Do you have AA and AF on? I have a pretty decent computer but with those on even to 2x it lags the hell out of the game. But when I turned them completely off it runs fine at 1024x768 with most details turned all the way up.

My specs:

2.5 Athlon XP
512 meg PC2700 ram
Geforce Ti4400

Try turning Bloom off. No one seemes to know what it does, but most think its a resource hog.

If you can afford a Geforce FX (any) video card, that will help make the game playable.

I'd suggest reading through this thread then:

I think there was someone with the same card you had that was able to fix some of his problems. It may be a driver issue.

Turn off your Vsync, which will help framerate. It is in the options menu.

The key thing that's slowing you down is the GF4200 video card you've got. As others have recommended, turn off bloom and VSYNC, but the 4200 was the low-end card amoung the 4200/4400/4600 lineup, which is three generations of video cards old by now.

You can play the game because you've got DirectX 8.1 and Pixel Shader 1.x (1.1? 1.3?) capabilities, but give some thought to upgrading if you want the game to play well. A mid-range Radeon 9600 or 9800 is probably the best performance for the money right now. I'm an nVidia fan myself, but the GF 5x00 series didn't impress me and I'm not sure I want to fork up the dough for a GF 6x00 yet...

It still should not perform anywhere that bad on a 4200 card. There's something else going on that is causing the problem.

I second that. I'm using the ti4200 64mb and it fairly smokes at 800x600 in T3. Also blazes along like a dream in Halo, Neverwinter Nights, and just about any other game I throw at it at 1024x768. Hardly a slow card, even considering it's 2 years old.

My GeForce FX5600 256MB card also performs sluggishly. Could it be the shadow details that bog it down? It screams in Halo and Hitman: Contracts (80fps at points) but in this game and in DX2, it lags.

I also agree. I was able to run Far Cry at 1024x768 at 40+ fps (in most areas) after some tweaks in the advanced graphic settings with my Ti 4600 card, and that is the system hog to beat them all. There's no reason for me to be struggling to get better than 20FPS at 800x600 in this game.

I have an MSI G4TI4200 128 meg DDR ram.
Vsynch off.
Bloom on (i was lagging like crap with it off and multisampling at 2)
800X600 Resolution, runs smooth as silk for me except in the clockwork tower. Havent check Fraps though yet so dont know fps. Any higher resolution lags like crap for me.
