View Full Version : First-Person or Third-Person ?

Hi,

Just wanted to see on which perspective you chose to play the game. So how do u view the game while playing ? I personally like to juggle between views, but mostly I use Third-Person perspective since I love Garretts new look. And with those graphics, I simply can't refuse to admire all the nice lighting effects on myself.

Thanks for voting.
TheTerminator.

PS: If you constantly change perspectives during gameplay, just vote for the perspective which you think you spend most time on.

I have a convenient button next to my movement keys to switch perspectives. I like the looks of the game a lot more in 3rd person, but I find it a bit harder to control (except for getting items out of chests - that's real hard in 1st person), so whenever I'm doing anything tricksy I switchers to 1st person. ;)

Eeeeh, whats the key for 1st/3rd person view? I can't find it :D

The key is V, and I use both. Hug a wall then go into 3rd person to find where the guard or whatever is.. Helped a lot in that damn scary cradle mission.

Im afraid i have to honour the intentions of the origional thief games, playing in 3rd person mode almost seems disrespectfull somehow.

Its abismal that it ever got put in, a total atmosphere wrecker.

I thought - given my total love of the Jedi Knight series - that I would use 3rd person more. But i don't. I *did* give it a try during my first run in the tutorial, and tried it again today when I accidentally hit the V key (ham fisted a crouch ;) ) and while it felt better, I still switched quickly back.

I sometimes use 3rd person instead of leaning because Garret can't lean unless his feet have enough clearance, which (I think) is a poor design choice - I can't lean out windows or over balconies to see any guards below (and/or shoot arrows at them)

I have been using third person almost exclusively. I did not think that I would but it works better for me - smoother for some reason and I really like watching Garrett move.

Iv been playing in 1st 100% of the time, i checked out 3rd in the training mission just to see what garrett looked like but i feel like it loses its tension when i go to 3rd...doesnt feel like the same game.

Let me point out, since it hasn't been mentioned in this thread yet, that switching from 1st person to 3rd will cause a significant decrease in your frame rate, 10% to 30% from what I've observed.

This is one of the main reasons why I stick to first person all the time.

I used to be a first-person freak, but since playing the Hitman series, GTA: Vice City, and Max Payne 2, I'm now addicted to 3rd person and played this one exclusively in 3rd person.

The Garrett model is really well done and the movement animations as well as the great dynamic lighting effects are worth it IMO.

I don't find any significant change in the immersiveness, but I'm pretty used to third person suspense filled stealth games after Hitman, so YMMV.

But ya, i'm really just used to it.

It looks good, and it just feels 'right'.

I have strictly played using 1st person. Going into 3rd person looses the atmosphere of the of the game and IMHO, is cheating to peak around corners. 'bout the only time I go into 3rd person is when I am pressed against a wall during an AI conversation.

It feels like splinter cell in 3rd person, its wrong wrong wrong.

Well, considering lean is useless in this game since they crippled it (like not being able to lean over a railing) and it gains you no stealth advantages over walking blindly around the corner and standing there in the middle of the street, a quick third person view seems a good substitute.

3rd Person, I despise FPS's so that's why I cant play this game in first person heh...main reason that stopped me from playing the original thiefs..though I did give em a try. (Ill probally try and find them and go at em again scince I absolutely LOVE Thief: Deadly Shadows)

Ninti...leaning useless? I found it very useful. And I like the whole body awareness thingy too...

Body awareness always freaks me out in this game. It always looks like there's a guard standing a centimeter away from me since i'm not used to it...

Has made me jump more than a few times.

The problem with the first-person perspective in this game is that, despite all Warren's hand-waving to the contrary, TDS was coded primarily as a third-person game. First-person view just bolts the camera to the third-person model's face. As a result, first-person movement is obscenely clunky, and you get wonderful little movement artifacts like exaggerated head-bob, the sideways-step when trying to walk in a new direction, and the apparent framerate drop when leaning because the lean animation uses discrete frames of animation.

To be blunt, it pisses me the h*ll off.

I dreamed last night being Garrett and trying to backstab a guard on some stairs. I did not dream myself watching Garrett do the stuff.

Probably many people find 3rd p.v. quite usefull. If I were new to Thief universe, I would probably like it as well. But I know I'm a TDP and TMA zealot (probably because of this I'll stick to DarkLoader and FMs) and I see the world in a different way. Through a looking glass...

Hear, hear UV...I'm with you 100% Ta and Good Hunting!

ps: Just for the record...no 3rd person view works for what is/was a 1st person game! For those who play 3rd person ain't playing a first person type game...you shouldn't see anymore than what you should via first person camera views...when you go 3rd person...you are then getting an advantage that normally you wouldn't/shouldn't experience otherwise. Third person was just wrong for this game...sorry console players (or in some cases some PC players)...it's just not the same game played that way...but to get you (Xbox'rs) into the market...that's what happened :( That's why they made the genre FPS's so you could experience as close as possible to making you feel like the character not someone watching what your character does...BIG difference. I'll stick with the 1st person in my FPS games thank you :)

Well, seeing how the poll results turned out, im feeling quite left now out (being a huge Thief fan and all). :(

Before I got this game, I thought that implicating a Third Person view option would destroy the Thief series. But once I got the game, I really like the 3rd Person view since I could finally see garrett move and the lighting/ shadow affects cast on Garrett's body where quite spectacular to me. So, without any rememberance of my previous hatred to the new perspective for Thief 3, I just kept playing along in Third Person mode.

