View Full Version : I really loathe XP....
Apache

Well I finally broke down and installed XP Pro. My guts said to not do it...but I went and did it anyways.
After reinstalling all my motherboard/audio/video drivers it is getting back to normal.
My only problem now is my video capture card isn't working and I can't find drivers that are compatible to XP for it.
Any of you have and hint/tips/tricks/hammers? to fix this prob?
If not I'm just going to uninstall XP and stick with old faithful ME.
Afterall if I don't look after 'ME' who will..:D
I haven't even tried playing any of my games yet I'm afraid to.
EDIT
Anyone looking for a gently used copy of WinXP Pro?
It seems my 8 yr old vid capture card, that works great BTW, isn't liked by XP.

Plus check out VirtualDub, Apache. It may have what you're looking for. And if not, there are forums for VirtualDub that might.

8 yr old vid capture card. im surprised it worked this long. i would'nt even expect compatability beyond 3-4 years.

Have you tried this-go to whatever .exe file it is that begins the capture program-right clicking-going to the 'properties' feature and checking 'compatibility' and setting it to Win 98/95?

It is a US Robotics video capture card that is no longer supported by US Robotics. They sold all that stuff to 3Com. The video editing program is meant for 95/98..
Funny thing is it came with as a kit..PC camera and card. Camera died alittle over a year ago..card still works like a charm. I have taken this card in/out of 6 computers in the last 8 years.

I think the answer is that it is simply not DX8 compatable.

Many problems occure from upgrading a windows installation. It's best to wipe the drive clean and install the new version without the old one underneath it. Otherwise the new one inherits a lot of problems.
I don't like XP either, BTW. Viva la 2000! Or something... ;) NT stability without all the XP fruityness and excess.

My problem is that the capture card isn't supported anymore and the drivers only update to the newest version of Win98. Frankly I am surprised it worked with WinME..although ME is just a version of 98. They stop updating the drivers for this card in Aug of 1999.
Still hunting EBay for a cheap copy of Win2000 thou.

I recommend Dual-Booting (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;217210). Search the web for more detailed info if needed, and read everything twice before starting.

Try compatability mode.
I have a problem with WP pro myself. My internet connection stopped working when I uninstalled Norton System Works.
I've checked everything.
I tried to restore from everypoint back and it wont work. Arrgh.
I will have to format and reinstall but I have the upgrade version of WinXP. The Blackman showed me adownload site once that you could put software on 6 floppies so you could do a clean install. But I can't find it anymore. If anyone knows I'd love to know where.
P.S. How much you want for your XP Apache?

I run 2000, and I am sticking to it. No frutiness or flakiness for me, thank you. Regarding your capture card, if it only has 98 drivers, there is a possibility that it will never work with NT, 2000, or XP. The 95-98-ME series use fundamentally different drivers from the NT-2000-XP series. I lost two nice Aureal sound cards because of that issue. I think cross platform 98 --> 2000 may be possible, but it is not guaranteed. Of course, I would try compatibility mode to see if that works.

Why dont' you use the ATI All in wonder I sold you? I'm sure that will work fine in XP and give you capture options also. If you still have lost the installation CD.. just contact ATi and they'll send you another one.

To old..if I put that one in..it is slower than the one I have and mine doesn't even support DX:IW or the upcoming T3.

I forgot about the age factor.
I would say, don't give up on XP. I loathed my home edition alot like you until I got XP pro. I had to finally upgrade the rest of my hardware, but I'm happy with it now. It's pretty stable under NTFS, and plays thief and most all games well.
I hope you don't give it up. Join us... JOIN US NOW! :D

After a lot of work to set things up and defeat useless features, XP is almost as good as Windows 2000. It frosts me that Microsoft cannot leave well enough alone and put in some work to make an existing system more robust and easier to use. How many times do I have to set up the file system to see extensions on files? Why can't "new folder" be a context menu (right click) item? Now we have to deal with pretty new color schemes and "groups" on the task bar. Ugh. :(
Yes, XP Pro is better, but I will stick with my 2000 until I am dragged kicking and screaming to something else, hopefully way beyond XP.

Alittle off topic sorta..maybe..not sure..
I fix PC (upgrade / clean / general maintenance).
I am in the process of fixing a PC for this couple who got infected with a virus..well not one but 14. Along with that their son had installed a P2P program on the PC and that was the last straw.
This program
pccontrol.exe has installed itself 1404 times into the registry.
this caused all sorts of problems. One main one was that is was trying to run that program 1404 times using up all the memory and you couldn't even click on the Start button without it yelling at you.
After 3 days of cleaning (spy removal/virus scans/reg editing) I finally got it back to normal.

BTW, wether you have 2000 or XP you can improve performance and security some by shutting off unneccesary procceses. www.blackviper.com has a complete run down on what each proccess does, as well as what's dependent on it. I've given a couple megs worth of junk the boot with that site's help. :)

That's funny. :D New Folder IS a right click item. Just right click on desktop>New>Folder. As for the grouping in the taskbar... that's one of the first things I disable. We don't need no stinking groups. :D Right click on taskbar>Props>Uncheck groups.

However, that applies only the desktop, not within the file system using the Explorer window I imagine the only reason they put that "new...." in the desktop context menu is that the normal display of the desktop (your screen) does not have an Explorer type menu, so they were forced to to the right thing in spite of themselves.. I never create folders on the desktop. So what we have is another (almost) useless feature. Unless that is changed in XP.

Right click on ANY window or FOLDER or FILE in XP and a menu pops up with NEW as an option for creating folders. Including the Desktop. The exception, of course, an IE explorer window.

tBman is right. In XP, you can right click anywhere in Explorer and get the New Folder option. You would think that W2K has this option also.. but i wouldn't know.

I'm sorry to hear that. With the right hardware, XP runs great. Maybe when you upgrade again... you can try it again. :D
