Did you ever play any of the original Thief games? I did. Thief I, Thief II, and Thief: Gold. I loved them all. It was the first real stealth game that had one helluva great storyline to boot.
It's been a while since the last game, Thief II: The Metal Age, was released. 1998, or 1999 I think...I have the original disks here somewhere...right beside the Tombraider, Quake, and Diablo disks. ;)
With Eidos' newest game Deadly Shadows, they have brought back the stealth first person shooter and managed to improve vastly upon the original classic.
One of the best things about the game is the fact that you can change between first person and third person point of view(POV). I am particularly fond of the third person POV because it reminds me of the playing style that made Splinter Cell so popular. There is nothing more exciting than crouching down and slowly making your way to an unsuspecting victim. You can then either take out your dagger or blackjack and eliminate them. Get rid of the in a dark place to avoid another guard finding evidence of you being there.
The standard weapons are still there, but Eidos decided to get rid of the long sword that Garret carried on him. Besides, what good thief would carry around a long cumbersome sword? He's supposed to be stealthy and quiet right? So instead of the sword, he now has an easily concealable dagger that he can use.
Lighting is just as spectacular as the old game, but this new game engine allows for some great bump mapping so that the light reflects properly on the textures of rock, wood, and the ground.
Make sure you take time to listen to the conversations of the peasants and guards around you. You will pick up on some funny stuff when the guards are just standing around by themselves.
The idea is still darkness-oriented. You will want to use the dark to your advantage and avoid the guards as much as possible, but for those who enjoy taking out the guards, you can still use the dagger and blackjack to take down those that get in your way.
Personally, I sneak around and knock people unconscious everywhere I go. I prefer to render everyone in the level unconscious, or kill them if I have no other choice. I like to be able to run around at the end of the level and not have anyone left standing.
I imagine there will be some instances where killing will not be an option, and those levels are fun too. It makes it difficult to complete the level, but adds to challenge. And for those of us who play the game again completing it, you can try to complete all objectives without killing anyone at all.
Overall, this game is awesome. It has stayed true to the original in more ways than one, and at the same time the graphics are superbly improved on to keep up with all the newer games coming out.
When Splinter Cell first came out, I knew that the stealth genre had been taken to a new level. Thief:DS takes it one step further. It brings back the tense feeling from the first Thief games that got me interested in playing games that required you to sneak by the enemy instead of pumping him full of lead. It's a nice break from all the mindless first person shooters.
If you liked the original Thief games, Splinter Cell, or if you want something that isn't chock full of guns with bullets a-flyin', then give Thief: Deadly Shadows a shot.