But I realise now that im cheating. I should be playing in 1st person since:

* 3rd person takes out the atmosphere of the first 2 games
* 1st person always brings a little more tension to the game (especially scary levels ;) )
* 1st person is definetely more realistic and challenging

So, having played so deeply into the game (im in the Keeper Compound right now) I have made a decision.... I will keep on playing in Third person until I finish the game. Then, I will restart the game at Expert difficulty (im currently playing at Hard difficulty) and promise myself that I will not swith to 3rd person once (stictly 1st person all the way).

I think its a great idea for people who are basically using mostly 3rd person such as myself. First of all it makes the replayability of the game more interesting, and secondly it allows us to test our thieving skills in more realistic and challenging way.

That should work out nicely for anyone in my position.

Thanks for reading.

Dis-respectful to the Thief series huh ? This coming from the guy who posts links on where to get a free pirated download of Thief 3.

Nice going by the way Denny... you're the one who should be shot..... better still, let you rot in prison ;)

"IT'S NOT A TUMA!" (Arnie in Kindergarten Cop)

No you aren't CHEATING! You are playing a game that you enjoy in the most enjoyable way for you. Quit feeling guilty and go for it!

I couldn't do what you suggest, however, because I feel clumsy and disconnected from the game while watching the little doll sneak about. So that would not be a replay option for me.

I stick with 3rd person. I like watching Garrette move about and sneak up on a guard with his dagger drawn and thrust it in his back. I don't really see it as cheating since you can just use the lean key to peak around corners in 1st person.

Hmm depends on the kind of game, but in the likes of Thief, System Shock and every other game, that tries to draw me into it and to make me part of the world to create tension and atmosphere first person is the only choice for me. Whenever I switch into 3rd person all tension is lost and I know I'm just playing a game, which is allright for the ones like GTA and so on, but would destroy most of the fun in Thief for me.

I simply don't understand why the 3rd person view was included in the game.

For myself 3rd person stuff smacks of some kiddie console game, not a PC game meant for an older crowd.

If I wanted to play 3rd person, then I would not have bought any of the Thief games, or any other First Person Shooter (sneaker) out on the market.

I've noticed a trend in 3rd person perspectives in some games (the latest Ghost Recon game will be third person), and I can't help but feel real frustration at what I think is a marketing decision influencing game design. Blizzard's coming out with their "Thief" game entitled "Starcraft Ghost" where you not only play in 3rd person view, but you also play a female ghost; another marketing decision a-la Tomb Raider as all the units from the game were male. :(

Part of the whole concept of first person shooters is that you vicariously enter another world, and experience said world as if you were actually there. That's the whole point behind the design concept.

If I want to play Tomb Raider or Donkey Kong, Sonic or some other title with lots of bright textures, flashy special effects and cutesy characters, then I'll buy one of those. In the meantime, as much as I like the Thief series, keep the 3rd person view out of it.

I'd stay strickly to 1st person if possible. I played Thief 1 and 2 that way. For a quick glimps, you have LEAN (altho I hope what that other chap said about "they crippled" it, is not entirely true) and for the rest... well, solve the problem, don't bend it.

Using 3rd person view for "previews" is like cheating to me. Use the friggin eye or something. If I'd be a thief trying to rob Walmart, I probably wouldn't have a flying cam hovering next to my head just for the better looks of it.

It's a bit like playing a racing game like NFS with the overhead camera in order to see where the street is going behind that hill or detect incoming traffic earlier. Where is the fun and skill in that?

I never said "console's are so crap..." (whatever that may mean). What I said was had I wanted a game with a 3rd person perspective, then I would've played either a Sonic, Mario Brothers, Tomb Raider or some OTHER game; one with flashy graphics and lots of special effects.

I said it previously. I'll say it again. Part of the WHOLE POINT of playing a first person view/shooter game is to have the experience of being able to interact with an imaginary world as if you, the player, were actually there.

I'll also add that quantity of sales is not an indicator of how good a thing is (cars, books, games, etc.) If it were then five star resteraunts would be serving Big Macs and buckets of extra crispy.

Is there an adult only forum around here somewhere?

FPS all the way. I've tried 3rd person in other games, and went into 3rd a little of the training mission, but I totally lose track of where I'm pointed, or that I'm even there. IMHO, 3rd person makes Garret an extension of yourself, while 1st person actually turns you into Garret. I get a better feel and more immersion when I get the feeling that something is actually behind me, or to the side like in 1st person, instead of an extension of myself which gives me the impression that the extension can be severed with no consequences.

I didn't see Garret's hair raise up in the Cradle mission, but I definitely felt mine.

First person perspective is my personal preference. But because the game was worked on as third-person for one of its primary platforms, sometimes you have to use third person to see things or do things. I've also found it's a lot easier to fight using third person (although this is admittedly because parry was dropped in this version).

i used mostly 3rd person and agree its a immersion/atmosphere killer but i do like how garrett is attired, yeh its very sinilar to splinter cell when played in 3rd person, personally they should have started a mission by showing you garrett then the camera slowly pans into his body then into 1st person, only need for 3rd person is climbing

i like both. and i'm glad they included both in the game. honestly, i don't see third as an immersion killer at all. i watch movies all the time and don't feel like i'm outside them. i still jump when things go bump and get all gooey when the heroine saves the bumbly boy and kisses him.

either way, i think the game is great fun. and how i play shouldn't matter to anyone else but me.

I played all the previous games in first person. I played Deadly Shadows on Xbox and used third person almost exlusively until I had to do things like throw a gas bomb or oil flask. I found my self trying to look around the corner of my moniter (when you do the corner lean) when I play in first person.
