Goto system properties (windows key and pause/break key)--> Advanced tab
Under startup and recovery clicks settings
under system startup, UNcheck Time to display list of operating systems
Under system failure:
uncheck all three boxes
under write debugging information choose non
hit ok
Under performance choose settings;
Click adjust for best performance, then go to the bottom of the list and chose "Use visual styles on windows and buttons" to retain the winxp looks
hit ok

Click the system restore tab; id only suggest running system restore on one drive (if you have more)
Click the drive you want it running on (or turn it off completely) and click settings
Id suggest using 500 MB or less for system restore
Hit OK

Click Hardware--> Device Manager

If you only have one IDE hard drive, there is no reason for the computer to be searching for a second one when it boots windows (only do this if you are SURE you know if your drive is master/slave on which channel)

Example: if I had 1 IDE HDD on the Primary IDE channel and it was master
I would the plus beside Click IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers
Right click primary IDE channel
--> Properties
-->Advanced Settings
Then I would click under Device 1; the arrow beside auto detection and set it to none. Then hit okay.
You can do this with the secondary IDE channel too.
(remember to enable them again if you install a HDD!)

A good way to decrease waste of HDD space is to set the temporary internet files disk space usage to 30 MB. You dont need anymore. IE certainly doesnt need 5 gigs on my pc. Hope this helps. If you can understand my bad english anyways

Wait until you get harassed by 50 people yelling at you because their system won't boot up.

Don't mess in your services tab, unless you know EXACTLY what you're getting into.

And my other tips? Defrag, defrag, defrag!! Clean out that hard drive like a mofo. Also make sure your pagefile is defragged too (get a program called VoptXP - best defragger out there, and really fast).

Don't, I repeat Don't always get the latest drivers for your video card. Check video card forums (like ones at rage3d.com for ATI-based cards) and see what people are saying about newly released drivers. You can also get 3rd party modified drivers for both ATI and nVidia that regularely outperform the factory-default drivers. You can also overclock your video card easily with these kinds of drivers.

Turn off v-sync on your video card. Trust me. Unless you have a 1-month-old $5,000 machine.

Ram. More ram = better. Get lots. Lots and lots. Oodles.

Finally, there's no substitute for a good upgrade.

What he should have said was
Under the services tab first hit
Hide all Microsoft services

Then uncheck anything you think fit

Then click on the startup tab and remove all the garbage there especially if you see a blank line - its either a virus or a spyware program.

I would not go so far as to say tons of RAM. Most games won;t even use it. If you go over 1G of ram your wasting money. Unless you are doing high end graphics or CAD type work or hard core movie editing. You will not need more than a Gig in todays PC Gaming world. And to be honest. 1 Gig is a little more than really needed. I would say that 768 would be about right. 1 Gig would ensure it for much longer. 512M is absolute minimum. Not more than 1 Gig.

I challenge anyone to prove that you need more than 1 Gig of RAM for a gaming rig. Actual Truth? You don't.

Although, HL2, Doom 3, Stalker, PainKiller, FarCry may prove me wrong. I doubt it though. Not from what I have seen so far anyway.
