Hello there,

Some of you -older members- may still remember me and I have a very important question regarding an incredibly annoying problem that I have.

The thing is: I recently bought a new DVD-writer and a new thingy of 420 Watt (something to make sure that my computer gets enough ventilation and electricity) and I've got more than 150 DVD's which I can play without any problem on both my somewhat older DVD-player ánd my ultranew DVD-writer.

However, one DVD doesn't seem to play right and that is the Alfred Hithcock-classic "Psycho". I already tried out 2 copies of this film on DVD and in both occassions I had the same problem arising.

The sound is ok-perfect! But there's a problem with the visual part of the DVD because at the beginning of the film (and I presume also during the entire length of this film) the image is shaking rather than showing fluently and remember: I don't have this problem with any of the other DVD's!!

So, I can't/won't see "Pyscho" with such a disturbing, shaking appearence even though the sound is alright, but could it be that I've had the ultra-bad luck to get just 2 copies which weren't alright and which were broken in some way? Or is there something sturring with my computer?

Could you please, please tell me what I should check or improve on my computer ... I shall give you all the information you need right here if you could just help me, please!!!

Thanks!!

Bye for now

I don't see how your rig can be the problem. And there is certainly no reason that "Psycho" would be unwatchable on DVD. The film is a classic, and plenty of good 35mm prints exist from which a good DVD could be made. I really think that the particular ones you have obtained must be the problem. Try to find a different source, or go back and complain.

What's the region of your Psycho DVD and what region is your DVD-drive configured to play?

I'm using PowerDVD (I don't know whether you know this program) but how can I check what region I'm using. I tried to search via options and the only suitable thing that came up was the following information:

Player Information :
Player Region Code : 2
Current Focus Drive : D:
Title Region Code : Not Available

Display Information :
Video Mode : Not Available
Display Mode : Not Available
FourCC Code : Not Available
Surface Type : Not Available

Video Attribute : Not Available

Audio Attribute : Not Available

Subpicture Attribute : Not Available

Hardware Information :
Processor: Intel
3DNow! Technology : Not Detected
Enhanced 3DNow! Technology : Not Detected
IA MMX Technology : In Use
IA Streaming SIMD Extensions : In Use
Video Accelerator : NVIDIA Hardware Video Acceleration (not in use)
Multispeakers Audio Device : Not Detected
SPDIF Output Device : Not Detected

Hope this helps! (at the time of copying this information there was NO DVD in any of the two DVD-players and thus PowerDVD was not identifying a disc, so some of the information could be somewhat different)

Thanks anyway to help me!

P.S.: Someone else told me to try and play these difficult DVD with Windows MediaPlayer and see how that one goes? Good idea or a throw-away-idea?

Thanks again, my friends!

and a new thingy of 420 Watt
Power supply?

Do you have both DVD drives in the same puter? Does the dodgy DVD still play ok in the old drive?

but how can I check what region I'm using
The region of the DVD movie itself should be printed on the case somewhere (maybe on the back).

Someone else told me to try and play these difficult DVD with Windows MediaPlayer and see how that one goes?
Yeah sure, if you can, give it a go. It will allow you to rule out one more thing that might be causing problems. There might be some kind of fluke sound encoding or video compression or something on that particular movie that that program just doesn't agree with. Anyway, it might be worth a shot.

Good luck :)

As soon as I bought a new copy of "Psycho" in the store, I'm going to try it out with Windows Media Player to check whether it works with that program. But in the mean time: the only thing that I can say is that this DVD (actually both problem-causing DVD-discs of the film "Psycho") is having problems with both my DVD-player as with my DVD-writer ... thus in order to answer your question:

Yes! Both DVD drives are on the same computer and the dodgy DVD does not play ok in the old drive.

Thanks anyhow and I'll come back if I have more information on this particular problem.
