Raziel actually gained the ability to summon the wraith blade during the course of Soul Reaver after Kain had released it. Soul Reaver 2's intro takes place at the end of Soul Reaver. His interaction with the reaver in William's chapel during Soul Reaver 2 merely caused a temporal distortion.

but in SR1 he could not summon the reaver. He could only have it when his health was full

No. Ilfirin is right.
At williams' chapel, raziel says:
"I could now summon the blade at will, regardless of my strenght"
In Soul Reaver 1, Raziel never had the hability to summon the blade at will. He was only able to summon it when he had full strenght.
That is, my friends, an error of glyphX

I don't have SR2 yet, but in the demo (which I presume was the very beginning because I got the intro with Moebius telling Raziel to escape the Sarafan stronghold) Raziel could summon the wraithblade at will. Maybe it just dawned on him in William's chapel that he couldn't do that before.
well, that's just the demo..
i just played both of them and you could summon it at will only after William's Chapel

Oh. Well, in that case, maybe Raziel was just at full health in the movie? Yeah, he must have found one of those soul basins from Defiance and devoured it while we were looking at Kain;)

I'm not sure but I think you actually see Raziel summon the blade.

Much obliged for the reminder, everyone! For some reason I was thinking in terms of summoning at "full strength" when I initially read the first post.

You do see Raziel summon the blade. I meant he reached full health and the camera turned back to him just as it appeared. But I was joking anyway, so it doesn't really matter:) .

I think I've figured this out. It's all "God of the Machine"
GlyphX probably doesn't know the entire story, just enough to make a really neet-looking intro movie. Raziel summoning the reaver just before diving into the timestream is a great dramatic visual.
Interesting point, and I'm not sure I'm right, but in the beginning of the game, Raz can't use the wraith blade at all until he gets to william's chapel.
There's a related thread about the original SR1 opening movie. An argument about whether all that golden light is caused by the sun.
you can summon the blade, but you must be at full health to do so.
