I think. I can't remember the name of it but it was a direct rip of the game and worked fairly well. I have played it. Look on the search pages I'm sure it's till out there. If I find it I'll post the link. Although it was done a few years back so graphics wise it's not nearly as good as this version.

Well I doubt we'll see any improvements for these "design flaws" before Thief 4 is released... Improving already released product doesn't bring Eidos and fellows any more money, or I believe this is how they think.

MP in thief ?That could be nice (or weird) ...
But what mp can be to a sneaking game?
Maybe playing in campaign missions together or something like who steals more competition.
But this game could use some difficulty it was easy, and they could do us a favor by not putting any undead under doors
I was so damn scared in the Abysmal Gale when a stupid corpse (which was lying under a door) jumped at me

may be more connections with the story of thief 1

More difficulty is a cop out to adding more content. Games don't need to be hard as heck to be be longer. How many CD's did you count?? I expected to get more game for that many discs.
Don't get me wrong I loved the game but it lacked content. This game could have used alternate modes of play other than the same old follow the story line routine. I love the game enough to WANT MORE.
There is no longevity to this game. Sure go ahead and crank up the difficulty and you can provide yourself with a cheap method of getting that longevity. There is a right way and wrong way to make a game last. Difficulty settings are poo poo cheap.
P.S. First person is more realistic because it gives you the same limited view as if you were really there. #rd person is a nice feature but I kinda consider it almost like cheating.

You're right!;) I want to look through Garrett's eyes and see what he sees, i want to play as Garrett the master thief not as a some god who rule the body of that thief.
C'mon what's wrong with all of you 3rd person fans, this is our favorite game- THIEF, not GTA 3 or Tomb Rider?
And one more thing, i'm sorry if i abused someone.

Games like splinter cell etc sneak'em ups need co-operative online play - whats all this emphasis on totally removing NPCs/Mobs and making sneakers brawl - sure player vs player may be more challenging as I is better than AI, but would be nice for a scout and a looter in thief, one guy could grab a sack of supplies for the mission ahead whilst another found the way to the clock tower. One could start at the bottom one at the top etc etc.
Dont get my wrong - I paid £17 ($31) sealed - I have to work 2 hours for this IRL - Its an excellent 5 star game too - but devs need to pay attention to co-operative so much!

This game needs sex... what does Garrett's "fan" in the fence store say?
"Hey Garrett, maybe I could see your house sometime, I hear it's near by. More specifically, maybe your bed. Ill bring an oil flask and... well, you just probably want to shop"

One helpfull addition to the game would be the ability to rename the saved files like in thief 2. I lost 4 days of playing when my kids overwrote my game save.

More exotic enemies, for example the flame creatures in TDP which made a good moving target for water arrows.
Have a couple of places where Garret could be totally whacked unless he quickly solves some kind of puzzle, like finding a secret way out so he can escape only if he blinds them in a specific location so his path is clear, etc. Like perhaps the rats should have ganged up on Garret in the sewers, or a spot in Cradle where all the doors slam shut and the undead drop down from the ceiling...perhaps with the Hag's voice telling garret that he shouldn't have come down there, etc. I just don't recall any where that Garret is in a situation that he couldn't just throw a flash bomb and run in the other direction.
More exotic levels. Have some weirdly decorated places...it became way too boring to see everything the same...pagans with the same green stuff and Hammerites with the same religious themes. There should have been some cool levels like Ramirez Mansion in TDP.
Lastly, I know this may be a bit vague, but I think TDS should have been designed with the player's entertainment in mind. Instead it looks like it was designed with the goal of making a thief game using today's technologies, improve the quality product, design it for the console machines in mind, design it so even 4 year olds can understand it, etc. In other words the top priority for why we even buy games to begin with "ENTERTAINMENT" has been put at the bottom and reads something like, "hopefully players will find the game entertaining". If we wanted to see the same things without must deviation then we would just watch our parents.
So, in general it seems that I'm saying that the game was good, but it's not as entertaining as some of the other games which perhaps uses decades only technology.

This is perhaps the biggest annoyance of all IMO, it is like Thief3 was designed for players who live completely alone. Perhaps the game designers are such a nerds and do live alone so this system suits them ;) But I'm certainly not happy about it.
First I thought that the saves location would be at least user profile specific, but NO. Even if I am using my own account in WinXP, my saves still go to that user's "My Documents" who first installed the game. Now is this stupid or what?
Enabling console would Save the day, assuming there's a functioning save-command like most other games with console do have.

What I think would be awsome is some optional misions that you could get tips and eavsdrop to find out about. These missions could be purely for the purpose of getting more loot or an upgrade that is more of a luxary than necesity. I would also like more houses to break into in the city.

I think multiplayer theif 3 would be AWSOME-O!
I mean, think about it, sculcing a convoy or something (evolved theifing ofcourse) and you see two other theifs sculcing past some dim lights...
Its a race against the other theifs to steal it first... or maybe sabotage by shooting a noicemaker were they are... or just plain kill em!
Ragdoll fysics... in this game... they are way bad!
Postal 2 had better!
For some reason any girl I pick up, and lay down, spreads her lags 90degrees ... are they trying to tell me something?
And why does corpses so easily slide! I mean, down stairs yeah! down 20degrees? NO!
A human body should be like a bean bag, if more than 50% is over a edge, it falls over... else it doesnt, that bit just hangs...
cause when i put a corpse on a ledge, and a arm is over it, the whole body gets draged over...
AI... cmon, you can do better!
Balancing the money yeah... still I think the whole concept is strange...
A gold crown is worth 600 gold, and an arrow 100!? Wtf!? Your telling me a gold crown is worth 6 plain arrows!? Are those arrows armour piercing or heatseeking, or did I miss something?
Give us more fun items to use! Not more expensive items! I mean, is a arrow sopose to cost more than if it was made out of gold!?
And why is it, that 500 gold is enough to hire a staff of 20 people and a whole mansion... but garrat can get 14000, and still wants to go around theifing and "I just for no reason want to get involved in everything! Even if I got enough money to buy the city watch and just kill everyone!"...
I want to be able to buy things!
Make theif 4 like Gta vice city stylish... a big city, with small allys and stuff, being able to buy houses, maybe if you like to brag, a richmans house, being able to put your cool loot in it, or maybe a small hideout at the risky district, or a airy addict at the docs...
More factions... I dont like when it feels like everything in a game has a porpouse... things should just be to make it feel alive...
And seriusly, was it just me who though the whole
"Ok youve stoled our most sacred artifact in this part of the world, youve killed the entire gaurd squad (i did with the pagens), and youve looted and destroyed everything...
But if you shoot some moss arrows, we'll gladly die for you!"
concept was totaly fubar?
Trust me, if you make it bigger and more free, and less "follow this line"... it would be a smasher! Maybe ad some uppgrade system or rpg, which if you would like to buy a uppgrade or something, i'd cost money... something to make multiple uses...
people love choosing.
Right, big posts ; BAD!

The only thing missing in Thief 3 was a chance to see Garrett naked. (Yes, I am a girl)
Seriously, though. The money/inventory system does need a fix. I ended the game with about 10000 extra. Also, I wanted more rooftop stuff as well. I really enjoyed the fact that they allow city play as part of Thief 3....now I want the city to be bigger!
