Hi all,

First of all, the game was running alright without the patch. I didn't even know a patch was out, and was merrily working my way through. Noticing some annoying lag sometimes, I checked to see if there was a patch, and there was. So I installed it.

Now I can't play.

I tried to load my saves and it goes to a black screen for a bit. Then the Deus Ex cursor changes to a spinning CD (like it is checking the drive). After a while (couple of minutes) it crashes to the desktop.

I noticed in the FAQ that it is reccomended that you change the resoultion to your saved game before loading. I thought I'd try it out.

Well, same thing happened except this time I got an error message in addition. It says "Conflict with disc emulator software detected. See www.securerom.com/emulation for more details."

Um... wtf? I don't run an emulator of any kind. This is a brand new computer I just put together yesterday, with a fresh install. The only thing I have on there is Deus Ex 2, Call of Duty, Microsoft Office, Winamp 5, and Nero Express.

Literally, that's it.

What is the deal here? I want to play the game. It was working before the patch... :(

All help greatly appreciated :)

Umm, the best I can say, is that it might have something to do with Nero, but that's only because some CD burning software contains drive emulating software to use as a buffer when they build an image file (CloneCD is famous for this, and I think later versions of Nero do something similar, as it allows for making true 1:1 copies without having two CD drives, or creating a permanent image backup).

Here's the real pain of it all: You can no longer crack games that you *legally* own, due to the DMCA and some laws about breaking copy-protection schemes (Digital Rights Management 0wnz j00).

You can break encryption legally, but not copy protection, so you're boned.

My advice: uninstall and reinstall without the patch. Then send a nasty letter to Eidos for their (useless) attempts as inconveniencing a rather small minority.

SecureROM is notorious for causing these problems. Besides that fact, it's not even *good* copy protection, and is *easily* broken by anybody with a mind to do it.

Hooray for the customer!

I'm going to try the uninstall-reinstall in a bit (I was trying other alternatives).

I tried disableing my CDRW drive.

I tried uninstalling Nero.

Neither worked. (Shouldn't have to do this anyway as a program shouln't be able to dictate what I have on my computer  )

This is complete BS. I've had problems with secure rom before. I couldn't run Never Winter Nights for like 6 months till they finally got rid of secure rom with a patch (this was on my old computer).

In case this helps, here is my computer:

AMD Athlon 64 3400+
ASUS K8V Delux
ASUS ATI Radeon 9800XT 256mb
Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS
1GB Corsair RAM

::sound of jaw hitting floor::

NICE RIG!

Anyway, I'm with you on that. Heck, I'm *amazed* that it runs on my system, considering all of the strange things I have installed.

Oh! One quick question:

What applications are running when you CTRL-ALT-DEL? I'm assuming you have WinXP... You should also check the processes that are running, and kill all of the unnecessary ones, because ONE of them might be causing your problem.
